 | College Station's Sunken Speedway Back up north we go, to an old track washed away to time deep in the heart of Texas: the Texas World Speedway. everything's bigger in texas: the tracks, the sunlight, and the housing developments that eat up the tracks Overview and History Built as a twin of the Michigan International Speedway, the Texas World Speedway opened to the public in November 1969. Only 4 months removed from the Apollo 11 mission led from nearby Houston, the town of College Station became the new home of (at the time) one of only 7 oval racetracks in the United States with a length of 2 miles or longer. There were more than just 2 miles of racetrack there, however; the facility had multiple layouts for an infield road course and a smaller oval inside the big one. The longest road course layout measured 2.9 miles in length, and went underneath the backstretch, perhaps a precursor to Twin Ring Motegi in Japan. you could have told me this is how Michigan looked 50 years ago and I would have believed you completely Just how much of a copycat was TWS to Michigan? It was actually steeper than MIS, with the Brooklyn speedway having 18 degree banks in the turns compared to Texas World’s 22 degree banks, bringing it more on par with the turns of Atlanta and Charlotte. The frontstretch of Texas World was banked at 12 degrees, steeper than the turns at Indianapolis, and the same as Michigan’s. The track hosted NASCAR from 1969-1973, and again from 1979 to 1981. The 1971 race served as the season finale which Richard Petty won as the end cap to his 3rd title, and his last with full factory support from Chrysler; the next season saw the start of an iconic partnership between the Pettys and STP, returning to College Station at the end of ‘72 as a champion and winner again, this time lapping the entire field. Along with NASCAR, USAC and IMSA had some major visits here over the years. how envious I am of the people that were able to attend races here Did You Know? - In 1974, Willie Nelson’s 4th of July Picnic was held at the Texas World Speedway, featuring performances from the likes of Jimmy Buffet and Kinky Friendman among others and Willie. The event is remembered for a massive fire that burned a bunch of cars, including Robert Earl Keen’s who used that as the cover of his album Picnic. - Texas World Speedway is immortalized in Need for Speed: Prostreet (2007) as a playable track. - In 1993, Jeff Andretti made his return to driving in style by setting the unofficial closed-course record in an IndyCar at TWS, clocking a lap at 234.5 MPH while testing for that year’s Indianapolis 500. Not bad for having recovered from multiple leg injuries across both extremities at high speed. Funnily enough, the Lola he drove that day was prepared by Pagan Racing out of nearby Corpus Christi (the birthplace of the Labonte brothers). - In 2009, Greg Biffle and Roush Fenway Racing evaded NASCAR’s testing ban by making a trip to College Station and reached a top speed of around 218 MPH around the track, the fastest ever achieved in a stock car, with the full lap clocking in at 195 MPH. Hey, if you’re gonna break the rules, might as well break records along the way. (from 2016) the track still looked somewhat passable as a testing site By the time the 1980s rolled around, the track had fallen into disrepair and in poor condition. Then again, it had always played the part of the poor brother of the superspeedway denomination from its inception in the late 60s, often failing to keep up with amenities at the track and the like. The Cup Series date was moved to big brother Pocono in 1981, the same year ESPN began broadcasting live NASCAR races on television for the entire country to watch. It was also the same year that the Texas World Speedway hosted its last professional race. Life After Racing Despite losing NASCAR as its biggest draw, the track still somehow persisted well into the 21st century being the home of racing schools and the like. In fact, many drivers in its later years described the road course as a driver’s track, proving its viability to continue as a racing facility; it wasn’t enough. In 2017, the track officially shut down and was turned into a carpark of sorts for vehicles damaged by Hurricane Harvey. Once the floods cleared, the track was gradually torn apart piece by piece in the following years to make way for housing (probably for people that complain about the noise of racetracks after moving next to one, among other nonsensical things). Had Texas World Speedway’s date not been moved to Pocono, it’s entirely possible that it could have lasted through the decade on the Winston Cup schedule just off of the TV revenue alone. Alas, the last remaining remnants of the speedway is the general outline of the track and the racing-adjacent street names condescendingly named after the track’s closure as a “tribute” to the former speedway. 2024.11.29 21:36 rdcpro CableCard clock Epoch rollover
My CableCard for comcast/xfinity stopped working yesterday in the middle of a football game, but the card still functions. However the pairing screen (the one with the provisioning info from the cable company) is blank.
After a lot of digging and a useless call to Xfinity, it appears they have not been totally forthcoming with us when they say the CableCard will work but they can't help you if it breaks. If you have a CableCard based on the old Conditional Access technology developed by Scientific-Atlanta (aka PowerKEY), the clock Epoch just rolled over and the card can no longer decrypt the stream. It's not broken, it just thinks the date is in the past.
They've known about this for years, and solutions have been developed to fix this, but evidently Comcast/Xfinity has found a way to get rid of all their CableCard customers at one time.
We pay $270 per month for bundled voice cable and internet. It's hard to understand why Comcast/Xfinity would simply say "see ya".

As far as I remember, I never interacted with this token. Can I still import it safely? There's nothing left in this wallet apart from this imported token, so I guess the risk is limited, isn't it?
