r/sideprojects: What do you want changed?

2025.01.19 02:19 fkih r/sideprojects: What do you want changed?

Hello everyone, u/fkih here! I've been an active member of other side-project related communities for a while now, and personally believe that these communities leave a lot to be desired.
I recently made a claim with Reddit to take ownership of this subreddit and that request was granted, and wanted to begin implementing changes that, based on my experience, would better a community like this one.
While I build a collection of changes, I wanted to reach out to anyone from this community and allow the opportunity to bring forward your suggestions for rules, events, etc.
Anything pertaining to the community is allowed.

2025.01.19 02:19 Independent-Sea292 Budgie and Tiel co-caging

I’ve got a female cockatiel, an English budgie, and a typical budgie from the pet store. The budgies are male. The budgies share a cage, and the girl has her own. During the day the birds enjoy a shared space for play and flight. They perch together, go into each other’s open cages, bicker, play, fly, and are buddies. So my question is - does anyone house both species together (same large cage)? I read all kinds of “dont’s,” but with a well established flock that gets along all day, is it a problem? Does anyone have success at this with these species?

As per title. Found a used SA-20 with wooden stock for similar money to a new SA-08 with synthetic stock. Not a fan of plastic trigger guards like the SA-20. Which way would you lean? For a 14yo shooter upgrading from a single shot. He wants to stay on 20ga which we're already set up to reload.

2025.01.19 02:19 NixyeNox Rules PSA - No NSFW Photos

I can't believe I need to write this, but three different people have tried to post photos of their genitals here in the last month or two. To those people, I say: what do you think you are doing? There are kids here. We are not a NSFW sub. Kids have rare diseases, too. You probably do not have a rare disease, you have a not-so-rare disease, you just need to go and actually talk to your doctor about it.
We cannot diagnose you. Even if we could, we cannot wave a magic wand and solve your problem. All roads lead to *talk to your doctor about this already.* I assure you, your doctor has seen worse. You do not need to know what specialist to see, you just need to talk to your normal doctor and they will send you to a specialist, if needed. If you do not know who else to talk to, maybe try Urgent Care.
Since Reddit's automod has even less tolerance of this than I do, your photos are not posting anyway, the automod just makes them vanish down a dark hole that only mods can see, if they happen to look at the logs, and even then the automod politely hides the photos and tells us it removed your posting as suspected sexual content.
To sum up, you are violating Rules 2, 7, and general common sense. Close Reddit and make an appointment with your doctor.

2025.01.19 02:19 DannyFlood I've been a nomad for more than 15 years. Here's three of my favorite travel hacks.

Hello guys!
My name is Danny and I’ve been a fulltime world traveler and nomad for about 15 years. I’ve engaged in epic adventures, sailing across the sea and cycling across some countries. I’ve also hitchhiked around India, traveled on a cargo ship through Indonesia, explored the Amazon, performed as a street dancer in Belgrade and danced tango in Buenos Aires, swum crystal clear waters in Greece, ridden horses in Argentina and camels around the pyramids, met Leonidas in ancient Sparta, raced in the original Olympic stadium, climbed the Himalayas, dived in the Red Sea, practiced Yoga in Nepal, lived in rustic Korean villages, prayed at Buddha’s birthplace, swum across Hong Kong bay, swum the Ganges, driven a motorcycle from one end of Vietnam to the other, and likewise in Thailand… and much, much more.
I'd recommend this lifestyle to anyone, but it isn't always easy!
All the time people contact me asking how to unlock this kind of lifestyle for themselves, so, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite travel hacks for you guys — 100% free!
I’ve used various travel hacks such as these to make this lifestyle sustainable, and recently, I’ve been leveraging AI to make it even easier. Today, I’ll specifically talk about how to get incredibly cheap deals on flights and also how to get free accommodation using AI and other unconventional means.
I hope that this post can help people. I saw something on my feed recently where a woman was saying she was spending $18,000 on a nine day tour in Japan. I’d like to show people a different and more empowering way of travel where they don’t have to go into debt to finance it 😊
This is a bit long, and formatting on Reddit is tricky, but you can view the whole thing beautifully formatted on Medium here.
Three Simple Travel Hacks to Save Thousands Here are a few quick hacks to get you started:
✈️ Hack #1: Save on Flights with Secret Flying
Go to Secretflying.com and create an account. Pick the airport “hubs” that you would consider flying in and out of. For me, I monitor several different busy airports where I know where there are good flight deals. Such as Athens, Singapore, Istanbul, and Bangkok. If you’re based in Europe, you can also try places like Amsterdam and London.
All you have to do is visit the website, pick the airports you want to monitor, and you’ll discover all kinds of deals the general public misses. For example — I flew from Singapore to Athens a couple of years ago for roughly $125 (Scoot Airlines).
Just in the last week, I’ve seen flight deals from Bangkok to Oslo and Stockholm for $156 and $162, respectively.
Why do I choose one-way instead of round trip, you ask? Flexibility. You don’t necessarily need to fly back from the same airport you flew in from, and you have freedom to choose your dates and destinations as you travel. Many of the “flyover” countries provide the most incredible and unique experiences.
🏡 Hack #2: Use ChatGPT to Get Free Accommodation
I’ve found that ChatGPT can help you land free or super cheap accommodations by personalizing your outreach on websites like:

How I Do It
1️⃣ Personalized Requests: Platforms like Couchsurfing require you to send personalized requests to hosts. Instead of writing each request manually, I copy a host’s profile into ChatGPT and ask it to craft a friendly, personalized message for me.
2️⃣ House Sitting Example: Last year, I used TrustedHousesitters to stay in a stunning 39th-floor apartment in Dubai for free. ChatGPT helped me create a compelling house sitter profile using details from my Couchsurfing profile. Within days, I had an offer to housesit an incredible place with a pool, gym, and high-speed Wi-Fi.
3️⃣ Maximize Opportunities: By sending out multiple personalized requests quickly, you can greatly increase your chances of landing free stays. I sent about 20 requests for house sitting in Dubai and got a great place within a few days.
4️⃣ Applying Across Platforms: This method isn’t limited to just travel. You can use this method to personalize outreach for freelance job applications on sites like Upwork. Just copy the details of the project into ChatGPT and let it craft a detailed, customized proposal.
AI Makes Scaling Easy
ChatGPT makes it possible to send out numerous requests quickly and efficiently, turning travel hacking into a breeze. Imagine sending out 30 applications in 30 minutes — the chances of landing an opportunity skyrocket.
Additional Tips
This strategy can help you save thousands of dollars while opening doors to unique and unforgettable experiences.
Hack #3: Skip Expensive Platforms like Airbnb and Negotiate Directly with Properties
On average, nightly rentals tend to be 3–4x more expensive than the nightly rate for monthly rentals, so whenever possible it’s best to try and negotiate a stay for at least one month. This is one of the easiest ways to save a bunch of money on accommodation when you travel. For example, recently I stayed at a very nice hotel in Nepal which charges $300 a month, but $30 per night, which comes out to $900. By simply negotiating a monthly rate, I was able to save $600!
You can often negotiate these deals by approaching or contacting room renters directly. In Istanbul, Airbnbs and hotels in popular areas are excessively priced but I was able to rent rooms by the month on both the European side (Balat) and Asian side (Kadikoy), five minutes from the central areas, by joining Facebook groups such as “Istanbul flats” and contacting those who were advertising.
Pro-tip: If you tell people you are willing to move in today, and pay them cash upfront in full, it will make it much easier for these people to agree to letting you move in. Most hosts are wary of tire kickers and people wasting their time, so they very much appreciate a person who makes a decision quickly.
Another great way to find great deals involves spending a few nights in a hostel. Hostels provide a fantastic exchange of information, both from the staff and other travelers who have just finished exploring the city or country you’ve just arrived in. In Sofia, I spent one night in a hostel and saw posters for cheap room rentals in the common area, making the search for a private room as easy as it gets. In Haikou (Hainan), the hostel offered special monthly rates for private rooms starting from just $220 USD.
As we all know, the rental market is broken in a lot of places and especially for nomads like myself, it’s difficult to find affordably priced rooms for short stays. So I created a database collecting and saving WhatsApp contact details for affordable rooms in cities around the globe such as Istanbul, Bansko, Sarande, Dahab, and Thailand. These rooms range from $200–$400 per month and by negotiating directly with the hosts, we are able to avoid excessive costs on platforms like Airbnb.
I’ve made this document free to access for other frugal-minded travelers, and just ask others to contribute their own contacts to add to the list! If interested, drop me a message on social (@dandanflood) and I’ll share the Google document with you.
Good luck and let me know you guys get on! Cheers to more affordable travel! 🍻

2025.01.19 02:19 Ok_Dig8247 Social Exhaustion Question

Hi, i'm not sure if autistic or not, but I had an experience i'd like to see if anyone can relate to.
I attended a party with my boyfriend's friends, most of whom are vague acquaintances. I already know I have a hard time with small talk, talking to strangers, and group settings, and didn't really know what to talk about with his friends- putting aside the fact that they all know each other so well and I'm the outlier, their convos moved so fast. I'm pretty okay at 1-on-1 convos because it doesn't seem overwhelming or intimidating, but I've always been terrible at group settings. I got really quiet and didn't know where to stand or what to do. I didn't want to seem like a loner by sitting by myself and not talking to anyone, so I struggled through for 4 hours but reached a point where I felt like I needed to leave. I was so mentally and even physically exhausted- it felt like all of the energy had drained out of my body. I needed silence and to be by myself. I wished I could've talked to people more but I felt so unable to in the moment. I'm not a quiet person around my loved-ones.
I just needed to get this out there and was wondering if anyone who is autistic struggles with group situations (and strangers) in the same way i do. I really wish I could like them but they take such a toll on me.

2025.01.19 02:19 Mythicalforests8 I should’ve never played at the presidential inauguration (Part 5)

Part 4: https://www.reddit.com/nosleep/s/knF7LwPdj6
Sorry for the long wait, we spent some time in Virginia to rest and plan our next move. But we do know we have to leave soon, so heres a recap on what happened:
When we got to Virginia, we checked into a hotel, and it was amazing being able to sleep in an actual bed instead of on some leaves in a tent. But we were then hungry, we hadn’t eaten anything since leaving North Dakota, and our food we already had long spoiled. So we searched where the best restaurant near us was, and it was located in a sketchy alleyway, but we were all hungry anyway, so we left our hotel room and went down the alleyway.
But down the alley, I saw two glowing eyes, but those weren’t red, but instead green. But we ignored it and entered the restaurant. It was quite petite, with a small retro like dining area, with the menu on a window. So we read it.
But everything said “mystery item” but we were very hungry and didn’t want to spend more time looking for another restaurant. So we went to the counter to pay but we then saw the food, in a take out bag with a jar for us to pay. We could’ve just stolen the food as there was no cameras, but we didn’t want to break the law so we grabbed the bag and left our cash on the counter. We then started walking back to our hotel room.
When we arrived at our hotel, I opened the bag and opened one of the take out boxes. It just seemed like fish and chips, so I grabbed a fry and ate it, but it was very chewy, like skin. I thought it was just a bad fry so I grabbed another one and ate it, it was chewy, too. Meanwhile, Ernest grabbed a piece of the fish and ate it, before immediately spitting it out.
He said to us it tasted like pork, with the fried part tasting like skin, too. I figured the food just went bad, so I went to the trash bin to throw it, but a slip of paper on the top caught my eye, so I grabbed it to read what it said.
“The Ethan” the paper said.
Then it started coming to me, I remembered cannibals saying that human flesh tasted like pork, the fish tasted like pork. As well as the fries being chewy, like skin. We were eating our friend, Ethan, all this time. I felt like I needed to vomit, but I fought back feeling of nausea and grabbed the drink that the restaurant provided to us. It looked red, like fruit punch. So I started to drink it, but instead of the sweetness of artificial fruit, it tasted like blood. I read the label the container said.
“Ethan’s blood”
I couldn’t hold it back anymore, I ran to the toilet to empty out the contents of my stomach. I no longer felt hungry, considering we just consumed our friend, Ethan. “How could this be five stars?” I thought to myself. Then our door knocked.
I, shaking in fear, grabbed the doorknob to open it, but I realized I should look through the peephole first, so I did. But no one was there, so I opened it anyway.
It was a note.
I picked it up an read it:
“Thank you for buying from our restaurant, we hoped you loved our speciality, Ethan’s”
I ripped the paper in half and threw it in the trash.
“Should we leave?” I asked Aiden and Ernest. But they said no and we should check into another hotel
But I was so tired I didn’t want to spend the hassle finding a new one, so I decided to stay back while they left to find a new one. I forgot what happened after that, but I do know I dozed off quickly.
When I woke up at around 3AM, I felt extremely thirsty, so I grabbed a bottle of water that I had, but instead of the taste of minerals and h20, I tasted blood. I spat it out, only to see it had something written on it.
“Here’s a gift for buying at our restaurant, here’s more of Ethan’s blood!”
