2025.01.18 19:26 SkyslicerX2 Thoughts on Worm from first time reader
So I just spent the last two and a half weeks reading Worm after putting it off for half a year. I'm still reeling from the ending and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a splinter in my brain for awhile.
Years of fanfic reading made me pretty bad at evaluating prose and how technical writing is but im like 75% sure this series is at a pretty high level. Dialog was cringe at some points but it seemed to smooth out. Took me totally by suprise that a web series was allowed to have this level of quality.
As for the actual series. Damm. I think I predicted maybe about 25% of the story but the other 75% just kept throwing me for a loop. Right up until Aster died and Golem was defeated I thought that their powers were what was going to cause the end of the world.
I had a feeling that Taylor's power was going to end up controlling people but Kephri still caught me by suprise. I completely did not expect that Cauldron would have the dead body of an alien God in their basement that they fed to people. The ending is what really hit the hardest for me. I consider 30.7 to be the ending with Tenneral being a "last moments dream" thing. I don't think Taylor could ever accept being powerless even after Kephri.
It's such a cruel ending. Really a road to hell ending if their ever was one. Watching in horror as the poor little meow meow got her entire identity and legacy degraded as she just tried to do the right thing. Even beyond her fucked up activities at the end of day all Taylor wanted to do was help. Wanted to work together with others to make the world a better place. If Rachel's mental shift was losing the ability to read people the Taylor's was losing the ability to tolerate deviations in cooperation. I suppose that all led to Kephri in the end.
At the end of the day our fucked up hero saves the world and gets two bullets in the back of the head for it. A crushing message if there ever was one. That the "How" matters just as much as the "Why" and "What" even if there was no other choice. That Taylor never had a chance at a happy ending from the jump, no matter what happened. That her powers fucked up her head in such a way that peace was never possible.
I think that even if Kephri had never happened and even if Scion turning never happened that things would have turned out essentially the same for Taylor. She would always put herself in a place of maximum desperation and when her power wasn't enough she would always push things one step further, one step too far.
Worse that all the other villians get a pass. Even when half of them weren't helping at all until Kephri took them over. All the bad guys get forgiven and all the heros get mentally scarred beyond recognition. Then those hero's all have to deal with all the new even more fucked up villians they spent years containing.
And Taylor not only gets murdered but also is now (probably) considered just north of the worst people in the history of humanity. Put right up there with Jack Slash and Doctor Mother. The only little comfort is that her friends survived.
I'm just glad that Kephri had Imp there to help her along as much as she could.
Man it's a cruel way to end a story. I imagine it hurt 10x worse for those who grew up alongside Taylor too. Binging unfortunately dosent give the time to build up that depth of bond to a character.
Now on a more positive note (distraction from the pain) lets talk characters.
My favorite is obviously Taylor as our resident failgirl girl boss. Her thought process is very similar to my own and it makes her especially interesting to read. My only gripe is that we never got to see her awaken a plague of locusts or a swarm of cicadas. In a world where Kephri dosent happen I would have loved for her final power up to be swarms of super locusts. I hoped her ability to connect to people would be telepathic instead of controlling. Where she would be able to relay plans and information directly to people without messing up words. Fulfill the desire for cooperation without violating free will you know.
My other favorite character is Rachel. I don't know the community opinion on her but I really like her character. The harsh mean girl with a soft side is one of my favorite archetypes and I think Rachel's character executes it well. I wished she got more screen time and I'll admit that I was shipping Taylor x Rachel in my head for about half the story. You also can't hate a girl who loves dogs that much. Violent revolution to protect the doggo's very compelling
I'd honestly hoped she would get a second trigger and expand her abilities. Maybe being able to beef up herself? Until Kephri I'd held out hope that she would be the one to monsterfiy Taylor's bugs. Imagine millions of half foot long, armor plated, super strength, locusts tearing through shit with the ability to bite right through metal. Terrifying. I think if there were time to focus on it Rachel and Tattletale were the only ones who could have prevented Taylor's self destruction. Rachel would knock Taylor on her ass in a way that wasn't betrayal and Tattletale would talk her out of the pit she dug in her mind. Maybe that's just wishful thinking though. As for the rest of the characters I liked pretty much all of them in little ways. Tattletale and Imp are the catty bitches you want in your corner. Grue was artfully broken. Regent was fucked up but still subconsciously caring. Legend was a broken hero and Chevilier was the hero everyone needed. Contessa was a nice parallel to Taylor as someone who had devoted their existence to being a living weapon. Even all the little side characters had enough quirks and style to be entertaining in their short runtime.
I'm going to take a break for awhile before coming back. I'm not sure which series I'll read next as I liked all 4 sections of the flowchart.
I'd appreciate some (quality) fanfic recommendations where things are more happy. I'll even take more suffering as long as there is a sickly sweet ending.

2025.01.18 19:26 Wrong-Ad4130 I wish we went deeper into the debate about the extermination cause in someways I think it's justified but it's also mostly fucked up.
 | Think about it. Hell really could use Exterminations if done right. And I'm not saying this as a supporter of the yearly Genocide. No. What I'm saying is that Hell, while still hell at the end of the day, is infested with various people that have abused the power system and have actually prospered in Hell rather then suffered. Hell is supposed to be a place of eternal punishment and the way I think the story shows that is by having it be an echochamber and cesspool of rancid and deplorable people. You can't end up in hell in this world and be fine and dandy because now you're stuck with people who are just as bad as you, if not WORSE. They all tear into eachother and fester, creating a place well deserving of the title "Hell." The only reason there's some good in hell is because of the small pockets of humanity that shine through in a few exceptions of Sinners. Angel Dust, Rosie, Husk, & most importantly Sir Pentious are all undeniably horrible people, but it's their comradery and exceptional humanity that make us root for their change. Hell, we see exactly that when Sir Pentious gets redeemed. He was a wannabe overlord who tore down legions to rule over hell but had the compassion to be softened into the heroic goofball he is today. And he gladly threw his pride away if it meant he got the love and recognition he thought he deserved. In a way, that small ray of hope in Sinners is exactly way Charlie is justified in her Dream. Because dispite the cesspool nature of hell, there are still those who cling on to their good natures. However, I belelive Adam is also justified in bringing the Exterminations to hell. Like I said, Hell is a cesspool of disgusting people who have done horrible things. However that alone is not enough to justify the Exterminations. In the show, the reason the Exterminations were green lit is because of a fear of hell uprising. This reason seems pretty baseless due to the lack of evidence given by the characters, however there actually is real evidence to support this paranoia. Overlords. As alluded to before, Overlords are the sole exception to the punishment of hell. Instead of being another insect in the nest of hell, Overlords are actually awarded for their atrocities. They own souls, own parts of hell, have magic powers, and most importantly of all, they actually prosper off the rancid actions of other Sinners. The more sin people do in the pride ring, the more powerful and influential the Overlords get. The Overlords alone are reason enough to hold Exterminations annually, as they support the hypothesis of Sinners being able to create an uprise. While some would argue that the Overlords don't actually have a way to Heaven in the 1st place, their exponential growth in power and magic would be enough to not even entertain the chances. This is why I think this is the most justified reason for the Exterminations. But I also believe this is also the most justified reason against the Exterminations. Think about it even more. Did anything I mention above about the Overlords get brought up by Sera or Adam? NO! Not once did they bring up the Overlords and how they can be seen as genuine potential threats to Heaven. Sera only said there was a fear of an Upriseing while never giving her reasoning for it and Adam only saw the Exterminations as a game. Sera nor Adam never gave a critical thought behind the Exterminations. They did it out of rashness not reason. This is most evendent in how Adam treated the Exterminations. Like I said before, Adam treated it like a game, but I'd also like to mention that the way he handled them was in the most immature and sloppy way possible. Remember how I mentioned Overlords are genuine threats and that it is completely justified for the Exterminators to target them? Not once is it mentioned or even implied that Overlords were ever targeted specifically. It wasn't until Alastor stepped right up and got molly wopped that we see or hear of an Exterminator striking down an overlord. And that's not even the end of it. The way Adam kills off Sinners is also reckless as shit. You honest to god expect me to believe a Sinner child is so important to kill, you felt it necessary to MUTILATE a commanding officer and BANISH her in hell!? Absolutely not! This not only furthers the notion of Adam not caring about who he kills, it also tells us something more important. The value of a Sinner child had the same value as every other degenerate scumbag that just so happens to be a Sinner. Let that sink in. To the Exterminators, a cannible Sinner child has the same value as an adult rapist, murderer, drug dealer, and arsonist. Jesus fucking christ. And last but certainly not least, the most immature, reckless, and thoughtless thing Adam did with the Exterminations was leaving holy wepons in hell. This rotund fuck gave so little of a shit about his job and thought so little of sinners, him and his goons intentionally left the only things that could kill them in the home Turf of their enemies. If the Overlords weren't enough of a reason to think about a potential uprise, them having access to Holy Wepons will definitely do the trick. AND IT'S ALL HIS FAULT! IT'S ALL ADAMS FAULT! Just like how Charlie's dream of redemption in Sinners holds justifiable weight, but gets bogged down due to her flaws of naivety and tunnel vision, Adam and his Exterminations are the same. Adam genuinely has justifiable reasons to exterminate Sinners, but not only does he do it for the worst reason conceptually possible, he did it in such a way that not only did it not help at all, HE MADE EVERYTHING SO MUCH WORSE! I think the worst part about all of this, is that we never got any of this in the show. We never got to see Charlie and Adams ambitious clash beyond the bare minimum. And I 100% DO NOT blame Vivziepop for that. I blame Amazon for neutering this show to an 8 episode season. So at the end of the day, what did we learn?
