2024.11.29 14:27 Samo096 Doctor abusive to nurses and not backed by line manager.
Hi there, will try to keep this short but just looking for some advice/ space to vent. I work as a band 6 nurse in a private hospital.
This morning in the reuss meeting a doctor was being extremely belligerent and derogatory comments about nurses, quoted saying, “nurses in this hospital are lazy and useless and don’t care”, he said this same line 4/5 times by the 5th time he said this id had enough and told him to cut it out and he’s been deeply unprofessional, he basically told me to shove it and I told him I’ll report it formally if this doesn’t stop as he was so far out of line.
In this meeting the duty manager was present alongside the hospital RMO. I had a meeting with the duty manager post this and he informed me he believed I was in the right, perhaps my tone was a bit sharp (which is valid feedback), but what I said was professional and I didn’t personally attack him in any form whatsoever. And he is a full witness and states I was right to call him out.
This is when it gets complicated and I feel upset. This doctor has then emailed my line manager and told his side of the story (I also emailed her on advice of my duty manager) . Rather than my line manager getting their facts straight and talking to the duty manager first she has called me and basically talked down to me on the phone, said I need to not say anything as I’ve upset this doctor and she needs to have a meeting with me. When I pointed out what was said by this doctor etc she seemed disingenuous with her response telling me I need to know my place in the system and not say anything and the duty manager should have spoken to him and I shouldn’t have said anything, to quote “stayed in my cog”, whatever that exactly means.
I found this honestly concerning, she told me on the phone I know you’re passionate but there’s a time and place, if that’s not the time and place what is? I also find the idea I need to have a potentially disciplinary meeting a joke, in the UK is there not a point of freedom to speak up concept for this exact reason? I have a lot of respect for my line manager but she doesn’t seem to be in her staffs corner when anything like this happens.
I come from Australia and if this sort of nonsense was said by a doctor there they’d face formal action and re eduction on proper conduct, why does it seem doctors are allowed to treat nurses like a stain on their shoes?
I just really feel extremely frustrated and upset by this whole situation am I just meant to allow doctors to speak rubbish about our entire profession because they can get away with whatever they want?

 | I’m always excited about my Fall and Winter 5ks. Here is what I find: 1) About 2 minutes in, legs feel heavy! Legs feel like they are made of lead. 2) fingers enlarge and I must raise them up to help drain and massage them. They swell like hotdogs. Red with white around knuckles. Painful to bend due to swelling. It goes down eventually. 3) Wear Bioflect compression leggings underneath did not seem to make a difference that I could tell, but at least it kept my legs warmer. 4) Even fast walking does not help that “legs of lead” feeling. Sometimes I thought I might trip due to weight of leg feeling. By the time I got home, I had 15000 steps in for the day! But I finished and have one next weekend too! My last one is sign up for is NYE morning. I won’t/can’t run in spring summer. Tooooo hot and fingers start swollen from heat. There’s something else but I will edit when I remember it. Ahoj, netušíte, jak velký deal breaker pro zaměstnavatele je skutečnost, že každý týden docházím na psycho terapii? Nevím, jak to při pohovoru podat aby mě rovnou nehodili do koše, nijak mě to funkčně neovlivňuje. Pracuju jako OSVČ ale potřebovala bych změnu, neb ze současného platu prostě už nevyjdu. Ty terapie jsou vykazované na pojišťovnu, takže to není něco, co bych měla "jen tak" (ano, tohle mi už bylo řečeno). Nepotřebuju ze sebe dělat krávu na pohovorech pokud se tomu dá vyhnout.
