2024.11.26 06:30 Wild-Breath7705 How extreme was Japan’s military historically?

Japan has a mythos around it. Samurai exhibiting extreme honor. Fanatical devotion by soldiers in WWII leading to suicide charges and kamikaze pilots. The attempts to behead enemies for honor leading to stories like the mound of noses from the invasion of Korea.
These days there’s a (I suspect accurate) view in popular history that most cultures arent that foreign and that what seems extreme to a modern reader is logical when you understand the historical context better. Plenty of the things we find extreme about Japan have some kind of more familiar equivalent (in most countries, we venerate last stands and death with honor for example). However, there seem to be historical events and traditions that are hard to imagine in our culture and seem roughly historically accurate (the forty-seven ronin, the ritualistic nature of seppuku). I know Imperial Japanese propaganda retold a lot of these stories in very extreme forms to emphasize the superiority of Japanese culture, but it doesn’t seem like it’s false that the forty-seven ronin existed (and that their actions were genuinely unusual) or that seppuku was an unusual form of suicide(although a defeated leader committing suicide isnt unusual, the ritual is surprising to me).
My question is how extreme was Japan’s military culture (and if convenient to touch on, Japanese culture in general)? Was it actually an outlier? What degree did Japanese military culture retained a lineage through the political and upheavals and how much of this is entirely an invention of the period of imperial Japan?

2024.11.26 06:30 Kite_Wing129 Does Spider-Man Have Any Villains Similar To Technical Boy?

For those who aren't familiar, Technical Boy is a character from Gaiman's American Gods series who are part of the 'modern day Gods' with Technical Boy representing technology and tech bros who benefit from it. He is basically a 4Chan troll or a Redditor with super powers.
Here is his intro scene in the show.
The closest I can think of is Flash Thompson in Holland's Spider-Man trilogy. He was nerd like Peter but a complete jerk to him (which is what lead me down this train of thought). What if Peter had a friend who was a nerd but their friendship falls apart because the latter was complete scum? In a different continuity I can see a character like Allaister Smythe fitting that bill.

2024.11.26 06:30 A-Dubs398 Is Sonic The Hedgehog 3 gunna be a Christmas movie? Should it be a Christmas movie?

The end of the trailer makes it look like the movie is gunna take place around Christmas season. This could potentially be the greatest Christmas movie of all time since Die Hard. GASP!
Do you think Sonic 3 should be a Christmas movie?

2024.11.26 06:30 4920H38 STALKER 1: SOC - Where should I go after saving Mole?

Hello Stalkers, I must say Im enjoying STALKER Shadow of Chernobyl. I saved Mole at the Ahroprom Research Institute. Im not stuck but I have some gameplay preferences when playing.

  1. Collecting achievements along the way
  2. Not being scared shitless
Should I go down to the sewebasement after saving Mole against the Merc suit fellas? I unlocked the Save Bis achievement and that one felt like it was a sidequest. Have I missed any side quest achievements or should I continue the story down the hatch?

2024.11.26 06:30 Mediocre-medicine445 What’s your theory on the backstory to the “moving houses” game? (Spoilers)

I played this just recently and was very confused on everything but I think I’ve come to some sort of understanding of the background.
It starts off with a family of three (possibly five because of a picture in the hallways towards the end of the game) and the wife gets pregnant with a baby, they pre decorate a room with a crib and baby toys and all that a infant needs then during childbirth the wife and baby dies, I think this makes the most sense since we see the character (you) wander through a hospital with blood stains everywhere. Then the husband goes into a deep depressive state and gets some mental disorder (seeing all those ghosts and Getty images and videos throughout the game).
He goes crazy over the loss of his wife and newborn and wants to block out those emotions and memories by methods such as the happy song in the credits talking about moving on and moving houses and also completely forgetting an entire floor of the house and the attic (where his wife’s ashes remain).
He gets ready to move which is where the game starts and as it goes on he realizes he can’t escape this terrible memory and everything becomes darker from there with repeating hallways and hallucinations of floating furniture and ghost figures.
I haven’t figured out the whole office in the e basement part yet maybe he quit his job or got fired.
Anyways in the cut level from the game there’s a maze of constant shelves trapping you in and eventually you run into a poster saying “you can’t leave” I think that’s part of that whole he wants to escape but he can’t he’s trapped in the house and has to face his trauma but he refuses to and it’s unhealthy.
Again in the end of the game after the happy song about finally moving on it quiets down and after seeing plenty of ghosts on the drive away he ends up back in his old house with a “sold” sign in the front yard instead of the original “for sale” sign we see in the beginning. He’s back and he can’t move on.
There’s some unexplained stuff in the game that I can’t entirely figure out myself but this is pretty much what I think the story is about for anyone that’s confused.

2024.11.26 06:30 Dismal-Quantity-2013 I did this and fell in love with hard work.

The answer to procrastination isn't discipline.
Its love.
Like I said in one of my previous posts.
Fear makes you shrink.
Love makes you expand.
Procrastination is your body wanting to shrink.
Hard work and mastery is the opposite.
What you want to do is increase the love in yourself.
Love the world more. Love yourself more. Accept your feelings more. Accept others more.
Stop judging yourself.
Stop judging others.
If you are procrastinating then find a way to fall in love with it.
Instead of trying to push it away.
Love your procrastination.
Love your bad habits.
Love your so called bad emotions.
That's all you need to know.
