Hi. My ex (who is a DA) used intermittent reinforcement a lot when I used to be in a relationship with him. I know DAs and to some extent FAs are known for their inconsistencies, but I also know a lot of people use intermittent reinforcement as a manipulation tactic to keep their partners hooked or addicted to the relationship.
I know the end result is the same whether or not it was intentional or not, but I want to believe that my ex was just unaware he was using it. Like after I found that he had Tinder on his phone, he took me out on a very nice date and spend the whole day with me (which was very rare for him). When he got angry with me for booking his appointment for wrong, he was silent for at least 2 weeks and told me that I made him angry and to never do it again.
When I decided to check his followings on Instagram, I saw that he followed lots of dating coaches and a lot of them were catered to men. Now nothing wrong with that but I heard a lot of these types of coaches teach people intermittent reinforcement to make sure the women keeps coming back to the relationship. I want to ask him directly but I am going no contact with him. Any help on how to recognize if it was intentional or not? How to spot it in the beginning?

Older couple in their mid 50’s. We never had any real money to invest until we paid our house off a couple of years ago, and now that we do, are looking to maximize our savings so we can retire in 5 years.
Right now, most of our money is in GIC’s (TFSA) earning 4.5 % to 5.75%. We have 40K of unplaced funds that we want to put into an RRSP for the 2024 tax year. We also each have 16K of GIC’s (TFSA) maturing in January.
I was ok making +5% on my GICs but the current rates are not at all attractive. Plan was to move the money to Wealthsimple (transfer fee refunded) and invest most in an XBAL with some in an XGRO. I was originally comfortable with that plan, BUT two things are now weighing on my mind: 1) Market is high right now. 2) Trump’s looming threats of Tariffs are going to disrupt the market (actioned or not).
So now I’m wondering if I should just play it safe and park most (if not all) of the money in a GIC for the next 2 years.
For additional context, 10% of the money would be withdrawn each year starting from mid 2030 until the end of 2038 so the investment horizon is from 5.5 to 14 years.
