The way I’ve seen ratings currently used is as follows: 6-Precon level decks 7-Literally anything better than a precon that isn’t optimized as much as possible 8-Optimized high power decks without fast mana 9-Optimized high power decks with fast mana/low tier cEDH 10-Mid and high tier cEDH
The vast majority of players play decks that fall within the bounds of 7 here. The breadth that that covers though is absurd. It’s everything from a precon with 15 cards upgraded that’s looking to slug it out for 15 turns to an optimized landfall deck that’s going to vomit out 20 big tokens by turn 9 if left unchecked.
Those decks do not belong at the same table, just as they don’t belong at the table against an unmodified morph precon or a Narset chaining extra turns on turn 5.
This looks like a 5 point rating scale as is, which isn’t too bad, even though it’s supposed to be 10. But, that’s not quite the case. 9s and 10s are basically treated the same, and for good reason. The power level difference of running fast mana or not is such an insane power level difference, even in decks that are otherwise identical. Proxying out all the BiS interaction and perfect mana base is great, but if you don’t run fast mana, you’re going to get destroyed by a deck that does.
So, it’s more of a 4 point rating system. But…it’s not even really that. Because who in the world is going to put together a deck on their own that performs at the level of a precon? It does exist, but it’s extremely rare outside of gimmicks (such as Ladies Looking Left and Chair Tribal) or intentionally wanting to have a deck to play with new players rocking unmodified precons. Outside of playing with new players, the 6/precon power level is almost never used.
So, we’re at a 3 point power scale. cEDH, optimized combo or stax decks without fast mana, and everything else. That, quite obviously, is not nearly enough granularity.
In my opinion, precons should have always been treated as the 1, the baseline. I have never seen somebody build a deck that wasn’t made as a joke that performs worse than a precon. Which makes sense. If you’re going to spend at minimum $50 on a deck and put time into making it yourself, you’re going to make it better than something you can get off the shelf for $35.
The problem with that is, then people have to self declare their decks as a 3/10, which kind of feels bad. So, we end up in a scenario where in order to make everyone feel like their deck is at least getting a C, that the rating themselves have become worthless. “7” encompasses entirely too much.
There’s not much to do about it at this point. The system as is is too entrenched in the collective consciousness to change it that drastically.
Anyways, rant over.
Not the main point of the post here, but if you want to actually have a good game, have a real rule 0 convo. What turn would you typically win on? Free interaction and tutors? Are you running locks/combos, and are they your main wincon if so? Just talk to people. It’s way more productive than this butchered system of a shortcut that’s deck ratings.

Please don’t eat me I’m just a dude wondering about compensation for my super awesome wife.
My wife FM MD just took a 1099 position working 4 days a week 8-10 patients a day (32ish a week) in an outpatient FM clinic. It’s a private clinic that doesn’t accept Medicaid/medicare.
As a 1099 she doesn’t receive any health or retirement contributions(this is where my handsome ass comes in) and she pays her own malpractice.
We are calculating around 102k as her take home after 60-40 split.
As her non doctor hubby I was just curious what other medical people thought. Is this fair compensation? Are my dreams of being a trophy husband a puff of smoke? All advice welcome!

2025.01.20 05:13 Cat_of_the_woods Everyone has a different view of what it means to have *their* disability. I think it's time to just shut up about how everyone else should view *their* disabikity, based.
Some people refuse to see their disabikity as a part of their identity. Others embrace it.
Other people consider their disability to simply be a different kind of life, (myself included). And of course, others consider it to be exactly like everyone else's. (I personally say my life is "a different kind of life," to avoid downplaying the need for accommodation).
Much like Capital D Deaf vs. lower case d, I think we should acknowledge a person has the right to decide if their disability is a part of their identity, an antagonist in their story, or the best/wordt thing to happen to them.
Let's be real here for a moment. If you went blind due to RP like this one woman on TikTok, and spent the rest of your time travelling the world and experiencing new places as she was after all a millionaire, she'd have a different experience. She says it's the best thing to ever happen to her. But then there are the people who for example, weren't wealthy and lost their careers or due to the disgusting legal system, lost custody of their children just because they're a blind single parent, they would be singing a different tune.
The people who've come to a point in their own interpretation of their life, of appreciating or at least accepting their disability, should not be demanding another person experiencing loss, not do the human thing and that's feel what they need to feel. Feelings may not be facts, but that doesn't mean they aren't real. They're there when you dont have all the facts and get you to do what you can.
I've also noticed people living with their parents who may or may not be receiving government assistance, call others whiners and that "it isn't that bad."
Like, DUDE, I am very happy you're here and you have people that love you taking care of you. We all need to be taken care of at some point and I am genuinely happy you have that support. But not everyone does and thus their problems are very real to them.
On that note, look at the society we're in. How can we NOT feel anxiety about not being able to commute freely, let alone work and afford basic necessities. IME, vocational rehabilitation programs through the state take a long time to get into. When you're losing your job, rent/mortgage is due, and you're physically ill, disabikity for quite a lot of people is pretty damn inconvenient.
In short, we all have a very different journey and relationship with disability. Can we all just support each other?
When someone who has been too depressed to cook and is finally able to make just one meal, that's freaking awesome and deserves praise. And if they didn't, them taking it half a day at a time is good too.
When someone got approved forbdisability benefits, I'm just as happy for that person as someone who found a job. If anything, I deeply resent the system.
And if someone living with chronic pain due to a history of cancer and feeling sad, how about we just be there for them because their feelings are valid. Enough of this invalidating nonsense of, "there are those that didn't make it whod love to be in your shoes." Im certain if those people did make it, they'd have the same human feelings, too.
