2024.11.28 02:59 Consistent-Fan535 Just got my skink today and I want some advice on my tank set up plus tips.
 | Ok so I did it, I got my skink and I honestly couldn't be happier! With that said I also got a 40 gallon breeder with zoomed forest floor Cyprus Mulch substrate, a corkwood hide, a synthetic log, some plastic plants and a big ass rock cave hide. (As well as the halogen heat lamp 100 Watts) From what I could tell he seems to be enjoying his new home, I set up the water bowl, cork hide, and and bedding, ooh and I forgot to mention, I placed a piece of tile directly under his basking lamp so that it would be nice and warm. Anywho, I did that , then I left for more supplies. Roughly about an hr later I returned With his brand new cave and some wet dog food. Chicken flavored to be exact. I found him basking over the tile and right then and there I cracked open the dog food and got a little dish. At first I grabbed some tongs and grabbed a little chunk of chicken and I waved it ever so slightly in front of him, it took him like five or six seconds but after that he took to it. Then I decided to leave the dish in there and he crawled over to it and lapped the rest of it up. I was a bit unsure about trying to feed him because I heard that sometimes they need to adjust to their new habitats before they feel comfortable enough to eat. That wasn't the case with me, he seemed to eat just fine and after basking for a while, he was noticably a bit more quick and agile too! I suppose the crux of my question is, am I doing a good job so far??? Like is the set up something that he'll feel comfortable and safe in and what can I do to ensure that he gets everything he needs? Below are a list of some followup questions that I was thinking about asking: 1.) In terms of substrate I got the zoomed Cyprus Mulch, I did some research prior and I came to the conclusion that this was the safest option, as it makes for easy burrowing and is a little damp to hold in humidity longer and I hear it doesn't mold like other things like Aspen or what have you. With that established, how often if at all should I mist the enclosure (being that he's a northern, I take it not as often as needed for an indo) ooh another thing I live in South Texas, Laredo specifically so the natural temps down here are usually in the high 90's to hundreds, granted, we have aircon in our home and we usually keep the thermostat at 75° flat. How would that impact my animal? 2.) The lamp that I got is suspended via an adjustable staff and wire...does it necessarily matter if the lamp/dome is above the mesh top of the tank or does it have to be actively resting on top of the tank. Dad left it suspended above because he didn't want the heat from the lamp to melt the mesh. I don't think it's that strong but then again I'm not sure. This is my first lizard after all. For context, I've only kept snakes, and those are pretty low maintenance. (two kings and a milk) 3.) Do I have to turn the lamp off at night time? From what I can tell, it's completely natural for them to experience a night time temp drop, so long as the overall ambient temp doesn't go below 70°. As stated previously we keep the house at 75° so he should be good right? I was debating about getting an under tank heat pad just in case and leaving it on over night while the heat lamp was off. Is that a thing? Also, apparently we might be getting a cold front starting tomorrow, should I be concerned about that? If we raise the house tem to idk let's just say one or two more degrees, will that impact my skink? Right now the hydrometer is reading a "moderate humidity level (52%) and the thermometer is reading what looks like something in between (75-80°) is this cozy for him? 4.) The water dish is situated more or less directly in the middle of the tank, is that good, bad? I had it in the far left (which was the cool side) but when I got the rock cave it was bigger than I anticipated so I had to move the water dish in the middle. It's not under the light so that means the heat won't evaporate it right? Also how do I make sure that when he sheds the skin doesn't stay stuck on his toes? Can I manually peal them off or does he need a bigger dish to fit his whole self in? If so then maybe the rock cave needs to go. (I have 60 days to return that hide with the receipt) 5.) How often should I be feeding him? Based on my previous posts, the consensus was that he was most likely around 8-ish months old so I'm guessing like around 3 times a week. Definitely not daily as he's not a baby. But seeing as it's Wednesday, can I feed him tomorrow and Friday and the proceed to wait until the following Wednesday to feed again or am I supposed to space out his meals so then I guess that would mean I feed him maybe Friday, then Sunday, then maybe Tuesday or Wednesday again? Ooh and since I don't have a uvb bulb, I got some calcium powder with D3, how much of that do I mix in with his meals and is it an every meal situation or can I space that out between feeds too? Umm, well those are the questions that are floating through my mind rn, mind you I've spent hours watching vid after vid about keeping blue tongues, from multiple channels/herpers to get a wider varried array of knowledge to pull from but Lemmy tell you when you go down that rabbit hole, there are some things that contradict each other so that's why I'm asking you fine folks of reddit for help. Like I said this is my FIRST lizard, so I wanna make sure I'm doing alright with him. Another thing of note, he sneezes a lot, but I hear that's just him blowing the substrate out of his nose when he burrows so I shouldn't worry about that all that much unless accompanied with other more serious symptoms; but I digress... Please get back to me with any info and questions you have for me so that I can make absolutely sure I'm on the right track. Anything helps. Hi peeps! First off I want to say I’m very happy to have discovered this thread within the last few days. It has been a saving grace in helping me feel less alone. I was diagnosed with acute diverticulitis a few days ago & im already miserable. The pain had started last week after a night of Korean bbq (lots of steak & corn) which I believe were the culprits in me having a flare up but not entirely sure. Anyways, I’ve been on a liquid diet for two days alongside antibiotics & have just incorporated softer foods back into my diet (eggs & toast). It’s definitely very overwhelming knowing that this is something I’ll have to deal with for the rest of my life. Especially because I’m 25 and haven’t really started my life yet. I also have pcos & occasionally suffer from bppv. Recently I’ve been able to manage both of those issues previously mentioned so you can imagine the feeling of hopelessness when I found out about the diverticulitis. Truly it’s unfair. The amount of information is overwhelming & quite polarizing. Truthfully I’ve always had food as a coping mechanism for my depression, although after finding out about my pcos I really had to make some changes in my diet, I still do enjoy eating the foods I like intermittently. Since finding out about my diverticulitis though it seems like I’ll have to scrap any chance of eating for pleasure. I understand that everybody is different and maybe I won’t have to deal with any flares in my future but it’s been a roller coaster of emotions for me for the last couple of days. I’m trying to stay optimistic but man…..it’s definitely not an easy journey. Hoping to make some progress with the antibiotics and my overall health in the future but for now I can’t help but feel betrayed by my own body.
