one of my professors made a comment on one of my papers where i talked about pluralisation in hindustani where I had transcribed the word for boy as 'laRkaa'
this was the comment: "Out of curiosity, why have you capitalized R here? (We would typically do this to indicate an archiphoneme, and your inclusion of the archiphoneme here would indeed be accurate, but this is a concept I don't expect you to know.)"
we were not taught this in class and i didnt know what an archiphoneme was till i looked it up, and im still not sure what it is.

December is ahead, and it seems that the New Year vacations - the holiday of joy and light - are just around the corner. Waiting for the New Year and Christmas is always an anticipation of miracles, gifts, good changes.... Stores before the holiday are full of merry bustle, relatives and friends will come to visit, congratulate, treat the most delicious dishes. And in the midst of this fun, the Church year after year tells us that the time before Christmas is not for festivities and fun, but.... for fasting. Why? Why on the eve of such a joyful holiday to exhaust ourselves with abstinence? For what is it done? Over the centuries, the Church has developed a very interesting practice - the most important days of the church calendar are preceded by fasting in one way or another. Christmas is no exception - this holiday is preceded by a forty-day period, which in Orthodoxy begins on November 28 and ends on Christmas Eve. In Catholicism the date of the beginning of the fast (in the West it is called Advent) moves between November 27 and December 3, but it also ends with Christmas Eve. What is the Church trying to tell us by setting the whole forty Lenten days before Christmas? Lent (including Christmas) is a multifaceted concept. On the one hand, it is a time of increased attention to one's inner world, a time of correction and purification, a time of what in Christianity is called repentance. On the other hand, it is a period of preparation for something very important. In the Bible we can find many examples of how people prepared for crucial and decisive events in their lives through self-restraint in food and fun, through special attention to prayer. Finally, the third aspect of fasting is sacrifice to God. It can take many forms. For example, to limit ourselves in entertainment, to be active in charity, to help those who need our help. In other words, sacrifice implies that we disadvantage ourselves in something, and the freed up resources are directed not to satisfy our needs, but to give them to God and other people. The Christmas fast is very ancient. It dates back to the first centuries of Christianity - it was known already in the beginning of the IV century. It used to be called Philip's fast, because it began on the day of remembrance of the Apostle Philip (November 28, New Style). Sometimes it seems to us that joy and fasting are incompatible. But it is not so. On the contrary, when a person begins to scrutinize his inner world, his soul becomes brighter and his life becomes more meaningful. Overcoming our big and small passions, we experience the joy of victory over them. Not to be rude in transportation, to forgive someone who has offended us, to keep silent if we are provoked to quarrel - do we not experience joy at the moment when we overcome ourselves? During fasting a person is called to change qualitatively. If we do not eat meat, but do not fight with our passions, then fasting will turn into a mere diet. The benefit for the soul will be zero. The joy of Christmas and the fast that leads to it is the joy of meeting Christ. Christmas reveals one of the most important truths of Christianity - the truth that God, the Creator of the universe, became one of us for the sake of man's salvation. For the sake of defeating death, He came into our world. What many generations of people dreamed of was finally accomplished in the cave of Bethlehem. Christmas Lent, Philip's Lent, Advent - whatever the name of the period before Christmas, it prepares us to receive a very important truth - the good news of the Incarnation of God. And if this had not happened, if Christmas had been the birth of a mere man or a beautiful legend, there would have been no Resurrection, no victory over death, and no Church as the Body of Christ. Finally, and most importantly, if there had been no Christmas, there would have been no salvation! It was not only accomplished on Calvary or in the Garden of Gethsemane. The work of our salvation from death had already begun when Christ was born in a miserable cave on the outskirts of Bethlehem. And it is to Him that man goes throughout the entire Christmas Lent. We were both in the army. Technically I still am for one more month but it will be over for me too. Just a small recap.. we met at the military academy. Our time there was darkness. It was as if we were slaves. We could just quit but we didn't. Like we got so deep into those invisible chains that we forgot that we could set ourselves free.
We were room mates back then. We were supporting each other. We fell in love. Our love was absolutely secret. When we graduated, it was not illegal to be together but we would still hide it, it would be safer. We had our own homophobia to deal with, who's the manliest of the two.
Some things happened lately and he just announced me that he will quit. He said that he believes I'm a ver good military officer, but we're fighting on the wrong side. He made me think of it a lot and I agree. I have my own values and morals and I was under the false impression that being in the army was in accordance with those.
Now he's making bread and biscuits. In the army he was responsible for food supplies. He really makes wonderful biscuits. He always did.
As for me? I was responsible for self defense. I will stick with that.
I just feel that we tormented ourseles for so long. I just hope that we will be able to live our lives like a gay couple that's free.

I en föregående diskussion på reddit skrivade jag om mina upplevelser i Stockholm och Göteborg och att hur jag kände att folk där ville inte ens prata svenska med mig. (Jag är en finländare som kan ok svenska). Många sade att jag skulle besöka mindre städer istället. Nästa året har jag planerat att försöka några småstäder, vilka rekommenderar ni? Jag menar inte små byar utan småstäder där det finns åtminstone en hotel och restaurang samt kanske sköna, gamla byggnader att se och något interessant i deras historia, och naturligtvist när jag kunde öva min svenska med folket därinne.

I (M26) have had a great SWE job for the past two years as a full stack web developer. However, during this time, I haven't done any homework to learn new skills/technologies. I am worried that in the long run, this will hurt me severely. There are a few subjects I would like to learn more about, but after a full day's work, I just don't have the motivation to read a textbook. Does anyone have advice on how to stay motivated to learn more after work? Any insights on how important this actually is? If it's just a matter of discipline, then any advice on maintaining discipline when you're already in a comfortable place? Any anecdotes of similar feelings and what you did about them?

Bit of a vent/warning to UK based Redditors
So I was in a car accident on Tuesday. No fault claim with dash cam footage to show other car came into my lane
However what happened over the next few hours and days has been a horror story.
So I was mentally a bit shaken immediately after the accident, on my drive to work an idiot just hits my car out of nowhere. I call my insurance, file the claim, start preparing the dash cam footage and photos of damage.
My insurer (Hastings) tells me how they will pass my details to other companies, such as Enterprise for the car replacement, some garages for repairs etc.
Somehow, it seems my details have been leaked to fraudulent companies. I got so many calls in the space of 5-6 hours that I went into autopilot, answering questions they asked, giving descriptions of the accident etc. I assumed that because they knew my phone number and name that they had been delegated by Hastings.
Two of these callers asked for my national insurance. Despite being mentally exhausted and overwhelmed with the bombardment of phone calls, this made me suspicious and I asked why they needed my NI number. The guy replied very calmly yeah no worries, it’s just so we can check your claims history to make sure you haven’t made claims with other insurers before. Which typing it now sounds stupid, but at the time, given all the factors such as how he knew my name, he seemed legit.
So that’s how I gave away my NI number to scammers - they somehow knew of my accident and the companies involved within hours, and impersonated them to steal confidential info. No idea how they had my details to begin with.
Then I received a phone call from Enterprise (legitimate enterprise) who informed me of the process to hire a replacement vehicle. Half an hour after this call, I get a message from Enterprise (the name of the sender was ENTERPRISE, no phone number visible). It asks me to upload photos of the car from all angles, the VIN number and then my drivers license. Given I had just been on the phone with Enterprise, and they called me by my name in the text, I assumed that again this was legit. So now I’ve also lost my driving license to fraudsters
Guys if you are ever unlucky enough to be involved with insurance if any kind - NEVER give out your National Insurance, photos of ID and definitely not bank info. This sounds obvious when you are calm, but immediately after an incident you may be more vulnerable mentally given your faith in your insurer - I am normally very careful, but this made me realise just how evil scammers can be.
I hope this post may help even one person avoid sharing their confidential info with scammers. If anybody has advice on what to do given the loss of my NI and drivers license numbers, would be appreciated
