2024.11.29 16:50 RateObvious I just binged all 8 seasons of GoT for the first time. Here are my consolidated thoughts.
I was pretty much a blank slate going into it, with a few exceptions: (1) I vaguely knew that the main character dies early in the show, but I didn't know who or when (2) I heard about "the red wedding" where many main characters die, but again I didn't know who or when, and (3) I knew fans hated the last seasons, but didn't know why.
All of this made for a very exciting viewing experience. Not only was it a great show on its own, but it was like visiting the archives of a popular culture that I never understood when it was popular. All the frustration of not getting the references those 10 years ago, suddenly evaporating. It was therapeutic. Even getting to the dreaded 8th season, I was so excited just to be let in on the joke. After binging the show, I came here and binged on this subreddit. So here are some overall thoughts I had throughout the show, in no particular order:
- First half of the show vs. second half. Probably nothing original here. Seasons 1-4 were magical. They went above what I thought TV was capable of. Seasons 5-8 were typical period drama. A good period drama, to be fair (minus s8), but typical. It felt like a normal TV show again in terms of how it was written. That makes perfect sense, given that's about when the source material ran out. And just like everyone else, I'm livid about all the set-ups throughout the whole show that ended up having zero payoffs.
- WHY IS THIS SHOW SO DARK??. I mean, literally. This wasn't really a problem in the earlier seasons, but by the later seasons I could. not. see. shit. I gave up trying to strain my eyes. Some scenes literally became "GoT: the radio show" for me. I have a theory, that the editing monitors they used must be high quality enough, that the darkness is only a problem on consumer monitors like mine. Huge oversight.
- 1-Dimensional Characters. I define a 1D character as one that can be fully predicted based on a few sentences of bio. The show is full of them. Ned Stark is a 1D character. He's a good heart that cares about duty, honor, loyalty, and family above all, and abhors pragmatic compromises. If you just know that about him, you can pretty much predict what he will do in every situation of the show. I know this sounds like a criticism but somehow I enjoyed the 1D characters. Arya, Jon, Rob, Joffrey, Tywin, Brienne, are all AMAZING characters that I very much enjoyed on screen -- but they can all be boiled down to a predictable pattern of behavior. Sansa is an early example of a multidimensional character, as is Tyrion.
- Littlefinger is a fucking idiot. He forgot the first rule of being a Machiavellian snake. Don't appear to others as a Machiavellian snake. I couldn't get over this. The guy talks like a 20-something who just read 48 Laws of Power. How he got as far as he did is beyond me. What Sansa ended up doing to him felt like it should've happened to him 100 times in his life already.
- The show shined most in King's Landing and concept of Succession. There are basically x kinds of plots in GoT after season 1. (i) the King's landing plot, which focuses on political intrigue. (ii) the travelling bands around the realm, usually buddy comedies (e.g. arya and the hound, jaime and brienne, etc). (iii) the north, which focuses on the war against lannisters, then iron islands, then boltons. (iv) the wall, which follows the beats of a fantasy story. And finally (v) the dany plot. Of these, by FAR I preferred KL and the lannisters. The scenes where the lannisters are just talking, to each other or non-lannisters, are the scenes I watched the show for. The Baratheon succession was also amazing, more could've been done between renly and stannis. The show lost something when the war of the 5 kings went cold.
- Bran's quest north of the wall. I didn't care about this one from A-Z. I cared even less about the boy and girl wheeling him around, don't even remember their names. Only time I sympathized with Bran was when he sent the girl away without so much as thank you.
- Dany plot post-viserys and pre-tyrion. Those are the only characters that made dany bearable. This might be an unpopular opinion, but I just didn't care about her adventures in essos, slavers bay, mereen and the sons of the harpy (whatever happened there), qarth, or whatever. I cared about the dragons and that's it.
- Arya's faceless god training. Just fuck this one. I shamelessly started to skip through it. It's so dark I can't see shit, but I don't think I would want to anyway.
- Dorne. Here's the thing. GoT absolutely nails the whole Medieval Christian Europe setting -- culture, ambiance, costume, etc. It's all the other races they do a shit job at. Dorne, the Dothraki, the free cities, these all feel like shallow stereotypes.
- Rob marrying the foreign girl, I don't know her name and I don't care. Stupid boy. I felt nothing when they stabbed her pregnant stomach to death.
