Al caminar por el centro, específicamente zona 1, a veces he notado ciertas cosas raras, personas que actúan de cierta forma, fachadas de lugares que se ven turbios (sobre todo por la noche) pero tenía curiosas si alguien más ha visto cosas raras.

2025.01.19 03:02 Traditional-Sell8872 In Defense of the “Sassy” FMC
My original title for this post was going to be “Unpopular Opinion: I love bitches!!” But I thought that might get taken down. And, if I’m being honest, it’s a little clickbaity.
Now, I am physically incapable of being succinct, so let me put a TL;DR upfront in the hopes of a) not making anyone who’s not interested in this argument sit through a novel, and b) not have my argument misconstrued before I get to make it.
You do not have to like characters you don’t like. You don’t have to like books you don’t like! You don’t have to read anything that doesn’t interest you. If my goal was to change your preferences, I’d be setting myself up for failure, and I’d be a hypocrite.
What I AM asking you to do is a) think a little bit about the cultural context people (who happen to mostly be women in this genre) are writing in, and b) maybe think a little differently about how you talk about things you don’t like. Ready? Yay!
Oh, another huge caveat is that I’m American, always have been, and so my perspective is very much a Western one. I understand that my experience won’t apply to everyone reading this.
My main argument is that a lot of FMC attributes I see people complaining about seeing too much on this subreddit are still things that are very much difficult for women IRL to achieve. That makes it a very appealing fantasy for a lot of writers to write about and for readers to escape to.
IRL, women aren’t encouraged or allowed to express anger the same way men are. Women aren’t generally encouraged to exhibit strength in the same way men are; and when they do, they’re not praised for doing so the same way men are.
(Also, later in this post, I take issue with gender essentialist rhetoric surrounding a lot of these arguments, but I want to acknowledge upfront that gender isn’t a strict male-female binary. I’m a cis woman so again, that colors my experience, but I want this discussion to be as inclusive as possible!)
So, I think it’s TOTALLY natural that for a LOT of romantasy writers, a lot of whom are women, to think: hey! You know what would be fucking awesome? Running around with a sword, flipping off and stabbing everything wrong in the world, and being praised for it!
Source? Am a woman writer writing a rude FMC who stabs things and whose love interest approves of said rudeness and stabbing. (And there’s a lot more than stabbing, but that’s not the point. Yes, I am perhaps motivated to write this post because my beloved FMC who I have been working on for a decade would perhaps not be so beloved by some of y’all. And that’s okay! Just getting my biases out there.)
Is some of the common-ness of this character because it got popular and now people see dollar signs when they look at this trope? Yes, totally. But I also think it’s because the fantasy of righteous anger (and shit, sometimes NOT righteous anger!!) is very unfulfilled in modern life, especially in a time where we’re getting our rights taken away. And this genre is, at its core, very often about women having their wants fulfilled.
… shit, I had a LOT more to say, but this is already getting super long. I wanted to dissect more of the common complaints I see about “sassy” FMCs, but maybe I’ll make a pt. 2 another time and let this spark an initial discussion! Plus, I’m sure there are a ton of perspectives on this issue I haven’t considered yet.
Ultimately, I’m really not trying to change anyone’s likes or dislikes! But this is a smart and feminist community, so I’m interested to hear everyone’s thoughts :)
