 | 75G aquarium with 20G sump for $400 I want to begin with a disclaimer that this is my first aquarium and I haven't cycled my tank yet, but I spent dozens of hours over the last few weeks finding deals and DIY solutions and wanted to share what I found and get feedback on potential design flaws. My goal is to start simple, monitor water quality and only purchase chemicals if I need them, but if there are other basic supplies I missed please let me know! Also, I found a 600gph return pump but haven't pulled the trigger on it yet. I read soft corals can tolerate lower flow rates (10x tank volume). What's the highest flow rate return pump that would work for this set up without causing turbulence? What's the lowest flow rate for soft corals without purchasing powerheads? For hard corals, powerhead flow rate is more important than return pump, right? Biggest money-savers: - Replacing overflow box with a siphon (with failsafe design to prevent flooding)--the $100-200 saved is NOT worth thousands in flood damage! See below for more info. - DIY protein skimmer - Purchasing pre-owned tank - Doing a fishless cycle instead of live rock - I also lucked out and found 125 lbs of dry live rock for free, but OfferUp and FB Marketplace had multiple sellers offering $1/lb so still affordable ($75) for the 1 lb/gal rule Supplies and Sources DIY: Protein skimmer: - Inspiration - Uses airstone to funnel bubbles (and dissolved organic matter aka DOM) upward into PVC pipe which dumps into plastic bottle with overflow drainage. Planning to monitor water quality and modify design if necessary. - Modifications: increasing tube length (more contact time for bubbles to collect DOMs), reducing bubble size (more surface area for DOMs), flow control valve to increase foam production, increasing airflow with stronger pump. Scalable by making multiple skimmers. 20G sump w/ baffles: - I would recommend just buying a used 20G for the sump and ousing glass sheet only for DIY baffles. I only did this as a test since I eventually want to make a rimless tank by laminating thin (i.e., cheap) glass sheets together to make thick safety glass. - There are plenty of tutorial to choose from, but I used this one for tank assembly (without baffles). - I used 0.093-inch glass sheets, very fragile. Fine for baffles but need to be doubled for the tank itself. Two sheets can be laminated together using epoxy or EVA film, or glued together with silione (if appearance is not important). Used 6mm EVA foam for leveling mat. Circulation system: - Both siphon and return pipe open into breeder box to isolate from livestock. - Anti-siphon holes (1/8-in) drilled into 1/2-in silicone tubing will break siphon if exposed to air. Drilled in both ends of the siphon tube, only the aquarium end of the return pump tube. They should not be drilled near the return pump, since turbulence can alter flow rate and damage pump during normal operation. - Instead, the return pump will be elevated so the intake is 2 inches below the sump waterline as a failsafe (the same level the anti-siphon holes would have been placed). If the waterlevel drops to this point, the air may kill the pump, but I prefer that to flooding. - I'm also going to make DIY Arduino "dry alarms" ($20-40) that alert if waterlevels fall below a certain height, so I'll know something is "off" before a failsafe is even triggered. There are also inexpensive water alarms that can be placed around the aquarium to alert you to flooding. Overflow potential and capacity calculated based on airspace and tank dimensions. Overflow potential is the volume that can drain from tank before anti-siphon holes break siphon. Overflow capacity is the maximum overflow volume that can be contained by the airspace in the tank. hello!! i just got my bloodwork done for the first time in like 3 months (18 years old and 1 year on t). my levels were very high, i measured at trough (day of my shot) and had 29.1 nmol/L (or 839 ng/dL). i'm with an online pharmacy and they write my prescriptions with Al and I don't feel they really check my blood tests which is likely how this happened. my dose got upped three months ago and this is my first test since then. i haven't had my period come back or felt irritable or anything. i don't want to skip my next shot because it completely tanks my energy, and i will be lowering my dose again. my question is basically will this impact my transition? like will my face feminize and such since my estrogen has probably increased too (didn't measure it on this test tho), am i better off lowering my dose or increasing the time in between shots (currently weekly) i am freaking out a bit and anxious that this has meant im moving backwards the past three months. drop any advice
