I'm so tired of the anti intellectualism (I'm based in a red US state).
I'm tired of theists who actually think MAGA is a gift from God. I'm tired of people acting like beliefs in conspiracy theories like a fake moonlanding or vaccines causing autism are "differences in opinion".
I swear The Daily Wire destroyed my parents and a lot of my extended family's critical thinking skills. Especially my mother. Growing up, I swear she was a reasonably rational person. Now she is convinced she has seen aliens and the government hates Christianity and wants to make everyone transgender.
I'm a grad student working on a PhD in experimental psychology, focused on cognitive neuroscience. My uncle, who barely talks to me, called the other day to tell me about how everything I'm doing is fake and satanic. I legitimately study how visual attention changes when observers are standing still vs when they are reaching for stuff. Nothing "controversial"; I'd be willing to bet most people believe brains control our motor outputs and our eyes move in relation to tasks we are performing.. Apparently not my uncle, because he found out from his pastor that "Psychology is a wolf in sheep's clothing".
I also recently found out my friend voted MAGA. Which was odd to me because he's gay. I asked him why. He said it was for religious reasons. I asked him if he's aware about transphobic stuff Trump has said and linked to Trumps agenda47 video in which he lies about trans people and claims he'll push aggressive policies against "the radical left gender ideologies". He said he knows. I asked him if he's anti-trans. He said that he is an ally. I was so shocked how it didn't even remotely seem contradictory to him. He seemed convinced that schools are doing sex reassignment surgery on children. I asked for evidence and he said it's his opinion.
I'm struggling to workout the cognitive dissonance of if I can even handle being his friend anymore. I'm also ridiculously pro-trans and I just can't with fake allies. I know that may be dramatic of me but it's upsetting to listen to people believe in ridiculous things without any proof and base their actions off of it.
The alliance between conspiracy theories, MAGA media, and the religious is such a horrifying force. The distaste for research is frustrating. I almost try not to mention I do research around people anymore because it's almost like a "joy" for them to tell researchers why what they do is incorrect.
I'm truly so frustrated. I'm sure some of it is me needing to find new connections, but it's hard given my geographic location. I'm also bound here for at least a couple more years.

Mark Andrews came into this year at around the TE6 spot on KTC. After the horrific start to the year, people panicked on him. Just think about it. max's timeline makes no sense. Furiosa seems to be 20-30 and she was born into the apocalypse. that would make max 50-60. he doesnt look it. and max being a different looking person. it makes sense. in the road warrior the vehicles didnt look this crazy. this has to be an alternate universe. in this movie he is running from something else. the little girl from the comic. "Where were you max?" max seems to have something new. he never seems to think about sprog or jessie. the world looks more vibrant. in fury road the world fucked itself. in mad max1 it was just being taken over by bikers and bad people. the same things might have happened to this max. max is not our 80's max. hes new. he is set in an alternate universe. im sure you guys will dissagree but i guess we will see lol.
