I'd like to talk about something that's been bothering me. The oil was poured into the fire by Tim Mortem's recent speech, where he as a production director said in general not senseless things about the failure of the game in early access, but it all looks too far from the real problems of the game.
It's amazing how the people running this company can't see or won't admit the obvious. The game is just boring, dull and ugly, and extremely far from its PR campaign. What follows will be a few points that could potentially fix everything, but we'll have to admit the mistakes at least to ourselves. And so.
- And most importantly. Throw the hell out of the whole art style. It looks cheesy. There's nothing wrong with the cartoon aesthetic chosen, but right now it just looks talentless. It's hard to summarize in words because visual perception is more about the realm of the sensual. Just change the art director to someone more prominent. I'm sure most of the assets can be redone not from scratch. But you'll have to do it. Otherwise nothing will save you.
- Add FUN to the game. Right now the game is just stuffy to play. It's too slow. The first 6 minutes are unbearable. Make the maps more contactable. Right now they are just huge. Artosis has already talked about this. The same goes for points of interest. Decrease time to kill by at least double. And unit speed by 1.5. I may have lied with the numbers, at the very least after playtests you can cut half off. The most powerful units are unbearably slow. Yes, they should be slower I agree, but not like this.
- More of a political thing, but in this situation I think it's necessary to regain people's trust. Enough with the Blizzard glory. Yes, you worked there once, but now it has nothing to do with the quality of Blizzard. And it's not just about budget at all. We all know examples of RTSs that are also in development with budgets much lower, where in terms of design the game looks an order of magnitude better. Start building your brand without mentioning Blizzard and ranting about the next great RTS, and better yet, publicly admit you shit yourself. And then you won't have to cry in a speech about how Wild West the Steam community is.
What else you could have done, what else you could have focused on to make things even better.
- Forget about the campaign now. It's not going to save you. Throw all your efforts into finalizing 1x1, coop and 3x3 modes. Campaign will only embarrass you more and distract you from the main thing. And the whole idea of selling the campaign in parts is super lame. Fire whoever came up with that. You'll just be hated and mocked even more for it.
- Think about adding heroes in 1x1 mode. It's as simple as two times two. There are creeps, there should be heroes. You already have creeps, so you need heroes. Otherwise it's just plain STRANGE. You don't have to make it like Warcraft 3. It can be copy-paste heroes from co-op with a few units replaced - commander mechanics. That way your game will just look different, and that's a damn big deal for Stormgate so far. Plus it will set it apart from both sc2 and wc3. It's exactly what REALLY Stormgate needs to gain autonomy.
- Add more courage and iteration. The roadmap right now only looks interesting from a techie's perspective. Right now the main problem isn't the lack of an editor or AI improvements or perfomance optimization or whatever... The main problem right now is poorly (past) tuned gameplay. More radical changes are needed. Stop pretending everything is going according to plan. The game's online is going to zero.
Honestly, I have big concerns about the 3x3 mode. I've read the concept. There's a feeling that you've messed up again and no one will play it. But again, there's a commander system in there as well as some automation to the building process. That's great. Bring back the top panel and make it part of all the main modes.
What you should probably strive for first and foremost is all of your main modes should look cohesive and consistent. That's something to strive for. Not make 3 different games in 3 modes. It will waaaay better then it now. Everything else may well come from the community. Just provide a base.
