 | Dear fellow blaster-ers! I thought I'd be able to fix this but I thought wrongly 😅 The mag prime switch on the gearbox box had broken off, and while I had a quick fix by sticking on something to the hole where the plastic button was, it gave way after a few racking of the charging handle. Was wondering if anyone here has some experiencing with soldering or fixing this? I can probably try to buy a switch from some electronic shop but I don't have the tools for it. Help? PS: An extension from the charging handle on the upper receiver presses on this switch when it is racked, hence activating the mag prime. I've been hearing people cry how this generation is the worst and that gaming was so much better in the old days. The same way people were declaring this during the seventh and eighth generations (yes, people were). I'm not going to pretend that this generation is perfect by any means, but I do want to tackle some of the criticisms that get thrown in the direction of the PS5 generation.
- The generation had a slow first year: I don't know how anyone who was around for the start of the PS4 generation can accuse the PS5 generation of being slower than that with a straight face. The PS5 launch in 2020 gave us Demons Souls Remake, Astro's Playroom, Sackboy and Miles Morales. 2021 gave us Returnal and Ratchet & Clank Rift Apart. That's merely speaking of the first party games. What did the PS4 generation give us in comparison. It launched with Knack and the worst Killzone game since the first one on PS2. 2014 gave us Infamous Second Son and Littlebigplanet 3; good games to be sure, but you can't say that they make the year objectively better than the PS5's 2021. The PS3 wasn't too much better if we're being honest. Resistance 1 was alright for a launch title, Ratchet & Clank Tools of Destruction was great, but Uncharted 1 always felt like a game that didn't live up to its potential yet (that would come for Uncharted 2)
- Losing Japan Studio robbed us of loads of creative, quirky games: I'm sorry but this hasn't really been true for consoles since the PS2. The PS3 had two well regarded Japan studio developed games (Tokyo Jungle and Puppeteer). Outside of Astro Bot, they only made one well regarded game (Gravity Rush 2). For as much as people praise Japan Studio for developing all these smaller titles, the studio itself was a massive conglomerate that was larger than both Naughty Dog and Insomniac. The games they were developing just weren't selling well enough to support the studio. If VGChartz are to be believed, Gravity Rush 1 on the Vita outsold all the Siren games combined. And considering this studio also gave us Knack 1 and 2, there's no guarantee that any possible PS5 game they would've made would've turned out good either.
- Too many games are crossplatform: For those of you who have this complaint, I have a question. What exactly do you want out of a game that is made only for PS5. I ask this because I've also seen a load of people complain whenever a game nowadays includes a 60fps mode. If a game for PS5 is made with 60fps in mind, is it really that unbelievable nowadays that they are able to optimize it for PS4?
- Games used to be more creative in the past: I think this mindset is based on retrospection long after previous generations ended. I'm often astounded whenever people claim that the PS3 era was a bastion of creativity, because it sure didn't feel like that at the time where every new game was a murky brown and grey military shooter. When the PS5 era is all finished, I'm sure many lower budget creative games will be more well known and talked about (Neon White is currently my favourite PS5 game).

Qualifications: I have a Master's in Classics and Ancient History (with modules focused on research and literature) along with two years of Greek and Latin. And my undergrad was in English Literature.
I've checked on the UGC website and there's no subjects similar to Classics/Greco-Roman Literature. But since, we can appear for substitutes, I would like to know what all subjects I can appear for? What's the closest one to ancient greek language & literature? And what's the most sought after (bc of placements/pay/scope/research/network etc)?
Also I've learned we can give this twice a year...which interesting if we can give it in different subjects, so could I just try another one if I don't make it in the first one?
I was thinking Folk Literature, Comparative Literature, or Linguistics. What do you suggest?
- Second thing: I miss classics, I miss it terribly. And one could argue I miss academia and don't want to face the real world but that's not it. I have been in corporate last four years and it's paid the bills. I'm really grateful and proud of it all. However, none of it feels meaningful or 'right' or purposeful. Urgent sure, but not important. With Classics, though, the world was just brighter - if you know what I mean. I was buzzing with passion and ambition and the need to do well, to be better, to contribute to research despite the failures. I have had enough time to think and work on things, and I do. I am sincere with my work and I find silly things to enjoy at work but it's all just bleh.
Anyway, my sister has been suggesting UGC NET for well over two years now but I am not familiar with Indian Academia enough so it does seem like I'm walking into the unknown. I will obviously do more research but in the meantime, do you think it's a better career than corporate? What's the networking and scope like? What are some perks one would have as an assistant professor?
