Firstly, sorry this is so long!Hi there,
My dad is going through an incredibly difficult time financially, and is currently living on food banks. He absolutely loves trying new food and I hate the thought of him, in his 60s, living on the basic staples he gets from the food bank to survive, instead of having nice meals to look forward to.
For Christmas this year, I’m thinking of making him a little hamper with a cookbook, and items that can be added to basic ingredients to make them nicer and fancier.
I’m thinking a collection of spices, a nice flavoured oil, some dried chillies, that sort of thing. Things that you can add to super basic ingredients to tart them up and make something fancy.
I think it’ll be a nice way for him to spend his time. He doesn’t know anything whatsoever about cooking, but he did used to enjoy it.
Basically, I’m just hoping that those who know about cooking could give me some suggestions of other (ideally non-perishable) things to include?
A couple of notes:
- I really hope this doesn’t read like I’m criticising food banks in the slightest - I’m so grateful for them and for the wonderful people who donate to them. It just, understandably, tends to be the cheapest and most basic items.
- I’d imagine some people reading this are wondering why I don’t just help him out with food. Unfortunately, I have a low and super irregular income atm, so I’m not often able to, but I help him out whenever I can.
- I’m looking for things he can keep in the cupboard for a long time and add to a variety of ingredients. Please don’t suggest things like fresh goods, breads etc that’ll perish quickly or just be good for one or two meals.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to make a turn-based RPG game, but I encounter so many issues with the logic of my current architecture and i'm questionning myself about so many things. In brief, i'm lost !
My fundamental question is, should I consider the units playing on the field as pawns guided and controlled only by something else ? In this scenario the pawns would only be some data containers, with basic functions (like move, attack, handle its own animation) but they would never know where they are, where is what, if it's their turn or not, etc. There would be another entity to determine everything instead, like a parent node who would control its children pawns to make them do things.
Or, should I get them more autonomy ? In this scenario they would know if it's their turn, they also could have a reference of the current tilemap so they would be able to know who is where, if they can move on a cell, etc. That also means that the AI logic would come from the enemy pawn directly. I am more comfortable with this option, but I feel like it's not what i'm supposed to do.
I'm trying as possible to make my scenes independant, but with this kind of game I tend to have a main scene with a lot of interactions between siblings nodes, instead of parent -> children communication. Everything needs the TileMap or the current fight data so I don't know how to organize my main scene.
If you have any advices it would be very helpful !
