This study seeks to understand some of the things that may link cisheterosexist experiences and mental health in LGBTQ+ young people. It invites you to complete 3 short surveys - one when you are ready, another two weeks later, and another two weeks after that.
We would really value your participation :)
Participants must be:

LGBTQ+ (inc. questioning/unsure)
16-25 years old
based in the UK

2024.11.25 15:21 Hairy_Usual_4460 Need help drafting what to say to mildlynomil after she consistently calls my daughter by the name of her daughter (my fiancés sisters name)

So as the title says, my MIL is really annoying in a lot of ways but overall I have a decent relationship with her. She is always very nice to me and treats me as family so I do appreciate that. She has done some things here and there in the past that we have dealt with and the only issue that remains is that she has never once called my baby by her legal name that we gave her and instead insists on calling and comparing her to my SO’s sister. For the sake of anonymity I will be calling his sister Natalie in this post. There’s a lot of reasons why this annoys the living crap out of me and I’ll list some: - our baby is ours, not Natalie’s baby. Natalie has no children and honestly never will. She’s a very strange woman who does not have boyfriends (she is straight though) and the first question she asked when we were at Thanksgiving last year was why we didn’t get an abortion.. just really odd - his sister irks me because she is very odd and annoying and has never once met our almost 10 month old girl and has never shown any interest at all - never sent anything off the baby registry for our shower or just literally anything at all for our girl. (Which I don’t need gifts for her but it’s more about the fact that she has never had anything to do with this baby that makes it particularly annoying that mil insists on calling her this girls name). - every single time mil sees baby, it’s immediately “Natalie! Oh you are just like Natalie” “you will be a stinker just like Natalie!” “You will walk at 9 months just like Natalie!” And so on, you get it. - she has never once called our baby by her name. That’s just disrespectful in my opinion. I know she doesn’t like the name we chose and I honestly do not care at all if she doesn’t like it, that’s fine she doesn’t have to like it but she does have to respect the choice and call her by it. - lastly, SO and his sister did not fuck and make this baby, we did.. so tbh her calling our daughter by Natalie’s name and constantly saying she is going to do this or that just like Natalie is so strange and inappropriate and honestly takes away from the fact that I am her mother not Natalie.
So I’ve had just about enough from her with this and I can’t just stay silent any longer with it. I talked to SO about it and told him that times up he needs to deal with it because it’s not stopping. He agreed and also does not like it. He said he’s going to talk to her about it when she comes today after work. I’m trying to find the right way we should approach it without causing drama or making her feel attacked. This is what I have drafted (I will not be speaking to her about it, SO will be talking with her but I would like to come up with the best way he can say it because he is not a wordsmith and will probably make whatever he says very short and I want her to understand why this is unacceptable.) so this is what I’ve come up with. I am in need of any and all advice with this situation and what we should say
“if you would stop calling River by the name of ****** and saying she is going to be just like her we would really appreciate that. We want her to be called by the name we gave her, **. The calling her *** and comparing her to ******* is a little odd because she is mine and ****** daughter, not ****** daughter so if she takes after anyone it will be ***** and I, not ***. Thanks and I’m sure you understand how this could be inappropriate/ weird/or off putting for *** and I.”
Oh and also just for context to the situation we don’t have really much of a relationship with sister. We don’t see her or speak to her (I have only seen and spoke to her once). Fiancé doesn’t speak to her on the phone at all or anything like that and she lives out of state. There’s really no relationship there which tbh I am grateful for

I'm sick of seeing posts where people are outraged because they are being encouraged to pay for a subscription. First question I see a lot of the time is "Why is Duo trying to generate more money?" The most common answer to that is "Corporate greed" but the actual answer is because they need to make money full stop. The app has only just started to generate a profit every year. You can see Duo's finances online and if you look at net income over time, you can see that: In 2019 they lost $13.55 million, in 2020 they lost $15.78 million, in 2021 they lost $60.14 million, in 2022, they lost $59.57 million, in 2023 they made $16.07 million and this year they are predicted to make $86.78 million. So, if the predictions come true, by the end of 2024, they will have lost a total of $46.19 million since the start of 2019. Second question I see is "But I watched so many ads, surely that's enough funding for them?" I mean as you've seen, no. But let's dig deeper. All revenue outside of subscriptions in the last quarter was about $35 million in total, operating costs (i worked this out by subtracting EBITDA from total revenue) was about $145 million. So if you were to try funding purely on ads alone you're running a loss of about $110 million every 3 months. Also if you compare ad revenue to revenue from subscriptions which was $157,677,000. You can see ad revenue is a drop in the bucket. Third question I see is "Isn't Duo supposed to be making language learning free for all?" Yes and it still does that. Despite it being more annoying to earn back hearts (It's not impossible because you can still practice to earn hearts when you reach 0), you can still complete all the lessons for free. People were saying "Why not give more content to subscribers to incentivise paying?" In my mind, that goes against the idea of free language learning for all more than having to wait to earn hearts past the first one does. As well as this, in a recent AMA, an employee at Duolingo said that they were wanting to get more subscribers in globally wealthy areas so that it can fund free users in globally less wealthy regions, so in essence they are thinking about making language learning more accessible on a global level rather than making it cheap for hobbyists in a region which is, in a global sense, well off. All in all, yes the free experience being less enjoyable is annoying, as is feeling pressured into paying for the service. But the situation is a lot more complex than "Big corporation bad".

I have a DeWalt 734 planer and it works okay, but I recently planted the head off of a screw which destroyed the knife blades. I did not use it much for years but have been using it more to do my layered bowls/jars. Do I replace the knife blades, do I upgrade to a helical head or do I buy a whole new planer ($500 budget)?

I got Fortnite from a friend and verified it then I tried to launch it the easy anti-cheat worked and started loading and then said initializing and then said waiting for the game and making my PC freeze I tried a couple of solutions like installing direct x12 and x also checked my drivers which is also my processor ( and ryzen 5 5600g) and then I tried accessing firewall to the folder name (FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping_EAC_EOS and, FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping) but then also nothing happens until I tried in compatibility mode to make the folder FortniteClient-Win64-Shipping_EAC_EOS run as administrator it doesn't load the anti-cheat or say to me initializing doesn't launch the game I tried to launch it further om epic launcher and it always says running for a sec and then says launch ( again and AGAIN ) but if I remove the administrator from the folder the first problem which freezes my PC comes back so what should I do?
