I've known my guy friend for about two years, and got closer to/caught feelings for him near the middle of this year. He didn't return my feelings. He had liked one of my friends before I started liking him, and may have had his eye on another girl since a month or two back. I don't know if this other girl and him are (still?) talking right now. We're still friends and he was kind and also chill about the rejection. We've stopped talking to each other occasionally in the past since the confession, either because it was better for me to distance myself at that point in time, or because he decided it'd be better for us to have some space in the friendship after related disagreements.
But somehow, we've always ended up shooting the shit regularly again when either one of us initiates conversation after a while and it feels (at least to me) that we can always pick back up right where we left off. Texting him feels warm and comfortable and easy and when we resume our usual rhythm, our conversations are honestly one of the highlights of my days. They're usually related to our hobbies/new pursuits (though he has a much wider range and is much better at them than me), links/pics. we send each other and stuff currently going on in our lives, with some joking/teasing mixed in. Even after we take a hiatus, we don't really acknowledge it after the fact and it feels so natural and familiar to slip back into our past rapport. The banter we exchange every now and then feels to me a testament of the fact. I do sometimes feel like he uses his knowledge of my feelings for him to get more rises out of me but this has stopped since we'd stopped talking about stuff related to relationships back in Sept..
Recently, after our exams, was no different, and I fell hard onto old habits when he'd randomly congratulated me on finishing finals a month or so after we took another break. This time though, I was quite surprised/heartened by the fact that he was the one who messaged me first post-break because the scant comment he'd left on my grad. book did not really allude to this happening. Also, if not for the fact that he'd messaged me again, we might not have had the chance to interact naturally anymore (unless we end up having friend meetups) once we go on to pursue our goals in the next stage of our lives. However, it also kinda undid the good work I'd done the past month trying to rationalise away my feelings for him. (To be honest, a part of me still wonders why he'd sent that message all of a sudden because the way I saw it till then was that he was prepared to just slow-fade out of my life (and the grad. book comment didn't really help hah)).
I've realised since a while back that whenever I resume talking to him, I start overthinking and feeling insecure and jealous again. Back when we followed each other on Spotify, I'd start overanalysing the lyrics of whatever love song he listened to, no matter if it was a relatively popular pop jingle, a somewhat underground indie jam or a more obscure, soulful and jazzy melody. I'd question if he was thinking about a certain girl for the duration of the song and get my feathers all ruffled for that stupid reason. I do the same when he follows someone new/gets followed on social media. While I know how inane (and self-absorbed) this is, I always let the emotional parts of my brain override the rational ones because for one, I still feel quite bothered about not being able to fill that special place in his life, and for two, I'm anxious about losing the place I already do hold in it.
When I'm alone, or rather rarely, hyperfocused on a particular worthwhile pursuit, my best self comes to the forefront and I'm the most mature, industrious, principled, rational and charming version of myself (or so I believe). I mean, Ben Whittaker from The Intern is one of my new role-models FFS. I feel like this all goes haywire whenever I get too into my head and start overthinking about all sorts of relationship-related stuff that detracts my energy and attention from all the things I could be doing to better myself. No kidding, this has affected my academics too (though I'm slowly and belatedly working on it). The worst thing is that I feel like he's rarely gotten to see this side of me and might just have based his opinions of me on the more chaotic, talkative, airheaded, disorganised, distracted and immature version he's seen in class/whenever I'm not at my best. For all I know, this could've contributed to the rejection too.
The thing is, I'm glad he's still in my life even in this more limited capacity because he's really a stand-up guy who is kind, intelligent, altruistic (even if he says he isn't), goofy, capable, driven and inspiring. The stuff he's taught me through our convos., his nerd-out sessions or his actions have also enriched my life (though obviously I treasure him for him and not for what he contributes). I don't like contending with the dissonance between how I see him and how he sees me (unless it's miraculously changed since then but that's my delusions speaking). Nonetheless, distancing myself suddenly (again) because of my dumb emotions wouldn't just put a strain on our friendship and be unfair to him but would also leave a bit of a hole in my heart (well, hypothalamus). I still want to be in his life and for him to be (in) mine, and the hypothalamus wants what it wants. But if I like myself better as a person during the times that I don't talk to him, is that really the right choice?
