We’re a young couple in our mid-20s, married for just under two years.
In the early stages of our relationship, we weren’t actively going to church due to work schedules. Eventually, we started attending a church we both liked occasionally. However, a few months later, my wife began attending a different church on her own. It’s an ethnic church, and the pastor is from our home country.
This new church was established after the pastor left his previous church of over 10 years to start his own. The old church was a well-structured organization with branches around the world, while the new one is more of a one-man ministry. We occasionally attended the old church—maybe on New Year’s Eve—but we weren’t members.
The transition to the new church was interesting. The pastor announced he was moving on, and within days, members of the congregation started posting information about a new church with the same logo, just a different name. By the next Sunday, the new church was fully operational, with nearly everyone from the old church attending.
The old church is still running, but it’s almost empty. Most of the members and those serving in ministry moved to the new church, to the point where the old church doesn’t even livestream services anymore.
Here’s the issue: I’m a very principled person, and without knowing the reasons behind such a drastic move, I can’t bring myself to start attending this new church. While I know I’m not entitled to an explanation, understanding the context would help me make a judgment. My wife, however, thinks I hate the pastor simply because I’ve refused to attend the new church.
I understand that people develop emotional connections with their pastors, and that likely played a role in her decision to move. But I don’t have that same connection since he wasn’t my pastor to begin with.
This disagreement has caused a huge argument, and it even got extended family involved. Most of them seemed to agree with me, saying it doesn’t make sense to blindly follow a pastor to a new church without context. They advised us to find a neutral church we both like.
Now, here’s why this is all coming to a head: My wife and I had a quiet courthouse wedding to address immigration-related issues, but now she wants a “church wedding.” She’s insistent that it be held at this new church, with the pastor also doing our marriage counseling—despite the advice from extended family to look for a neutral church we can both agree on.
I’m not sure how to handle this, especially since we both used to enjoy going to the previous church together before she started attending this new one. What was supposed to be a one-off service for her turned into a full commitment—she’s now actively serving there.
Looking for advice on how to navigate this.
