2024.11.26 01:00 babababooieee Thoughts on recent M.S. grad going into plant operations (temporarily)?
Hi all, looking for some potential advice here from those in the industry. I'm a recent grad with a B.S. and M.S. in Chemical Engineering. I graduated with both of these simultaneously, so while I have done a process engineering internship I don't have any real experience yet. With the job market the way it is for recent grads finding an engineering job is difficult, but an interesting opportunity came across my path.
I was reached out to via LinkedIn by a plant manager from a local plant that is doing waste -> energy through a biochemical process. They invited me straight to an interview and tour of the plant, and the messaging stated multiple times that there's potential for growth/advancement. But, this position would be as a plant operator rather than as an engineer.
This seems like an exciting opportunity, especially given the barrier that experience is posing right now for myself and other new grads. However, I don't want to risk curtailing my future career in which I want to be a full-fledged engineer, and I'm not sure if this would do that or not. I think the hands-on process experience would be helpful for a new grad where everything is still pretty theoretical, and maybe give me some time to study for EIT/FE exam while college content is still fresh in my mind if I choose to do that. But I really just don't know.
Mostly just looking for thoughts and advice here from real-world engineers, and what something like this could mean for my career moving forward. This is far from set in stone of course, haven't visited yet and don't have an offer in hand (just got the message this afternoon) but would love some advice before approaching this. Should I pursue this, or wait for an opportunity to go straight into an engineering role?
TL;DR: recent grad with ChemE masters degree--do I pursue opportunity as plant operator and look for rapid advancement to engineer, or pass and wait for full-fledged engineering opportunity?

2024.11.26 01:00 TheTurtleVirus DiY Knife Display System (in progress)
 | I have approximately 30 knives in my collection sitting in a Spyderco hanging display roll in my closet. I hate that they are tucked away and not on display. I'm not super happy with what's available on the market so I'm working on making my own display. I have made a couple standalone displays before that have turned out pretty good but I want a system that can expand with my collection and accommodate collections that have dozens of knives or more. My first prototype seems to work very well. It relies on heavy-duty but cheap and widely available parts for the most part. The base is a common aluminum DIN rail. You can get these in various lengths or cut them to fit your needs. They are very strong and low profile. They can be screwed onto any shelf and they usually come in raw Al color or black. 20x12" pieces is $16 on Amazon Next is the rail clamp. I used some low profile aluminum clamps also found on Amazon at 10 for $15. Honestly these may be too strong. You can easily snap these onto a DIN rail but removing them can be a struggle. Maybe I'll design a 3D printable tool to help remove them, IDK. Next are the magnets. In a previous project I used tiny bar magnets and that turned out to be a mistake so I went super beefy for this prototype. I used 70lb bar magnets that screw into the mount. I got 8 for $16 on Amazon but it looks like if you buy more you can get them for even cheaper. These feel like a good strength to me. My biggest/heaviest knives (AD10 and MSI) have no problem connecting to the magnet with zero slip. It takes a deliberate force to remove them but it's not too difficult. Then we have the rubber. I got a 15' roll of adhesive rubber strip 1/32" thick and 1" wide for $10 on Amazon. This rubber pad is actually really important to keeping the knife locked onto the mount. I stuck directly onto the magnet and cut off the excess. It looks a little sloppy, for a final product I would spend more time cutting it nicely. Last is the 3D-printable mount. I used basic PLA, it probably cost <$1 in plastic/electricity for a single piece. This likely isn't a design I will use but it was a good prototype. I used long half inch screws to connect to the clamp because I could see this being the weakest point in the whole design and it feels adequate. For the final design I think I will offset the magnets to the left a little bit, maybe even mirror it If I want to display the clip side of a knife. I think I will make mounts that holds 1, 2, 3, and maybe even 4 knives vertically. Anyways, I just wanted to chronicle my progress. I plan on mounting these to some floating wood shelves in my bedroom. What are your thoughts? I would love feedback or ideas. last time i was on the amtrak i took a 5pm train to sj and it broke down at the davis station and everyone had to wait for them to bring a replacement train. and then later it stopped for like 40 mins bc there was another car blocking the tracks. after we started again, it stopped ANOTHER TIME and the conductors refused to tell us what was going on. turns out they thought they hit someone on the tracks 😭😭 and they called the police and emt to investigate. thankfully the train didn’t hit anyone but we were stopped for over 2 hours bc of it. i finally got home at 12 AM. what was supposed to be a 2 hour train ride took 7 hours on the amtrak. im traumatized from the amtrak but im taking it again tmrw after the longest time to go home for the break so wish me luck💀 anyone got any better options? bc im done with using the amtrak

Recentemente fiquei solteiro novamente, aí voltei aos apps pra tentar achar uma boa conexão com outra humana. Estou usando os dois que deram mais certo da última vez e estou limitando meu esforço somente a eles (Facebook Dating e OkCupid, pra quem estiver curioso), e me vi inserido em um limbo que descrevo da seguinte forma:
- De um lado, gente que só viaja o tempo todo, todas as fotos são de lugares do mundo onde a pessoa foi, gente que parece que vive o dia inteiro na academia só postando foto com o corpo exposto, e combinando esses dois perfis, tem o perfil master da pessoa que está lá com o fim de achar alguém pra levá-la embora do Brasil.
- Do outro, gente que parece que está nos apps contra a própria vontade, com enormes listas de requisitos excludentes (que podem incluir ou não preferências políticas), gente que pensa que zodíaco pode determinar o sucesso ou fracasso de uma relação, e gente que nem faz questão de disfarçar o próprio fanatismo religioso.
- Tem outros perfis macro, como aqueles onde a pessoa não posta uma foto sequer, não escreve nada na descrição, e não coloca nada que poderia ajudar a dizer que pretensões ela tem no app, mas esse tipo é menos frequente.
Mais alguém sentiu ou sente dificuldades parecidas usando esses apps?
