So TIL the block does NOT charge the probes if you have the USB plugged in but no batteries in the block... I hadn't replaced the batteries yet from my last cook but the last couple days had the block plugged in to charge the probes. I just put our turkeys on the grill, powered up the block and started setting the cooks only to find that all the probes are almost dead. The power quirks with this block are almost as annoying as the connectivity issues.

I'm pretty late to the party, but I discovered this show only recently. I watched all the seasons in no time and it was a nice experience overall. At the end, I found myself more attached to it than I initially thought to the point I felt the need to express my opinion about one of the most controversial couple of this show: Tomjake. Let me get straight to the point: I like them. But were they really that good? Of course I've read other people's opinions before writing my own and I quickly realized that usually people tend to be on one side: to love them, to hate them. I'll try to be as objective as possible, because I like this couple but I'm aware of their flags at the same time. I hope this post won't be excessively long, because I don't really want to cover obvious aspects of their relationship, only the most crucial parts in S1.
-The first episodes Now, I really think both Tom and Jake don't have remarkables feature, if we exclude Tom's outfit. He's mysterious as many others said, he's shown to be strong in the challenges and bla bla, there's not much more. Maybe the first challenge hid a sort of foreshadow, as Tom was fooled by Fiore because of the fake flag. We can assume he saw the flag of his own team, he even said to Miriam and the girls to watch for it, but for some reason he didn't think twice when he got the fake flag from the purple team. Yeaaah...quite the messy spy. If you think about it, this challenge perfectly summarizes who Tom is: a skilled young man that puts all himself in what he does, but in the end there is always something that doesn't go according to the plan. Jake, on the other hand, looks like a likeable guy with a difficult past that haunts him. One thing that really stuck with me was how he wanted to talk with Miriam because she reminded him of her grandmother. Nice touch, but it's right in those words that you realize what kind of character Jake is. The way he behaves, the things he says, all pointing out to him being extremely insecure and looking for someone who can appreciate him.

I think some people quickly emphatized with him because of that. Fair. He's not doing anything wrong at the moment. Also, we later discover what he's been through is something most of us could have experienced once in their life.
Writers had to build their relationship. Was it done in the best of ways? I dunno. We see they share some activities together worth mentioning we also have Jake costantly trying to see what lies beneath that spy outfit ("how are you not cooking in those clothes? (...) we should go to the lake and cool off a bit :D") and eventually words of support (when Jake's grandmother died). I find this build-up to be kinda flat, like "they must end up together at any rate", whereas I like more the treatment the writers gave to Gabby and Ellie. They manage to get the best out of each other in such a sweet way (expecially when you see how Gabby is disliked by almost everyone except for Dan and Ellie). Ellie listens to Gabby, she doesn't see her as a "tool" to use in the game. On the other hand, Gabby guides Ellie to see the world in a different way. There are basis for a relationship, they started out as friends and slowly developed more serious feelings. Something that kinda lacked in Tomjake, I guess? They found each other attractive and that's it? To confirm this, later in the season, when you see their first kiss, you're led to think they're super cute (and they were, unless you dislike them) but you also realize you know almost nothing about them.
Neither them, it seems, which brings us to the next point.
-The first argument Jake and Tom are really different (please don't mind All Stars, they both forgot they were 27 and 30 years old there). Those differences had to burst out somehow and Drew Grett helped to speed up the process (a move that actually backfired, since she would have been voted out soon after). We all know what happened. Sooo...in my opinion, Jake was totally in the wrong here. It's true that other people already found out Tom's identity as a mess of a spy and it's also true that Grett explicitly said it in front of the cameras, but Tom couldn't have known that. Jake, instead, could have surely waited for a better moment to talk with him, since he had Miriam's backup all along (->he wasn't alone and he actually had someone he could rely on!). Talking to Tom like that in the middle of the challenge and assuming he lied wasn't really a bright move. Why would Jake believe Grett in the first place? Tom could very well be a spy, but it doesn't mean he'd also deceive you. He could, but in any case the show wasn't going to end in like 2 days so he had all the time to think about those info and finally talk to Tom. I believe Tom's reaction in this specific case was just fine. In this specific case.
I don't think the same when it comes to Tom's work. As Jensen said: "They didn't send the smartest spy they had". He was sloppy and he clearly didn't pay attention to his moves, that's what screwed him over. It would have happened someday, Tom seriously had to assume his own responsabilities as much as Jake had to learn to count to three before jumping to conclusions.

By the way, before going to the next point let me say that I think this situation was still acceptable. In short, they didn't talk anymore and straightly voted for each other at the next elimination ceremony. After that, Tom stated: "I really like you. But the way you behaved in the last few days made one thing clear to me. I don't really know you and I can't risk everything for someone who acts so unpredictably". We know he changed his mind after he lost his work. He actually talked to Jake and took account of his own faults: "You weren't the only selfish one. I attacked you without thinking about how you were feeling. I want us to be friends again, but let's try to be better for our sakes". Those are words coming from someone who actually did some work on himself. Even if little, there is a slight development.
Does this also happen to Jake?
-Tom's elimination I personally loved Tom's elimination. The whole situation showed how much he was involved with Jake at the point of understimating the show, hence why he told the truth to Ellie about the totem he'd just found (still a huge mistake). I mean, he didn't come there to actually play it in the first place. However, when he was eliminated, I can't help but acknowledge how Jake was again mostly in the wrong. First of all, if Jake learns something fishy about Tom, it was in his best interest to make the first move, not the other way around. Or better, Tom could have (when he saw Jake's behaviour), but he started losing interest at that point and I can fairly believe that. He had already lost his job and he gave the guy he liked a second chance to prove himself worthy. Honestly, if I were Jake, I wouldn't have cared less about what Ellie said and I'd have run full speed to Tom to understand who was lying and who was not. Jake instead not only believed all that and voted for Tom, but then begged him to use the totem after learning about Fiore's plan.
How could you even do that? You wanted him to leave, then you even had the nerve of begging him to save you. Tom was right when he said: "didn't you think you could trust ME?". At that point, Tom had already proved himself to be trustworthy more and more times. On top of that, think about what happened in the virtual world. Tom and Jake were lead to believe it was the real world and Tom protected him the whole time there. With his spy work and the reality show gone, if Tom really had had a boyfriend and was simply toying with Jake, he wouldn't have felt the need to keep the act. In fact, as expected, he used the totem to save Jake. Surely he didn't expect what came next, but that choice truly showed how he believed in Jake despite everything that happened (I'm also sure he would have saved Jake if he was given the choice after fully knowing Fiore's schemes). If he had valued the game more than Jake, he would have used the totem on himself the moment he felt something suspicious was going on.
-Conclusion The season closed with a promise. In that scene, Tom showed a grown adult personality. He realized both of them made mistakes and asked some time to Jake to grow more as individuals. He realized that he also lacked experience to deal with a serious relationship (->Jake was the first to ever see his scars) which he didn't want to ruin at all costs. We can say there definitely were some basis to start all over again. I really wish that promise was kept, though...
By the way, I know I attacked Jake quite a lot in this opinion. The truth is I don't blame him (I like him instead, for reasons my brain fails to understand) and maybe some years ago I think I'd have done exactly the same wrong choices. That may sound hypocritical from my side, but it's the truth. Even so, Jake had quite some time to learn from his past mistakes and sadly he didn't use that time in the best of ways, as he showed the same behaviour in All Stars.
But that's another story. Thanks for reading all that! I wrote what came to my mind, I didn't think it would have have ended up so much. If you have a different opinion, I'm curious to read them as well.

I'm playing Germany for the first time with Gotterdammerung and I've capitulated France and am trying to destroy their remaining forces along the Maginot line. Strangely, despite this being a pocket, they are not running out of supplies or experiencing an encirclement penalty. They do have polygon of territory in contact with Switzerland so I'm wondering if that is the problem? I've also noticed weird issues with the Frontline AI behaving strangely in the new DLC. This is happening both with the aforementioned Maginot pocket and earlier when I invaded Czechoslovakia: units rather than staying in place or advancing when ordered to attack, my units constantly are marching in circles around the enemy area, sometimes completely abandoning individual parts of the front line they are assigned to.
