2024.11.29 21:32 jackandjillonthehill Thoughts on streaming landscape?
Thought I’d post my thoughts on the various players in streaming and see if I can get some feedback on the industry as a whole or any thoughts about the individual players.
Netflix seems to be an obvious winner, with the largest user base, hit shows that can scale across a global user base, and solid margins. The high profitability and large scale allow a content flywheel to progress - more users-> more expensive content -> more users. I do think Reed Hastings was an incredible CEO and his influence on the company culture is still present today. I would probably be interested if the multiple ever got down into the 20’s range.
A similar dynamic might be playing out with Amazon, though it’s anyone’s guess what the profitability of Prime Video is, they certainly can fork out for expensive content and may be helping the long term stickiness of the Prime service.
Seems like this whole sub was pretty burned on WBD in the past couple of years but seems like the company might actually be making a turnaround. Has had a series of pretty good and successful HBO shows which might drive more subscribers. Content spend is ramping up which is suppressing FCF but it seems appropriate to me to invest in content right now to keep people on the platform. Has been generating above $5 billion in FCF but given the latest FCF direction I wouldn’t necessarily bet on more than $3 billion longer term so the current price with about an 8x multiple on $3 billion seems about right to me.
Seems like the PARA deal might finally go through but not be that beneficial for class B shareholder. Seems like there might be a bit of an arb opportunity from the current price to the proposed $15 buyout.
DIS is a bit difficult to disentangle from the parks business but it seems like they are getting closer to making the streaming business consistently profitable. They have suffered from high churn since launch but the bundle with Hulu and ESPN is reducing churn. As a consumer I find the bundle to be a pretty good value. If they can control churn and consumers continue to find it to be good value, they could probably increase price in incoming years and expand margin. I think it was a pretty good value around $80-90, with a forward multiple of 20x my estimate of forward earnings but not all that interesting here until they show they can execute a bit more.
I’m still not sure how to think about Apple TV+ as an entrant in the business. Would be curious if anyone has thoughts on this.
The shift of the streaming business from subscription to partially or fully ad-supported has benefitted the ad platform side of the business.
Trade Desk (TTD) has been the obvious winner, and is probably extending its lead in CTV advertising. They are now attacking Roku directly on the operating system for TVs after forcing Roku into a partnership on ad spending. The multiple is high but there’s a lot of growth costs in the operating expenses and the growth rate has been consistently 20%+ on the top-line. It’s expensive and always has been expensive but it seems like its competitive position keeps getting better. The internet ads business is likely to get better if GOOG is broken up as well.
Roku is kind of a mystery to me, they have been in a dominant position among operating systems and have maintained that share for many years now. Their pitch has always been they will dominate the operating system and take a cut of ad spend. They also wanted to be a bundler of streaming subscription payments. But a lot of the sales of ads several years ago was selling ads for other streaming services (media and entertainment ad spend). This has dried up as all the streaming services have tried to rein in costs. The company has managed to cut costs while accelerating growth but it’s been forced to share its ad revenues with Trade Desk and now Trade Desk is attacking its core business. If they can maintain their market position and keep growing international they can get some scale and margins should expand to profitability and beyond but I’m not too sure with this new competitive threat.
Curious for everyone’s thoughts on the various businesses and the streaming landscape.

I feel like throwing up whenever family cooks animals... I try not to judge and make it look cool to be vegan.
I guess in a sense I'd have to transform myself into a cooler person for people to like me more and feel inspired to do what I do...
Maybe we vegans just have to be cooler and more loveable somehow!
