I have two kids (3 and 2) and they regularly bring back drawings and artwork a couple days each week after daycare. It's very nice to see what they've been doing and seeing the improvement over to last year or so with some of it being on display on the fridge. My issue though is that it's getting to the point where we actually have quite of lot stuff now.
I'm thinking of just spending an hour our so, sifting through and picking out the good ones to keep and then quietly getting rid of the rest. Just would like to know how everyone else deals with this. Thanks!

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto in September 2024, and then in December, I found two cancerous nodules. I just had my thyroid removed a couple of days ago. The weird thing is I can't cry anymore, I would always get sad watching a video online and now nothing. Is this normal?

2025.01.19 21:46 Synthetic_AI People who want more housing in the Bay, would you be willing to attend and speak at public meetings and/or write in your comment in favor of housing?
I know it may not yet be mainstream but there seems to be a growing contingent of people here who are in favor of allowing more housing to be built here as opposed to the current situation where it is heavily restricted.
There are plenty of active anti-housing organizations, as well as a particular group of often VERY disproportionately retired homeowners who attend these meetings en masse on a regular basis in basically every city in the Bay.
Yet many times there is little to no representation of pro housing views at these meetings, and I think this has a lot to do with the fact pro-housing residents are many times working people with busy lives and the timing (typically weekdays) and length (8+ hours of comment before a vote is taken is not unheard of!) keep the status quo.
I know many people feel like the state is working on this and or cities are getting better but there are those of us who would like to see and need progress to be much faster than it’s current pace.
I think the only way that will happen is if people make their voice heard. Officials take large stock in the comment given in person which is typically right before they make major decisions. (which may or may not actually be a good thing).
I really feel like there is already enough of us out there that if just a small percentage took action it would make a massive difference.

Waaay back (around 1969-ish) I was in Camp Fire Girls. (They changed to just ‘Camp Fire’ and allow boys these days but back then it was girls only). If you aren’t familiar with them think Girl Scouts. Similar after school club.
Anyway, we sold candy to raise money for our ‘troop’. I remember standing in front of the store with my friends and our leader trying to convince people to pay $1 for the box of chocolate candy (which was a LOT of money back then!)
I would look longingly at the candy but I knew that there was no way I could afford to buy one of them. My family was poor and I didn’t have any allowance to save up to buy anything. So getting to eat one of the candies was not in my future at all.
Along came a man who looked at the various options of candies, then asked us girls “which one is the best?” The other girls all agreed that the chocolate mints were the best choice. He said “If those are the best ones, then I want one of those!”
One girl took the money while another girl handed him the box of candy. Then he handed the box of candy back to us and said “These are for you to enjoy!”
We were shocked and then elated. I’m pretty sure we squealed our “Thank you!” to him as we tore open the package and quickly finished off all the candy. I decided that someday when I grew up I’d do the same thing for someone else.
It’s been over 50 years and I STILL remember how much that small gesture meant to me.
Now when I see Girl Scouts selling cookies I walk up to them and ask which ones are the best. Then I buy a box of “the best” and give it to them to enjoy.
Every time I do this it reminds me of how good it felt to be the receiver but it feels even better to be the giver.

My mom and I are both my dad’s full-time care givers. He was diagnosed 14 months ago with Stage 4 NSCLC w/ brain mets.
Over the last few months, he has shown early signs of dimentia, which makes sense considering his diagnosis. His behavior has become childlike and obsessive at times. He tends to latch on to something he’s obsessed with for a while and then moves on (the latest was coffee, so it’s all very harmless).
However, his latest “obsession” has been with black people. My mom gave me the example of them waiting at the Dr’s office, and my dad was staring intensely at this lovely African American couple. He then turns to my mom and says, “what a beautiful black couple. I’m sure they’ve had to work so hard. I love black people”. It’s all harmless and well-intended, but can make for some awkward social encounters.
I realize this is perhaps a nuanced situation, but has anyone had experience navigating a social situation like this? Unfortunately he’s also had outbursts in public (unrelated to his newest obsession), that have been far less positive. Unfortunately there is zero room to talk to him about why something is inappropriate in the moment, so I have typically had to ignore what is said, calm him down if needed and move on.

Hello those who bother to read.
So my niece had her birthday this week and my sister hadn't asked us to come and visit. During my weekly call with my mother she mentioned if I was visiting this weekend (we are about 2 hours drive away from my niece). I said that i hadn't had an invite from my sister to come, and said to my mum that if she wants us to come then she needs to invite us. So that's what happened after my mum spoke to my sister, they texted me and we arranged to visit this weekend.
Fast forward to the weekend and we have just returned home after visiting my niece. My parents didn't come as my mum had been unwell and said she probably wouldn't be there. For context I'm the one who always calls my parents, they never call me first. When we returned home the wife posted a few photos of the kids on the family chat. First response was from my dad who said "you didn't tell us you were up this weekend" so i gave them a call and they said they were upset as we could have popped in to visit or they could have come over. (Kids were exhausted and it's another 40 mins to their house plus travel back).
I messaged parents to say that i was sorry they were upset, but they could have messaged or called to see if I was up. I said I'm always the one who calls you and communicating works 2 ways. They did not like that at all. My mum said that the reasons she doesn't call me is because i am busy and that she doesn't want to intrude, to which i said that's a poor excuse as my wife's mother calls once a day so we obviously aren't that busy to take their calls. If i don't call them we can go weeks without speaking. They did not like that at all. They call me up saying how could i say such hurtful things, if i was a girl they would call me more and basically said about where this leads too (cutting me off etc). I honestly couldn't deal with it so i hung up and will call them tomorrow once they have had a chance to regulate their emotions. It's very difficult to have a rational conversation with my mother, she will cry at a pin drop and if I'm honest I'm exhausted by it.
Am I the asshole here?
