2024.11.25 04:33 luck-of-the-draw All of my friends are married/engaged...I'm 21

I don't know what's in the air, but I am only 21 and every single one of my friends are married, engaged, or soon to be engaged. Some of these couples have been dating for less than a year and already planning a wedding in the summer. I'm not bothered by this because at least some of the couples have been going strong since high school, but there is a large majority of couples that have been dating since last March. I was expecting this to happen, but not at 21. I don't even have enough money to fly out to all of these weddings so I have to couch surf and drive from state to state. Some of the couples quite literally can't have an open bar because they are going to be under age.
Also I don't have a small group of friends either. There are approximately 9-12 engagements / weddings amongst couples. I don't feel as if I'm being left out but at the same time it seems like I'm witnessing an early death of so many of my friends social lives. (This isn't to say things will change between me and my friends, hopefully).
This is bringing into question my own relationships and my romantic life. I've had a string of long term partners. Dating here and there, but am I crazy for thinking that this is an oddity? And most of these couples are first time relationship havers. I can't believe that all of these people hit a home run on the first person they met in college.
This is just unsettling for me at such a young age. I think I might have to make new friends who are single.

I’m honestly a bit of a romantic. Not necessarily just an “I want a boyfriend” kind of person, but an “I am seeking my soulmate” kind of person. I was thinking yesterday about a guy who I crushed on for a bit in high school. He was handsome, and was kind to me when I ran track with him in ninth grade. I admit that yesterday, I searched him up out of the blue. I haven’t spoken to him in years, and wanted to know what happened to him. He has another girlfriend now. I admit that, though I know it wasn’t right, I judged her somewhat for being overweight. I wasn’t having a rational reaction. I didn’t cry about it or anything, would have been absurd to, but I did think about how, especially with him being three years older than me, it just wasn’t meant to be. We couldn’t have dated when I was in high school, it wouldn’t have been legal. Everything happens for a reason. I’d like to think that I didn’t date this guy because it just wasn’t meant to be. I also know that it was odd for me to think of him so randomly yesterday. What’s odd is that I didn’t start liking him until quarantine. I didn’t really even realize that he was quite handsome, like properly good looking, until the pandemic started and our time on the track team was over. I didn’t develop a thing for him until we were no longer seeing each other every day. Strange how that works. Strange that I even thought of him.
I’d be a liar if I said that I don’t want to date. I do. I think that, even all these years later, I’m still insecure about my appearance due to bullying in school. I want to marry. I suppose that, though I don’t focus all of my attention on it, what I really hate is to think that so many other women, in my mind, receive attention from men - have more opportunities than I do to meet a prospective husband. It bothers me just a little bit. I spend most of my time nowadays working and studying for my exam, though (I need to take an exam for my job to receive a $2/hr raise. I try and study a little bit for it every day. I’ve taken multiple practice exams. I am intent on passing.)
I’ve been in community college since late 2023, still no idea as to what I want to major in. I hope that continuing to work will help me figure it out. I’m frugal, and have $21k saved.
I really enjoy working with children. I’ve worked with children in some capacity for over a year now. I don’t know whether or not I actually want to become a mother, though. I know that it’s a big responsibility, having a child. Honestly, even working with children is a big responsibility. I’ve been told that I’m good at reading to children.
I have this thing going on, though I’m not sure that it’s strange, wherein like, I don’t really trust most people. It’s not that I think everyone is terrible and inhumane or something. It’s just that I feel - understand - that you never know anyone as well as you think you do, that you never actually know what someone else may do. The fact that Trump won the election, for example, made me feel as though I am right to be reasonably tuned into other people’s body language. I knew after he won the election that a lot of people who said they’d vote for Harris were lying. In a society wherein most people were moral, I simply don’t think Trump could have won. People didn’t want to vote for a woman of color. It’s just one of those really disgusting, eye opening situations that made me feel validated for believing that most people aren’t “good” (yet aren’t bad,) and for trying my best to not put too much stock into what others think of me. Most people aren’t particularly smart nor particularly kind. This doesn’t mean that there aren’t plenty of great people out there, because there are. But I also think that it’s very easy to fall into groupthink and that most people lack critical thinking skills. I have been depressed lately, though I’ve been working anyway, because I am honestly worried about the direction our society is heading in.
I have seasonal depression, kinda. I’m actually able to cope with it without medication. I’ve never taken medication to cope with it, even though all of my immediate family members are mentally unwell (my older sibling, who is in rehab, is on medication. I’m very happy for him as he seems to be healing. He is working now and seems to be getting things together.
