Hi! Iâm looking for great quality headphones for an autistic friend of mine. I want to buy it off amazon because I donât drive. My budget is no more $50. She uses them at the grocery store or the gym. Mostly for noise cancellation or just to hear herself think. But sometimes for podcasts or phone calls. Not much for music. Iâm not too sure about what tonal balance she prefers honestlyâŚShe recently had some that broke within 3 months, they work but theyâre taped together with duct tape. I was a NOVA millennial. I went to the same school âsystemâ from kindergarten through HS. I was, from an academic standpoint, a great student and was pushed heavily by our schoolâs admin to enroll in governorâs school when the time came. I should clarify and say my parents were the ones âencouragedâ but ultimately decided it wouldnât be a good fit for me.
From my perspective there were a handful of kids my age that I had gone to school with since kindergarten that were the âgifted programâ students. We were the ones that they offered some elementary special math and reading programs to. We were âfriendsâ by association. Our parents all knew the other parents from over a decade of seeing their kids. Many of them enrolled in GS. The narrative I was fed from my parents one in high school is it was this geeky program, Iâd have to get up extra early, and the classes were super hard for like no reason. I ended up being an AP & DE class taker, joined a few clubs, and was in band all 4 years (whoâs the nerd now?!)
Fast forward to college enrollment. I only applied out of state and my parents asked 4 out of state admissions folks about governorâs school and none of them had any clue what they were talking about. They did say my AP and DE credits would be great to have. I think my parents felt validated in their decision to not enroll me. I would go on and have a successful university track and career.
I look back on those times now. What did I miss out on? Has governorâs school changed? Is it still being pushed and what is the sell point? Is it now more nationally recognized? Has anyone here from my generation gone and realized any benefit? Any buyerâs remorse? I google it now and it honestly sounds like a good program with things like fun arts related opportunities. But from a practical standpoint are you just loading up with work for no benefit at the college level?
