Dayton is his name. Ever since I met this guy at work, I’ve had issues with him. He's loud, obnoxious, and annoying. He seems to lack the capacity to take anything seriously, which is very distracting for someone like me who’s just trying to do their job. He also teased me a lot and called me nicknames that I didn’t like, which really got under my skin. I personally have no patience for buffoonery and unprofessionalism, and that was how Dayton acted every time I worked with him. Even so, I can understand that some people have higher energies than others and that he might have been trying to lighten the mood for everyone around him. I myself don’t respond well to teasing, but I really do understand why people do it. It really wasn’t a big deal. However, what he said last night was completely uncalled for.
As everybody was winding down and getting ready to close, Dayton took a Culver’s token and started flipping it like a coin. He started claiming that if it landed on heads, I “was dating Arianna.” This made me very uncomfortable, as Arianna is my friend, I do not see her in that light. Since Dayton was being loud about this, the other members also asked if we were dating, as apparently, they had been wondering about this as well. This made me uncomfortable even more. Panicked, I tried to explain to everyone around that we were only friends, and Arianna explained that she already had a boyfriend, going to the back to retrieve her phone to show photos of him. I couldn’t believe what I was hearing from everyone around me. I could not fathom why it would be such a hard concept to grasp that a guy and a gal could be close friends and not be interested in dating each other. “Is it that foreign a concept?”, I thought. “How is this hard to understand?”
I may not be asexual, but I am a man who takes friendship very seriously (hence why I'm posting this here because I'm sure you would appreciate it), and I am abstaining from the dating scene until I am fully independent, as I believe that dating when you’re young is too risky and can lead to long-term consequences that young people often aren’t ready to handle. Learning to treat people respectfully and platonically is extremely important in my opinion, and there are way too many people out there who don’t know how to do that.
Anyway, I was worried that Dayton and everyone else was going to keep spreading this rumor that would make me and Arianna both very uncomfortable. I was already very anxious and on edge, but what Dayton said next completely crossed the line. He literally said “you’re just trying to get into her pants.” I don’t care if he thought it was a joke, because he’s the only one that would find that funny. Not only is such a brazenly sexual comment completely unprofessional, but it was disgusting and demeaning in a way that constitutes sexual harassment against both me and her.
Now, I’m usually the most docile person around. I avoid confrontation at all costs, and I usually don’t even speak unless spoken to first. I’m nervous and timid 90% of the time. Still, I couldn’t believe what I had heard. “How can anyone say something so disrespectful and foul?”, I thought. It spat in the face of my friendship with Arianna and everything I believed in. I had to stand up if not for myself, then for her. That’s when I lost my temper. I threw my hand at him in a way where my fingers regrettably only grazed his face, yelled at him for daring to say such a vile thing to us, and demanded that he never say anything of that nature again. After that, I was led to the back room and sent home.
Today, I texted my boss Erin and told what happened, and while she may be super understanding and the best boss I've had so far, she reviewed the camera footage and had no choice but to let me go. Thankfully, Dayton was fired too for his blatant sexual harassment. Even so, I find it injust that he and I were punished in equal measure, even if I completely understand why it was done. I don't regret what I did, only that I was fired for it. I don't care if he's minor. Young people (especially teenagers) should not be immune to getting their asses beat. He could have insulted and annoyed me all he wanted and I wouldn't be that angry, but the moment he said something sexual about my friend, it was over. Nobody speaks to my friends like that.
