2024.11.30 02:29 Occulto Filter turned green after cleaning.
My wife was just cleaning our split system filters, using Simple Green Air Conditioner cleaner.
When she pulled the filters out to clean them, they were tinted green. Whatever it was came off really easily, and now the filters are clear. (As an aside, it's been the worst thing to research, because every result is coming up with either Simple Green or environmentally friendly filters - not the colour green.)
Just wondering what a likely culprit would be?
We're in Australia heading into summer, and the pollen count has been stupidly high recently. Would that explain it? Or should we be more concerned?

Background 3 ish years of high school/ college Spanish. Got a good grasp on the basic grammar structure of the language, but was frustrated with the traditional learning methods of testing and memorization. Started DS over a year ago, with some pretty significant breaks between 50 and 150 hours. Slow progress is better than no progress :)
150 Hours Review Learning a language with CI is like learning how to ride a bike. Once it becomes easy, I forget how difficult the task was at the beginning, until I see someone else just starting out. Sometimes I watch a video with my dad, who knows a tiny bit of Spanish, and I'm often surprised when he struggles to understand it, because from my point of view the words are so obvious. This is why I love the CI format, because it feels natural and like I am developing a feeling for the language instead of a "Spanish copy" of English.
Over last 50 hours or so I've been paying careful attention to how different types of content requires varying focus levels. As of right now, here's how much attention I can pay to different content types while maintaining 95% comprehension.
Low Attention - Can comprehend while doing another activity like driving or crafts

- Super beginner DS videos

- Easier Beginner videos
- Comprehensible Spanish Listening Podcast
- Medium/hard Beginner Videos

I just finished all of Chill Spanish Listening Practice and most of Cuéntame. I still replay CSLP often as a warmup for the day, and when I am not counting hours (for example driving the grocery store). I just started listening to Comprehensible Spanish, and honestly it's a bit advanced for me. I will probably go back and listen to it again in another 100 hours. Currently I'm looking for suggestions for something in between the two difficulty levels.
Positives I really like this method of learning, and I am very happy to be at level 3! I started doing crosstalk a week ago with someone from Conversation Exchange. This has been a bit intimidating, but I understand a lot more than I expected. I asked him to speaking naturally but a bit slower than his usual speech, and that helped a lot. I will probably continue to send him voice messages in English and listen to his Spanish ones.
Also, I am really excited to start the intermediate level videos on DS. I will still go back and watch the beginner ones for warmup, but this next level has so much more interesting content.
Frustrations It's just so many hours. I want my comprehension to be high, but at this level I need to reserve specific time in my day to sit down and focus on the videos or a podcast. Spanish is not ingrained in my brain enough to listen to most content while I am doing another activity, which makes my progress slow. I am going to grad school next year, which will likely make my time-crunch worse.
I am a bit dubious about the zero grammar aspect most CI-focused programs preach. I think most of the little pieces will definitely come with more hours (por vs para), but the subtleties of less-frequently used grammar seems like it will take forever if I took a "purist" approach. I've started reviewing what the subjunctive, preterite and imperfect sound like on a basic level. No memorization of stems, but knowing how they function has already been helpful.
Goals Keep listening, I guess! People often say here that this is a longterm approach to learning a language, and I have to keep reminding myself of that fact. I am currently sitting at about 1hday, which would put me at level 4 in May. Down-the-road goals are reading Don Quixote, watching native-level Spanish movies, and being able to fluidly talk in Spanish to clients when I get my MSW in 2027.
