2024.11.29 12:53 LBAIGL Vet friend we Baker Acted for PTSD episode, still drinking badly. How to help??

Well, Veterans Day I posted about a scary suicide attempt with a gun situation after our veteran friend and roommate had a PTSD episode.
Quick update: 7 day stay, hospital released friend when they signed away their gun rights/ownership for a year. (Otherwise it would've been a 90 day hold)
Problem is.. still drinking. When they aren't working, they're coming home blitzed (can't even stand up, much less function)
Skip to Turkey Day. Long story short..same thing happened. 2 hrs of me locking myself in the bedroom because they came home so drunk they nearly passed out twice and fell down the stairs by the front door.(My motion camera caught this part). Friend was erratically screaming, crying, punching things, cursing.
Thought they broke or sprained their ankle and were demanding my partner come home to help them (I didn't know this part, and honestly I was too on edge to alert friend that I was home) and help them.
Partner got them food, they ate, and they fell asleep. Didn't want to go to the hospital ASAP because obviously thought they'd take friend back to the psych ward for being so drunk. We want to take them this AM very early.
Friend was repeating the same thing..I don't want to be here anymore, then saying they were joking around and please don't call the cops.
Since the release, there's tension. They say they're moving out but can't find a place. And there's an air of resentment.
Towards my partner somewhat (they've been childhood friends since 7, and supported each other through traumas) but friend won't even look me in the eye.. and acts very edgy towards me now if I try to talk to them. Just has an air of resentment/distrust to me.
They also think we were in the wrong for having them baker acted. So overall both of us are feeling like we can't even be in the house half the time when friend is like this.
Because friend was a 2 tour combat veteran with PTSD and there was a a suicide attempt with a gun involved, VA psych ward had friend on 24/7 supervised one on one suicide watch. Locked doors, no outside, etc. said they felt like a criminal. Said being in Afghanistan would have been better.
All of this is to say...are there ANY government programs that I could call and help get friend housing? Even if it isn't a house that they buy? I think that might be best, but also..how the hell do we help them get through this drinking without alerting the VA Hospital?
We don't know how to help our friend with their struggles.

Hi!! After being on this sub for a couple of months, I’ve seen people who’ve been fans since the 90’s, and some people who’re are just getting into Ranma thanks to the beautiful remake, some also own the manga. So I’m curious about how you got to know this work. I’ll start.
In 1996, I was getting into anime under my older brother’s influence. I was 15 and, to be honest, I watched some anime mostly because of him pushing me to do what he wanted me to do rather than because of my own will. I don’t mean I didn’t enjoy it, but I wouldn’t have started watching anime if it wasn’t for his influence.
In those years, having access to anime here in Chile was hard, and expensive. There were some stores that sold VHS’s and mangas but everything was either subbed in English or dubbed in European Spanish. So for us who didn’t have enough money to buy all the series, and you couldn’t rent them because VHS’s rental places didn’t carry anime, there was a movie theatre that showed anime every week for a very low price, but everything in English or sometimes in Japanese without subtitles. Most of us didn’t understand a single thing, but we went there because of the “experience”
Well all that introduction was to get some context. One day, a friend of my brother who came from a wealthy family, and could afford getting all those expensive VHS’s, lent him the whole first season of Ranma, subbed in English. So I decided to give it a try. And it blew my mind. The characters, the comedy, the gender thing (I’m not queer but still I thought that the gender issue was ahead of its time) the music, the action, the romance. I don’t know what else it was but I fell in love with the show and I lost count of how many times I watched it. Since it was in English and I knew little, I had to use a dictionary to understand the subtitles, and thanks to that I learned a lot of English.
Also I watched some OVA’s and movies lent by the same friend and I was just hooked, I wanted to watch the other seasons but they weren’t available, so I kept watching the first one. Until 1998, I think was the year, that Ranma came to national television. I was thrilled, I was finally gonna be able to watch the whole thing. The Latin American dubbing was excellent, I was used to the Japanese voices but these ones didn’t disappoint. So I watched the show every time it was on air.
In the 2000’s I began collecting the manga, and I own most of it, the Argentinian version from Editorial IVREA, translated into Argentinian Spanish, I don’t have all the volumes but my collection is almost complete.
Fast forward to today, I’m thrilled with the remake, it’s so well done, and although I grew up with the classic, this version has enough differences to be able to enjoy it as a separate piece of work. I was hesitant at first, but I’m pleasantly surprised. And I’m glad it’s not exactly the same as the classic, what would be the point of repeating the same thing again? I feel 15 again when I watch it, even though I’m 44 now. These characters hold a special place in my heart.
