Hey y’all, I could really use some help and advice here. I’m a Black girl about to go to college for the first time, and it’s all the way across the country. While I’m super excited, I’m also really nervous because I’ve realized I never properly learned how to take care of my hair.
Here’s the deal: since I was about 10, I’ve been getting silk presses and keratin treatments, which have left my natural hair pretty damaged. Right now, I’m wearing sew-ins with a partial leave-out, but I struggle so much to blend my leave-out despite watching what feels like every tutorial on YouTube. Closures could be an option, but I feel like they make my round face look weird. Wigs? Forget about it—I can’t keep one on to save my life.
Braids could be another route, but I honestly feel like they’re unflattering on my face shape (very round/baby-faced). I’ve realized I feel best when my hair has some sort of face-framing layers, like a curtain bang situation, but I have no idea how to achieve that in a way that’s easy to manage and protective.
To make things even more stressful, I really want to connect with other Black girls at my new school, but I’m worried my hair will make me stand out in the worst way. I don’t want to come off as the whitewashed Black girl from the suburbs, but at the same time, I want a style that’s flattering and doable for someone who’s still learning how to care for her hair.
Do you guys have any suggestions for beginner-friendly, flattering styles for a round face that could help me out? Whether it’s products, techniques, or specific hairstyles, I’m all ears. Please help a girl out before I make a huge mistake!
