I just did an interview for a University job and they were very keen to get me to move to Harbin. I understand it's cold cold cold and not a popular spot, but the opportunity to make extra money is tempting and my adventurous spirit is intrigued by the thought.
When I looked at the air pollution levels it seems to go from good to mostly fine then suddenly HAZARDOUS levels of pollution for a few days then back down again.
In my current South East Asian city, most of the pollution is from transport so there's not much variation in the air quality index. It's almost always around 70-120 AQI. Today Harbin went from 40 to 320! I can't imagine what that's like...
Why is this? Can I expect all of winter to be awful smog or is it just a temporary thing?

Hi there this is Adam, thank you in advance for taking the time to read and respond to my message, I have an upcoming fight with a friend of mine, and basically I need some advice on how to properly handle him, He, lets call him Chris, is a very great wrestlerm college d1 level, considerably a body builder with very big strentgh and has around 3 months of bjj training, However He is a very good wrestlers which adds a lot to his game, I have been training for almost a year and half, about 9 months consistently and I am not confident in my ability to seal the deal. I am 6 foot and around 200 pounds and he is 5 foot 6 inches around 160 pounds, however he is a freak of nature, are able to bench 315lbs as a 160 pound guy, so not your avarage 5 foot 6 guy. I have ideas as to what should be my game plan but I would love some advice on what i can do against him, (What should be my primary focus, primary go-to submissions and other options,) Thank you :)

I was having a discussion with a resident where I work and we were talking about consumersim's push for individualism in ways that hinder critical social connection. Some examples we discussed were;
Sharing a communal commodities - House Phone - Record Player - Televisions - Gaming system
There was a time families and friends gathered together to share in the use of these goods. They had to learn how to navigate conflicts such as time of use, selecting programs to view or listen to, and adjusting to taking turns on things like gaming systems. Even with goods before those, families gathered around a central radio to listen to shows, games, and news.
In contrast, today every room has to have a TV maybe even a separate router. Netflix is cracking down on account sharing and so on. Consumersim seems to be moving us away from cooperative economics governed by cultural norms and into instantaneous gratification that's almost void of human contact and any sort of social friction. Where does this road lead?

I have a 2021 Legion 5 Pro, it has 1 PCIe 4.0 slot and another PCIe 3.0 slot. However, the SSD that came pre-equipped with it is a 512GB samsung PCIe 3.0
I bought a 1TB WD Blue SN850 to increase the storage. It is a PCIe 4.0 drive. But the free slot right now in my laptop is the PCIe 3.0 one with the other faster one being occupied by the samsung gen 3 drive. Would switching the drives to take advantage of Gen 4 speeds be more of a hassle than it is worth? How do you even go around that, i haven't found a simmilar case online.
Correct me if im wrong, but in order to do that i have to insert the new drive into the 3.0 slot, clone the other drive, then open up the laptop again and switch them?, would that work?

2024.11.25 06:30 criticality500 For not wanting to use all my annual leave looking after my mother in law after a minor op?
MIL (75) is fit and well, and has a lovely life as a wealthy retiree in a village 5 hours from where we live. She is due cataract surgery soon, which she is having on each eye separately, so two operations.
I understand that any op is scary and am totally fine with taking a couple of days off to accompany her to the hospital and settle her in back home after (day 1) and then batch cook some food so she has some freezer meals available (day 2). I've read up on the modern surgery and it's now a very minor procedure. You don't even have to worry about bending over any more!
However, she is insisting we should be around for 7-10 days after each op. I don't think this is necessary and it would use up almost all my annual leave. Meanwhile, my own mother is actually sick (dementia) and my dad is in actual need of real help. I simply cannot afford to spend that much time on someone who doesn't really need any help when I have other relatives who need me so much more.
I'm also cautious about this because MIL has form for being a bully. She invited me to a party as a guest and when I arrived told me I would be serving drinks for the evening. She treated me like a servant, barked orders at me and screamed at me for not going fast enough. I think being a patient may offer an opportunity for similar "lady of the manor" type behaviour. I find her so difficult to be around her constant bullying that I go to a really dark place after 3 or 4 days in her company.
My husband is acting like I'm a hypocrite for saying it is unnecessary for us to be there for a week. He says I needed a week of care last year and he took time off work. But this isn't true - he wasnt on leave! He worked from home. And the surgery wasn't cataracts, I had an organ removed and was told to take 4 months off work.
When I had my wisdom teeth out, which is a more comparable thing, he flew to China and I dealt with dry socket by myself. (It was fine, I'm pretty independent so this wasn't an issue for me).
AITA for saying no? If the op was a major thing, I would absolutely be there. But cataract surgery is so minor, it surely doesn't require all of our annual leave?! Especially when my mum needs me more.
