Idk if this is the right subreddit but I figure my severe social anxiety probably has somethin to do with this so 🤷♀️
I work with young children. I love working with kids and am generally a more soft spoken, creative-type person. However, that makes it harder when I need to set boundaries for the kids (which my coworkers have encouraged me to do more) in a firm tone that just doesn't come naturally to me and sometimes sounds unintentionally angry. It's also sometimes hard for me to tell when I need to use that voice.
Earlier today, my boss called me into her office and very kindly talked to me about how a parent called her concerned because I chastised a child for hitting someone even though he didn't do it. I was mortified because I couldn't even remember it happening -- my guess is that I probably didn't fully see it happen and just assumed this child did it because he often hits others. Even if he does do this, it absolutely does not mean that I should assume it's him when I don't have all the facts. The parent thinks that I don't like her son, which is even more upsetting because I actually really like him. He has some trouble playing safely and listening, but he reminds me a lot of my brother and he's been having some really big moments of growth that I'm so proud of him for. He's also pretty young, so while it's common for us to talk about him hitting, I'm don't expect him to understand right away because he's still learning. I'm horrified that I behaved in a way that made his mom think that I don't like him, which reminds me of the behavior of my brother's teachers he had growing up that I hated.
On top of all of this guilt I feel from the situation itself, I think it triggered this core insecurity I have where I think I'm a worthless monster who's hurting everyone around me (some context: I used to have frequent panic attacks and rely on friends too much, which was taxing for everyone involved. I felt like such a burden and lost some friends due to this. I constantly felt like an evil person who hurts everyone when I'm trying so hard not to. It took a long time to get out of that headspace, but I've developed a really healthy and more positive self-view. This situation is the first time in a while where some of those old feelings are coming up again). It's made me spiral, and I've been crying for the past couple of hours after my shift ended. I just hate the idea that a mother feels like her child is being taken care of by someone who doesn't like them, and I feel disgusted by myself. I keep wondering if the child feels the way his mom does and I'm asking myself how I could have behaved in such a way. I want so badly to apologize to the mom but a) I don't know if it's appropriate and b) I don't want to do it for the wrong reasons ie just to make myself feel better. She deserves an apology and it makes me feel so anxious to think of a parent thinking of me in this way.
I'm working again tomorrow, but I'm so anxious and guilt-ridden that I can't sleep and I feel sick. I feel horrible about the child and his mother (plus making the center I work at look bad), and it feels gut-wrenching to have this old wound opened again. I'm not sure what I'm looking for by posting this, but I hope that it will at least help me sleep if I do.
