So uncomfortable seeing a sea of blank expressions to someone showing a video they think is funny multiple times in one sitting. If that happens once at a house party, I'm leaving the room.

2024.12.01 01:41 Talaio__ My Life Between Bullets and Mountains: My Autobiography

My name is Alejandro García, and I was born in 1980 in a tiny, forgotten village in the lush hills of Asturias, Spain. San Pedro del Monte, my home, was a place as beautiful as it was isolating. Nestled between towering mountains and rolling green valleys, the village was a world unto itself. Life moved slowly there, dictated by the changing seasons and the rhythms of nature. We had no luxury, no convenience—only what we could make with our hands and what the land offered us.
I was born into a family of ten children—six brothers and three sisters. My father, Eusebio, was a man trapped by his demons. A miner by trade, he became consumed by gambling and alcohol, vices that eroded not just our finances but the very foundation of our family. My mother, María, was the heart and soul of our home. She was a strong, resourceful woman, but in those times, societal norms were unforgiving. Women like her were expected to stay home, no matter how dire the circumstances.
My earliest memories are of cold winters where my siblings and I huddled together for warmth, and summers spent helping my mother collect wild herbs to sell at the market. As the eldest son, I felt an unspoken responsibility to shield my siblings from the harsher realities of our life. At the age of eight, I began taking odd jobs around the village—herding sheep, harvesting crops, and even chopping wood for our neighbors. These early experiences taught me resilience and discipline, qualities that would define my life in ways I could never have imagined at the time.
By the time I turned 18, I was desperate for a way out. The military offered me an escape, a purpose, and a chance to support my family. In 1998, I enlisted in the Spanish Army and was assigned to the Brigada de Infantería Ligera “Galicia” VII. Leaving San Pedro del Monte was bittersweet. I remember my mother standing at the edge of our dirt road, waving as the bus carried me away. It was the first time I had ever left Asturias.
My first posting was to Kosovo, part of the NATO-led KFOR mission. Kosovo was a land scarred by war, its people caught in the aftermath of ethnic conflict. My initial days there were a baptism by fire. I quickly learned that the textbooks and training exercises could never prepare you for the reality of war. The air was thick with tension, and every day brought new challenges.
One memory stands out vividly. It was January, and the bitter cold cut through even our thickest gear. Our patrol stumbled upon a family—parents and two young children—sheltering in the ruins of a bombed-out church. They were starving and had no warm clothing. We gave them our rations, blankets, and whatever else we could spare. Seeing their gratitude was a humbling reminder of why we were there.
In 2003, I was deployed to Iraq as part of the Brigada Plus Ultra, Spain’s contribution to the coalition forces. The desert was a world apart from the green mountains of Asturias. The heat was relentless, and the threat of IEDs (improvised explosive devices) loomed over every mission.
One of the most harrowing experiences of my life occurred during a convoy operation near Diwaniya. Our vehicles were ambushed by insurgents who had planted IEDs along the road. The explosion was deafening, and the chaos that followed was like nothing I had ever experienced. One of my closest comrades, Corporal López, was severely injured. Despite the danger, we managed to secure the area and evacuate him. He survived, but the incident left an indelible mark on all of us.
Our mission in Iraq wasn’t just about combat. We were tasked with rebuilding infrastructure and fostering stability. I took part in the protection of a hospital under construction. Insurgents repeatedly attempted to sabotage the project, but we stood our ground. When the hospital finally opened its doors, the sight of doctors treating patients made every sleepless night worthwhile.
In 2005, I was sent to Afghanistan, where I was promoted to sergeant. Afghanistan was unlike any other place I had served. The terrain was unforgiving, and the enemy was elusive. Our base was situated in a remote area, surrounded by towering mountains that reminded me of home.
During a reconnaissance mission in a narrow canyon, my unit was ambushed. We were pinned down for hours, with no immediate support available. It was a test of leadership I hadn’t anticipated. I had to keep my men calm and coordinate our defense while waiting for air support. When the helicopters finally arrived, the sense of relief was overwhelming.
Afghanistan wasn’t just about firefights. We also worked on winning the hearts and minds of the local population. I’ll never forget the day we delivered school supplies to a village. The children’s smiles were a stark contrast to the hardship that surrounded them.
In 2011, I was deployed to Lebanon as part of the United Nations Interim Force. This mission was less about combat and more about peacekeeping. Our job was to monitor ceasefires and mediate disputes between local communities.
One particularly tense situation involved two villages fighting over access to a water source. After weeks of negotiations, we brokered an agreement that allowed both communities to share the resource. Watching former adversaries work together was one of the most rewarding moments of my career.
In 2020, after 24 years of service, I retired with the rank of subteniente. The decision wasn’t easy, but I knew it was time to focus on my family and my own dreams.
Today, I work as a talent scout in the private security sector. My role is to help veterans transition to civilian careers, drawing on my own experiences to guide them. It’s deeply fulfilling to see former soldiers thrive in new environments.
I’ve also rekindled my passion for precision shooting. While I no longer compete professionally, I still spend hours at the range, honing my skills. Shooting has become a form of meditation for me—a way to channel focus and discipline.
Recently, I achieved a lifelong dream: I paid off the mortgage on a small ranch near Oviedo. The property is modest but perfect. I’m now saving up to buy a horse and a few piglets to raise. There’s something deeply satisfying about returning to the land, reconnecting with nature, and building something with your own hands.
As I look back on my life, I see a journey shaped by struggle, sacrifice, and resilience. From the humble beginnings in San Pedro del Monte to the battlefields of Kosovo, Iraq, and Afghanistan, every step has taught me something valuable.
I’ve learned that leadership isn’t about giving orders; it’s about earning trust. I’ve learned that true strength lies in perseverance, and that even in the darkest moments, there’s always a glimmer of hope.
My story is far from over. Whether I’m mentoring young veterans, perfecting my aim at the shooting range, or tending to my ranch, I know that life still has many lessons to offer. And for that, I am grateful.

2024.12.01 01:41 SeaSaltAalinya Siren Thesis. Part 19.2- The debriefing

This Series is sister to "Steel Valkyries", which technically takes place before the events of "Siren Thesis", all within a cluster of branches where the Sirens have decided to undertake inland incursions.
Summary:
The debriefing on the Operation to take down the Siren ambush has seemingly been taken over by Akagi, which apparently has many things to explain and share to everyone else, whether they are prepare or not for it. Her explanations have taken everyone by surprise as well as the powers she seems to have gained during their mission, but things seem to only get more complicated once they try and make sense of the peculiar items they brought from within the Siren copied-vessels.
////
Chapter 2: Small Crimson Echoes Everyone stared dumbfounded at the spiritual companion that Akagi had summoned for her sister, incredulous of what they had just witnessed. While some were trying to look at it by getting close, others preferred to remain on their seats and chew as best as possible what Akagi had just mentioned. It didn't hurt at all that Helena had moved in close enough with the digital camera, that everyone was able to see the shikigami-meowfficer, Aoki on the big screen, without having to move from their seats.
“Is… is that what had you concerned?” The commander asked Warspite who was sitting beside him.
“That we should call for a higher power for assistance?” Warspite answered with a dry laugh.
“Yeah, more or less. Thing is, Commander, most of us that witnessed this are far more militaristic than we would like to admit.”
There was some sort of grumble of agreement at her words from the other girls sitting on the table at the stage. Only interrupted by Z-16.
“I mean, I suppose mutter is religious, she just devotes her time to have the old chants and choirs performed to perfection, so it is easy to forget that some of those are done with a religious intent.” The Iron blood destroyer said to herself, yet loud enough that everyone in the table heard it.
“Yeah, the Sunday choir is really good.” U-37 added.
“Well… we had our misgivings, we preferred to present this to the leaders and some of the more devoted, or spiritually aligned, and have them see if it makes sense to them.”
“As for why there are so many Sakurans. Well, this instance concerns them the most. It would be downright foolish to not have as many knowledgeable eyes on the matter.” Warspite said, her eyes still fixated on the Sakuran table where something else seemed to be happening.

“You Shouldn’t have simply made him into a guardian spirit! You had no right to it!” Fusou said with a candor that was unusual from her, she had stood up and was now next to Akagi.
“Fusou-san, your devotion to the souls of the sons and daughters of the Sakuran Isles is commendable. But you already know the meaning of the Sacred Tree sharing its powers with me, as well as this attire I wear now, it has made me into one of its divine messengers, showing me what must be done.” Akagi said, her pleased smile never faltering, without taking her eyes away from the meowficer on the table.
Akagi turned her head and looked at the Dog tags on the table, then she faced Fusou who had been standing next with evident distrust regardless of Akagi’s words.
“Truth be told, that was the reason why the Sacred tree requested for you two to be here.” Akagi said as she signaled at the dog tags on the table. “Take these. You will either find them rest and deliver them back within the realm of the Sacred tree and the Kami”
“Or, If they so desire. If these souls of Sakuran warriors request of you, you will find them a companion to assist so they can join them as warring partners
“If you still doubt me so, I would suggest praying to the Sacred Tree or the Kami. You will find them much more responsive from now on, they will lead these souls as well as you, on what shall be done, whichever path they decide to take.”
“Although, they were -my- pilots. I am rather confident of the choice they will take.” Akagi said without a shred of fake humility.
Fusou came to a complete halt at that. Staring at a Akagi and then looking at the dog tags on the table, she looked at her younger Sister Yamashiro, who in response to something unspoken between the two of them nodded minutely and made her way to grab the silk handkerchief that held the dog tags of the fallen Sakuran soldiers.
Yamashiro neatly folded the silk cloth and with almost ritualistic moves made her way to her sister and offered the folded cloth.
“We will see that this endeavor is fulfilled, to the satisfaction of the Sacred Tree’s will.” Fusou stated solemnly.
She said nothing else to Akagi, and both her and Yamashiro simply moved back to their seats.

“And I would suggest the same for everyone else” Akagi said as she looked at the rest of the room.
“The sirens have meddled into domains which should have been beyond their reach, they have stirred even the Sacred Tree into action. It has shown me that we shall find a much more active assistance on the spirits of the Sakuran Empire from now on. I find it dubious that the Sacred Tree might be the only greater spirit who will lend its assistance to.”
She stated, with an air of finality, her attention turning back to the table, ignoring the commotion she had created among the other Kansen. At their table Yuubari had now joined, grabbing one of the twisted pieces of metal on the table, ignoring the murmur and mumbling that was occurring between the people from the other factions.
“Akagi-san, what about these?” Yuubari asked Akagi, pointing at the slabs of metal on the table.
“That I don’t know, these pieces of metal feel familiar and powerful, but the Sacred Tree didn’t show me anything regarding them.”
“eh? Familiar, how?” The kitsune asked without taking her eyes off the piece of twisted metal.
“Well… both felt… nostalgic” Akagi said as her fox ears began flicking as she focused on what had been asked “like the feeling of nostalgia of that moment when you smell blossoming flowers at Mikasa-senpai’s house.”
“That’s… a rather specific memory” Yuubari said, looking perplexed by the response.
“That’s interesting.” Amagi said, taking advantage that both Yuubari and Akagi had suddenly gone quiet and into deep thought “I don’t think we have gone to Mikasa-san’s house in quite some time.”
“What about the other piece of metal?” Yuubari asked, pointing at the other slab that stood in a similarly misshapen state.
“Reminds me of the memory of the smell of Mikasa-senpai’s dusty books,” Akagi stated.
This made more than a couple eyebrows go up in response. With more than one person tilting their head, more specifically Fusou and Yamashiro which resembled confused felines.
Everyone was still pondering while Amagi herself reached and grabbed one of the pieces of metal, closing her eyes as she seemingly focused on it, her fox ears twitching every now and then as everyone stared at her, until the moment she opened her eyes and placed the metal in front of her and grabbed the other slab, focusing on it as in the same manner in which she had done so before, with everyone at the auditorium either waiting in silence to her response or still conversing about the previous point that Akagi had brought into discussion.
“Akagi has the right to it.” Amagi said as she put the second piece of metal in front of her next to the first.
“You said each of these was within the Siren device, which powered the copied vessels, right?”
“Yes, Amagi Onē-sama. It is as you said.” Akagi replied, bowing her head in agreement towards her sister
“I believe these are shards from our ‘former bodies’. Remnants of ‘the Akagi’ and ‘the Amagi’ of the original Sakuran Imperial navy.” Amagi said solemnly.
“If these white cubes react with human souls, perhaps the device they were trapped in was imitating our vessels with a piece from them.”
“Oh! It must be as you said, Amagi Onē-sama!”
“May I inquire what has led to such a deduction, Amagi-san?” Yuubari said.
“For starters, the fact that these seemed to be an important part of the device that powered the vessels which in turn had the same shape as ours. The sense of nostalgia from Mikasa’s books. Akagi has never been too keen on those, unlike me, which in turn leads me to believe one is more attuned to Akagi and the other to me somehow, specially given that each one was found on the replica of our vessels.”
The kitsune closed her eyes as she recounted each one of the points she had reached on her analysis.
“There are certainly a lot of holes in this theory, but given what little information we have, it is the most reasonable conclusion until we get more information.”
“Then it must be so. We shall devise a plan on how to make the best use of these -artifacts-.”
“Akagi, please.” Amagi looking at her younger sister “We shouldn’t jump to conclusions, I am certain our research teams will be able to bring light to this matter, without the need for my inputs or opinions”
“If Amagi Onē-sama has deducted as much, it must certainly be true!” Akagi replied with exuberant enthusiasm.
“Nē-sama …” Kaga said, as if trying to chide at the other Kitsune, obviously finding Akagi’s attitude reprehensible, just as many others on the same table did.

“These- I don’t think these are not wisdom cubes anymore” Yuubari said, getting everyone’s attention, her ears twitched and moved aiming the pearlescent white cube in her hand.
Yuubari had moved from one subject to the next, figuring they were still within some sort of debriefing, regardless of the antics her superior had pulled. She kept in mind that they would most likely take these pieces back to the research station and have a field day (or a week) with each one to try and find out as much as they could. With that in mind, moving to the next subject, and keeping the event moving was also her best chance to end up the meeting as fast as possible.
But alas, she couldn’t help her curiosity.
The black haired kitsune procured a pair wisdom cubes from her sleeve and compared the two of them with the ones that Akagi had brought, Helena for her part put them on the focus of the camera, making everyone in the room be able to see them side by side as well, with another murmur of disquiet filling the room. The 2 cubes looked similar in many ways and at the same time their differences were obvious, the wisdom cube looked like a starry night in the sea, deep and sparkling, with a mesmerizing blue of many hues in it. In comparison the cube obtained from the Siren vessel still seemed to have the sparkling lights the wisdom cubes had, but these seemed to move and fluctuate much more easily, with an impenetrable white, almost as sea foam that impeded to look deeper inside of it.
“It feels more responsive… but with a whole different intent to it… It has an -intention- ” She said as she moved her hand with the white cube as if weighing it.
The Kitsune moved the white cube towards the silk handkerchief that held the Dog tags, which was still on Fusou’s hand, she then moved the regular wisdom cube close to them, repeating the action a couple times and then towards Amagi’s new meowfficer.
“I think these cubes react to human souls…” She said almost in disbelief to herself.
She put the cubes back on the table, as well as the regular wisdom cubes, as she sat back and pondered on the implications of such a thing.
There were many possibilities, Doctor Bethancourt himself had discovered that wisdom cubes could have an imposed aspect or function to them, so these cubes might do the same, or so she thought.
“Perhaps they react with souls and people with high affinity to wisdom cubes, too.” She mumbled to herself, but her words were picked up by the camera on Helena’s hands, as such resounding in the room, reaching everyone’s ears.
“Yuubari! It is not fair that you are getting all these for yourself!!”
Leonardo Da Vinci, who was attending the debriefing and was sitting by Vittorio Venetto’s side, couldn’t help herself and made her way to the side of her research-buddy, surprising more than one member of the Sakuran group.
“HAwaaAAahh!!!!”
“Ya-Yamashiro!!”
Yamashiro squeaked in surprise, jumping off her seat and falling backwards. Fusou tried to hold her back but as she was holding tightly on the handkerchief with the sakuran dog tags, she barely grabbed her by her sleeve, in turn with all their movement they managed kick their table forward, pushing Da Vinci who was right behind Yuubari making them both stumble forward to their own table.
The table leaned forward and seemed to be about to fall over if it were not for Akagi and Kaga who without saying a single thing simply held the table and without a word pulled it right on its original position.
The sudden movements had moved everything on the table nonetheless, the cubes on the table had slided forward moving from one side to the other. The moment Akagi and Kaga had set the table back on position the cubes came to a stop, but the motion had made the pieces of twisted metal roll forward, their misshaped form had allowed them to remain on the same position and yet they moved forward, almost as if they had been pulled by the regular wisdom cubes which they clashed against in the middle of the table.
Everyone had very little time to ponder the implication of lugs of metal striking a wisdom cube, there were but fleeting thoughts that perhaps the wisdom cubes would be too fragile or that having so many wisdom cubes outside of a contained space was perhaps not the wisest choice.
All that manner of thoughts came to a halt the moment the regular wisdom cubes started emitting light from within themselves, a light that soon enveloped the whole room, regardless of how big it actually was.

“Amagi Onē-sama! Are you alright?!” Akagi’s frantic voice could be heard even while everyone was still blinded by the flash of light that had taken place.
“A-Akagi is that you? I am fine” Amagi’s voice responded yet sounded much weaker than her usual self, making Akagi more frantic in turn.
“Everyone calm down!” The commander stated. “Everyone please raise your voice only if you are hurt or unwell! TB. Make a scan of the room, let us know if there is anything wrong within the room.”
“Un~ I am fine, Akagi.” Amagi answered back, sounding much more like her usual self.
“Amagi-nē?! Are you alright? You sound off… I think?” Now Akagi sounded much less like herself and much more child-like
“Akagi… were you always this big?” Amagi(?) said.
“Wait, you are not Amagi-nē! You do look and feel a lot like she though…” Akagi(?) said.
It took but a couple more seconds for everyone to finally be able to focus properly and stop having their vision filled with white and black spots.
Not that their eyesight could properly explain what they were seeing. So, a few of them decided to rub their eyes once more. Some even decided to pinch themselves in case they were dreaming.
“Ouch!! Why did you pinch me?!” I-168 squealed.
“In case I was dreaming!” U-81 replied.
“That-That’s not how it works!” the black haired dragon-submarine replied “You have to pinch yourself to see if you are dreaming!”
“But I don’t like pinches! They are painful!” U-81 answered, flinching as if she had been about to get pinched on the arm.
“If you know it, why did you pinch me then?!”
“I figured with you being a dragon it would hurt less?”
“Aha! so you admit I am not a wolf! As such, I cannot be part of the wolfpack!”
“Eh?! You don’t want to be part of our team?!” U-81 replied back with a pout, hurt obvious on her face.
“I-I didn’t mean it like thaAA- Ow OwOw!!”
“Will you girls cut it out?!” Warspite told both of them, as she pinched both of them on their arm. “Something weird is happening, so could you put your goofing-around for later?!”

Everyone was able to see how the Sakuran table now had two more participants on it. Literally on top of the table. Although no one had seen them before, at the same time everyone felt like they had seen them before.
“Eh?! Wait, you are not Amagi-nē! Or are you?...” A seemingly much younger version of Akagi stood on the table, holding Amagi’s hand, staring at her, squinting her eyes and looking her up and down.
She wore even similar clothes to those of Akagi, before her transformation to divine messenger, with much shorter hair held at the sides with ribbons and cute golden bells. She eyed Amagi with confusion evident in her face.
“Er, yes it is me, Amagi, Akagi?” Amagi answered back tilting her head in confusion at the sudden turn of events.
“Eh?! Wait! If Amagi Onē-sama is there, who is that-” Akagi said, the confusion angering her as well as seeing someone else holding hands with her dear sister not helping soothe her mood.
Her temper was rising and her mood was souring quickly. That was, until she saw whose hand she was holding.
“Hm? From the looks of it, you must be Akagi Onē-sama, then?” A child version of Amagi asked Akagi. She had taken whatever little clues had been at hand and found out the most likely explanation for the current situation, showing a great amount of insight for the little kitsune.
She had the same color of hair and eyes, an attire similar to the grown Amagi, but seeming somewhat loose with a design also indicating a slightly more mature than what her apparent age was, as if she was wearing clothes meant to be for someone slightly older than her. This perception was easily dispelled, as the child Amagi turned to look at the child-version of Akagi and an older version of herself, bringing into view not only her multiple tails with an elegant shine to them, but also a red shimenawa belt adorning her clothes with sacred bells at each end of the rope. That alone marked her as a sacred being, possibly a vessel for a sacred spirit, or a champion of the realm in the making.
All of that meant very little to Akagi, though. All that was of import to her was that this child was also her dear sister Amagi.
“A-a-a-Amagi nē-cha-chan?!” Akagi stuttered, into the realization that in front of her was a much younger version of her dear sister.
In a flash of pink flames, Akagi’s clothes reverted back to their original form as she inclined in order to be able to better look at the younger version of Amagi.
“Wait, who are these kids, Yuubari?!” Da Vinci asked her scientific partner.
“Oh, she lost the clothes the moment she became overwhelmed, she probably has to focus to maintain the connection?” someone at their table said.
“I-I Think the cubes reacted with the pieces of their hulls… fascinating…” Yuubari finally replied to Da Vinci without actually looking at her.

“What?!” the little Akagi said as she looked around at the table, stopping briefly at the older Akagi and younger Amagi at the table, all of it without letting go of Amagi’s hand.
“Wait! So that makes you my Amagi Onē-sama!” there were practically sparkless on her eyes as she gawked at the more mature version of her older sister.
“That… I believe that’s a fair assumption, Akagi… -chan. You did well figuring that out.” Amagi said, correcting herself and deciding to praise the younger version of Akagi.
“heh heh!”
The little Akagi practically beamed, her little chest sticking out full of pride as she received the praise, then she seemingly melted as Amagi decided to pat her head as part of the praise.
“Ah! That’s not fair! I want to be praised too!” The older Akagi whined.
“Akagi Onē-sama. please behave, I will praise you… and give you snacks… but only if you behave accordingly.” The little Amagi admonished Akagi.
“Ah- Yes! I understand. Amagi nē-chan!” Akagi said, beaming much in the same manner that her younger version was doing it.

“I think that we need to call off the debriefing… and then maybe have another one later…” The commander said as he stared with disbelief, much in the same manner as everyone in the room did.

2024.12.01 01:41 Feisty_Comedian3772 Did my ex-teacher cross boundaries?

Hello,
I’m currently a 9th-grade female student who had (and honestly still has) a strong crush on my former middle-aged 8th-grade teacher. Long story short, she reported me to the administration about my crossing boundaries. I was very heartbroken and depressed the following months and am still dealing with the consequences (taking pills for depression). I discovered that it was limerence.
But one thing that didn’t sit right with me was how I felt that she was returning my feelings. Keyword: felt. It may be all misinterpretation, but I’ll leave it for you all to decide. Once, I bit my lip at her when she was talking to me, and she did the same thing to me back. Then, when everyone was reading (and I was done reading), I looked at her admiringly and she seemed to have a suggestive glance while slightly leaning over to me. I was sexually aroused by the situation.
Another instance I remember is when I asked her for a hug (she frequently agreed to hug me at that point, and that was before she reported me to the administration) and she said (maybe slightly whispered) semi-playfully, “You’re going to get us both into trouble.” This one may seem insignificant, but once after I was staring at her the entire class period, she said, “Bye, [My Name], love.” I know she could have not meant it romantically, but I still felt like it was kind of crossing the boundaries of a teacher-student relationship.
Also, at the very start of school, we had an open house, and when my mom and I were talking to the teacher, she was staring at my chest the entire time. I felt kind of uncomfortable but also liked it a bit.
Ultimately, it’s just that I feel like her actions contributed to the growth of my feelings toward her, even though she might have not meant anything by them. But what do you think about this? Was what she did inappropriate or am I just dwelling on it too much?
