My transmission is shot. KBB value of 2015 Subaru Forester with 103k miles ~$6000 New transmission = $9,500 Used transmission = $3,600
Would it be better to install the used transmission and trade in the car or just see what I can get for it as-is?
==Longer version
Hey all. I'm not really a car person, but I could really use some help.
My car: 2015 Subaru Forester; I have followed the owner's manual for maintainence and have pretty much every scrap of paper I've received from service (including oil changes and alignments). The only major fixes I've had to do outside of maintainence was getting the air conditioner repaired and an issue with the drainage on the moon roof causing a leak.
The problem: I turned on my car which turned over without problem, but a bunch of warning's came on: CHECK ENGINE - Emission control system needs to be checked AT OIL TEMP - Transmission system needs to be checked ABS - ABS needs to be checked Vehicle Dynamics Control system needs to be checked Hill start assist system needs to be checked I google what other people have encountered and a lot of people have stated there was either a seal or sensor in the transmission and they were able to at least drive the car to the mechanic (some reported driving two weeks). I figured I'd see if I could drive it to the mechanic less than a mile away. As soon as I put it in reverse the makes horrible chunking sounds, shakes and seems like it's going to stall. I stop, put it in drive and pull into my spot. I have the car towed to the mechanic who tells me that my transmission is dead (based on diagnostic codes and them experiencing the same issues when they tried to move the car [he described it as sounding like the engine was full of marbles] and the presence of metal in the transmission fluid. I have two options to get it replaced:
1) $9,500 for a new transmission 2) $3,600 for a used (106k miles) transmission. The used transmission would come with a 30-day warranty.
Kelley Blue Book estimates the value of ~$6000 before this happened based on condition of the car. I'm thinking I'd like just trade in my car for a new one. My question is: Would it be worth it to put that $3,600 into the car and then try to trade it in, or just see what I can get for it as-is? Or should I just get the used transmission and stick with the car? Given the value of the car I don't think a new transmission is the right move.

I work for a small business, Iāve been here around a year and Iām wanting to ask for a raise. I believe that if I ask I will get it, but Iāve never asked for one before so Iām really nervous about it.
I currently make $18/hr in BC Canada so a little above minimum, I was given a raise pretty quickly due to my previous experience working in this industry. I have coworkers who make $22, I do the same job as they do but theyāve been there a while longer. Most of my other coworkers make around $18 I believe. I do all of the regular duties expected and Iām good at my job but I also do additional roles. I do almost all of the repair work (patching and painting) as well as a small amount of carpentry and some consulting. Generally Iām often fixing things up and improving the visuals, redoing graphics and such. I also do weekly deep cleans which Iām paid separately for at a rate of $30/hr for two hours a week.
My boss is cool and I do like they guy, the business is really small so obvs I know heās not rolling in it but I would like to be paid a bit more since Iām doing a lot of extra work that no one else here can really do. My apologies for being vague about the business I just would like to have a bit of internet privacy if possible lol.
Iām in contact with the owner and his wife pretty often as I update them when I start and complete tasks or to ask input. I donāt see them a lot in person so Iād need to message my boss to ask for the raise.
Iād like to go from $18 to $20 or $22 ideally. I mean obviously Iād like to be paid like a million bucks an hour haha but Iām trying to be realistic. Iād probably shit my pants if I was offered $24 or something as thatās like pretty unreasonably good for how easy and chill my job is. Iāve been to school and have a certificate in an arts field so I do technically do skilled labour I think since a lot of what I do is artistic repair and design. If that helps.
The last job I had in the same industry was hell comparatively and the owners of that business were comically evil. Because of my experience there Iām a bit chronically nervous about asking for anything even though my current boss has been nothing but kind to me. Iāve never asked for a raise before so Iād like some advice on how to word it. The extra money would be really big for me since I am disabled (not yet on disability) and I live very frugally in an extremely expensive city.
