There isn't enough time to run a play, clear off the Lions defenders, get the ball to a ref, get it spotted, get the FG unit on and snap the ball. Throwing to the sideline there is very risky because the Lions know you're throwing to the sideline. As far as Eberflus is concerned, everything is going fine and then when it's too late for him to do anything to stop it, Caleb changes the play and fucks everything. Either Caleb didn't understand the situation or he just decided to try and make a game winning play.
