2024.11.25 07:50 Interesting-Desk8045 Random encounter suggestions
Hi, I am running a long term campaign that is (mostly) an open world. I'm the type of dm where I make a large world, each with named locations, POIs in each location, and simple one pager notes for each poi listing atmosphere, owner name and race, basic side quest outlines, and then just riff off of what the players do.
Lately I have been struggling to keep random encounters interesting, pretty much devolving to bandits, wolves, lost traveller's, etc.
I made a folder where I can start putting random encounters, and hope that you guys could give some ideas that aren't too cliché and will give the players a little thought on how to proceed with the encounters.
Setting is high fantasy, any help appreciated.

It seems that some people in here assume this is referring to Tabitha and the hole, because MIY goes in to talk about the hole AFTER the knowledge line, but right BEFORR he says this, he says “that Jade sure can play. This didn’t have to happen you know.” I don’t think this “knowledge comes with a cost” has anything to do with Tabitha and the hole under the house. I think MIY means that the song brought them knowledge but it also freed him. Like “okay, you learned something new (the children, the resurrection cycle, etc) but at the cost of waking me.” Seemed obvious to me, but just thought I’d post my thoughts since I’ve seen the discussion tend to go towards the hole under the house with regard to that line.
