2024.11.30 00:00 Medium_Medium Potential Escape PHEV buyer with some questions
Hey All,
I'm looking to replace my 2014 hybrid fusion, and I'm heavily considering the Escape PHEV. I've been browsing this subreddit a bit, and went for a test drive today. It left me with some questions though.
I tried to use EV Now mode, but the computer told me that it might not be available based on engine needs. Afterwards the button for EV Now/EV Later remained greyed out the rest of the drive. The thing is, it was maybe 25-30 degrees F during the test drive, so I could maybe understand needing to have the ICE running due to temperature. I was able to get the Escape to run on EV only occasionally (when maintaining speed around 45 mph or when very slowly accelerating from a stop), but not really any more than I can get from my regular hybrid.
I've seen a lot of folks on here talk about being about to do most of their driving on EV only. I guess I'm wondering:
Folks who drive in colder climates, is there a temperature below which you just expect the ICE to usually be running? If you're doing a 10-15 mile drive in a Midwestern winter, do you except to be able to do it by EV?
Do you feel like you need to drive very gently in order to use EV Now mode, even in good weather? I'm not expecting to be able to slam on the gas or drive like a sports car, but will it stay in EV only even getting onto the freeway?
Basically, my daily commute is only 10 miles each way but 8 miles of that is freeway. If I go with the PHEV I'd want to know that I'll be able to do that commute most of the year, mostly on EV only. I don't care too much if I can't do it in the winter, but the test drive has me worried that the ICE is going to kick on a lot unless I'm driving super conservatively. Just hoping for a guy check on whether my experience might have been more weather related.
