Hi everyone!
My parents' MacBook (2017 13" MacBook Pro (non-touchbar) A1708) took a crap recently. I have gone down every possible path I can imagine to try and fix the thing. Basically, it boots into a Kernel Panic and gets into a loop with that for a while, and will eventually boot to a folder with a question mark after about 10 minutes.
I have reset the SMC, reset NVRAM, tried to boot in safe mode, tried to run Apple Diagnostics, and more. Apple Diagnostics freezes without a progress bar even popping up and stays frozen, even after several hours. It also won't boot into the built-in recovery mode. It goes to the internet recovery, loads for about 10 minutes total and reboots a few times, then eventually boots to the folder with a question mark again.
I then created a bootable installer with the macOS Ventura installer. After holding the option key, the startup manager came up with 2 options, the bootable USB installer, and the original SSD "Mac HD." I booted to the USB and after about 5-10 minutes it booted to Recovery mode. In Disk Utility, the installed SSD does not show up, even after clicking View>Show All Devices. If I click Reinstall macOS, the installed drive doesn't show up as a location to install, and the bootable installer shows up, but is greyed out. Next, I will try to boot it in target disk mode with another Mac and see if I can access the drive through Disk Utility on the other Mac.
With all of these symptoms considered, I am thinking that the SSD has failed. I will likely suggest my parents buy a new MacBook or iPad for their light use. However, I have looked into options like purchasing an OEM drive to replace it, a third-party drive like from OWC, or an adapter from the proprietary A1708 socket to a 2230/2242 M.2 NVMe SSD paired with a drive of that form factor.
What suggestions do you have for things to try to get it working as is? If the original drive is toast, what suggestions do you have for repair? At the very least, life will be easier if I can access the drive data and move it to a new computer or backup drive. The important data is on an old computer as well, but getting it from this drive would be simpler.

with no periods of stability or periods where they return to baseline. I can't find anything online about this and i was wondering if anyone else had heard this claim and if they had the source. as i get older and older it feels like i am always a little elevated, hypomanic, manic, slightly depressed or severely depressed and nothing in-between. one of my psychiatrists did say once he thought my baseline was a notch below other peoples baselines and that my baseline just is a little depressed so maybe i just have an out of wack baseline. anyway any help would be appreciated.

2024.11.30 06:50 space_wiener Easiest Method to Renew Certs (I Promise I’m Not Lazy)
Normally I wouldn’t do this as I think people should slow down and actually learn the material. But in this case I got Sec+ and Linux+ to which my boss didn’t care whatsoever. The position I’m in doesn’t need these certs and I don’t really need the info (other than cyber security fundamentals and some Linux but I know that stuff).
So anyway I don’t need to really know the material I just don’t want them to lapse until I actually need them. Lately I work way too much to spend hours a day studying the material like if I was originally doing them.
I’ve never had to renew certs and have read a bit back when I first go the certs but not sure what has changed over the last few years.
