So here's the overview: I (19m) met my ex-girlfriend (19f) a few years ago in school, began dating when we were both 17 and were together for about 8-9 months until I broke up with her. It's been over a year since then, and I feel relieved but also guilty for pushing her out of my life.
Now for the long-ish story... there's so much that happened so I'm going to summarize it (yes I know it still looks long... ahh)
There weren't any major things that happened and she was really nice, but there were just a few things that I couldn't quite get past. Initially she would laugh at me for owning an iPad because it was "childish", which slowly developed into her treating me like I was a child. By that I mean she would talk for me when someone spoke to me, yell at me to keep up when we were walking so that I "didn't get lost" or just grab my arm and drag me along if I didn't catch up, ban me from kitchens so I don't ruin things etc. but i guess it was kind of funny.
She also assumed I was incapable of a variety of things like being strong and having random talents (e.g. playing instruments which I believe I'd told her about several times, but I might be wrong). She'd call me names that reminded me of traumatic experiences (I told her about it, she said she would stop, but then she didn't. She also got some mutual friends to call me those names too, but honestly i need to be less sensitive anyway so its no big deal) and consistently made fun of my height on a regular basis (which is funny to a certain extent but it hurt a bit because i had a growth stunt in my teenage years due to an eating disorder (which was still active while we were dating) and she was aware of this, but she probably forgot so im not blaming her).
She was also really into physical contact/affection and enforced long hugging sessions every time we met (and by every time, I mean that we could be wandering around somewhere and whenever we get within a metre of each other... that's time for another hug). I don't mind hugging etc. and it's a relationship so of course that's to be expected, but I just don't like being caught off-guard with someone jumping on me from behind when I can't see them coming. I tried to talk to her about it a few times but she just started clinging on harder and joked about the whole situation and how it didn't matter because she had attachment issues etc. Oh and there was a bunch of forced-s3xual stuff that I wasn't really comfortable with e.g. her making me do stuff in public despite the fact that I already had social anxiety... but it made her happy so its okay.
It all sort of got a bit too much for me, so I tried to break up with her but she started crying and saying that this would hurt her, and I didn't want her to be upset so I stayed for a few more months. Everything kept going further "downhill" in my mind, so I tried breaking up a few more times but she wouldnt let me and threatened me with jokes of offing herself because I was "the only reason she's alive" which eventually turned into jokes that she would off me if I left. At this point I was starting to see what her last ex meant by "she's very clingy" and I stayed for another month before realising I could no longer handle it. I knew she hadn't done anything wrong and I was being extremely selfish, but I had this constant string being tugged in my heart saying "hey this hurts" so I finally managed to break up with her and said I was sorry, gave her hugs etc. but managed to salvage things a bit by saying I would be her friend still, just not her boyfriend.
It's now been over a year since then, and several months since we last spoke. I've asked a few mutual friends about it and one is on "my side" but others seem to think I'm overreacting and that my ex was kind and funny and I shouldn't have broken up with her. I still feel guilty over this and feel that I should have done more to accommodate her needs and been less selfish with my choices, but I also know that I wasn't enough for her. I know she didn't do anything wrong but I'm just too sensitive to cope with that situation.
So AITAH? Should I have stayed, tried to accustom myself to it more, and avoided hurting her?
