2024.11.29 14:27 poundmama My best friend and I are not "best friending" anymore
"Sam" (31m) and I (31f) have been best friends for 16 years. However, the last few years my interactions with "Sam" have been stilted and awkward. We have both made attempts to see each other whenever "Sam" is in town (he moved out of state after college), but it just hasn't been the same since he found out I became a Christian (we bonded over our shared secular views as awkward theatre kids from the Deep South).
This seemed to come to a head earlier this year when I got married. He was in town along with our larger extended group of best friends. He did agree to be my bridesman, but I do wonder if his heart was truly in it. I distinctly remember towards the end of the night "Sam" gave me a big long hug and told me how happy he was for me, but in retrospect, it felt like a goodbye... Fast forward to this week, he ignored my last text and didn't bother inviting me to his family's artsy-fartsy Thanksgiving that I was always, always ALWAYS welcomed to previously.
In summation, I believe that my best friend and I have both felt the weird vibes but have tried to hang on desperately for the sake of old friendship. I'm wondering how I can have a heart-to-heart conversation with him. I'm too afraid to voice it aloud. I really need some advice here.
TL;DR: Bestie and I have grown apart, not sure if/how we can repair the friendship.

Just recently, my niece was born! Her mother, my sister, is a staunch believer in meat and dairy being essential to good health, so I assume that my niece will be fed according to those principles as well. Now, this will be my first experience as a vegan around young family members. I don't want to tell my sister how to raise her daughter or cause her undue annoyance - however, eventually my niece will notice that me and my husband eat differently from everyone else at family gatherings. Presumably (knowing how curious kids are), she will have some questions about this.
What I would like to know is how others here have handled these interactions. Do you explain why you're vegan (e.g. I care about animals / the environment)? While this is the truth, it could be perceived as an attack, because it implies that the rest of the family does not care about those things (and I mean... hehe). This would probably piss off my sister and upset my niece - so while this situation will not arise for a few years, I'm wondering what the best way to handle it is.
(Of course it's my ingenious grand plan to spread the vegan propaganda to her eventually, but perhaps not when she is still so young and overly susceptible to manipulation)
