2024.11.29 16:49 technoirlab Ideas and Ramblings on Photography (From Various Conversations)

Below are some ramblings of my journey, for what they're worth. Some ideas learned, stolen, or found from conversations with myself, and others (Reuben Radding, Matt Stuart, Daniel Arnold, to name a few recognizable ones). For the record, I'm not pompous enough to think any of the below should or will be taken serious. I merely like to write, and I hope you enjoy my thoughts. (NOTE: This post was copied from another I made here, which is not an attempt to share my photots - just for transparency of a cross post)
Anyways:
March 1, 2023 – this was the start of my expedition into the world of photography. Where I would ascend the ‘Sisyphusian’ mountain of failure, and, for the most part, be stationary.
Today, as I write this, marks (almost) 3 years I’ve been taking photos. An infant compared to others, but an obsessed boy with a camera, none-the-less. I’ve never entered into “hobbies” lightly – always shooting for the grand allure out of the gate – the best equipment (yes, I fell for this one early), the “best” books to read, the workshops, and the travelling to places littered with other photographers all trying to catch that moment together. But, as I sit here and ponder all I’ve learned the past year(s), I think the one idea that sticks out most is: we’re just taking photos. Still shots of time, that can never be duplicated 100%. The way the grass sits, the colours of the sky, the micro muscles aligning a stranger’s face in that seemingly vehement smirk. None of this can be replicated again by yourself or others. Sure, you can try, but in that one instance there is an infinite number of possibilities and they perfectly stood still for you, in the by-product of your decisive instant of aiming and pushing a button. So, no matter how “bad” the photo is to your standards – its still a one-of-one, non-duplicable stillness. Every pixel on your sensor will never possess the same data. The shape and tone of the film will never be processed the same. You’ve created a first edition. You’ve captured the world as it went by, and that moment is lost in time, aside from the stillness you’ve captured. It is the only living proof that a past exists, beside our intangible brain memories. And it was your vision. Your viewport.
And you can still get in your own way of taking that one-of-one photo. You can think “They might see me”, “they may confront me”, “maybe I’ll look stupid”, “maybe this won’t be a good photo”. Regardless of the excuse – you are the only person getting in your own way of success.
This is why I love photography.
It's a battle with your self. And when you push that button to snap the photo, regardless of the outcome, it is beautiful. Forget the rules; forget the bullshit people that think they know what they’re talking about spew (because no one knows shit). Don’t pay attention to the subjective nature of this artform. Because a photo you may think is horrendous, another person can resonate with. We each have an equally intricate life of an infinite number of possibilities. Similar to each and every photo you’ve taken, but times to the power infinity, too. That photo of a floorboard with a small scratch you took (that you discarded because it didn’t have “layers”, “depth”, or a “subject”) may make a person cry, thinking of their childhood – the scratches their dad’s work boots left on their foyer floor. Or, that photo of the girl with her back turned, hand pointing to nothing, may give someone a sense of foreboding as they are reminded of some obscure subconscious thought the body language expels to them. Whatever it may be, of whatever example, it is not to say that all your photos are “good” – but rather, that with enough snaps of the shutter, something will resonate with you too. And many photos you won’t even realize will resonate with others. It is a form of unannounced communication with each other. A trade off of emotion and feeling, through imagery.
So, should my collection of one-of-ones be a compilation of resonations with myself, or others, or both? I think that’s the journey. A self reflection. Appeasing others. Appeasing everyone. Seeing where the expedition further takes me is the goal, while still using a ripped and clouded map to get there. And I’ll make mistakes. New photos will sometimes not be as “good” as old ones. This does not mean a stunt of growth – it may just mean this new one resonated with me, or you, or them. Or maybe you’re tapping into something new and unique. Why not see where it takes you, and add some new terrain to that ripped and cloudy map, so designed by other’s and their opinions and direction.
Regardless of the direction, misdirection, or roadblock I find myself in, I remind myself: it’s just a photo. One of infinite possibilities, infinite emotions, countless resonations, and a reflection that we exist. So press the button. Take the shot.
This is why I love photography.
