I moved in with my roommate about three months ago. Before then, we were only on a polite “hello/hi” basis. Once she moved in, I realized she was very close friends with a guy from our university who had previously spread lies about me having sex with him.
Here’s the backstory: this guy and I only made out once, and it barely went beyond kissing. About a year later, I started hearing that he was telling people we’d had sex multiple times. Even my boyfriend heard about it. I told my boyfriend the truth and I asked if I should confront him, he advised against it, saying the guy would only make me look dumb. I let it go and blocked him on social media.
When my roommate moved in, I thought about telling her since they were so close and I felt he would have told her knowing the kind of person he is. I even sought advice on Reddit, where most people suggested not saying anything, so I didn’t bring it up. Over time, my roommate and I got closer. We were talking for long, studying together, and we were basically getting along really well.
However, her behavior during phone calls with him always made me uneasy. She’d randomly call my name for no reason or try to make small talk while on the phone with him. It annoyed me because I knew everything he had said about me. Once, during a call with him, she suddenly said “sorry” to me. When I asked why, she brushed it off, but I couldn’t shake the feeling they’d been talking about me and she thought I heard.
Last week, I hit my limit. She was on a call with him, typing at the same time as if she didn’t want me to overhear parts of their conversation. Then, she casually asked me what movie she should watch. I wasn’t in the mood, so I told her I didn’t know. That was the last real conversation we had.
Since then, things have been tense. She returned the notes I lent her without saying anything, and even though I’ve been sick, sneezing and coughing, she hasn’t asked if I’m okay. She did give me menthol cream when I asked, but she didn’t even show any concern. Now, we only speak about practical things like replacing our room cards.
I can’t help but feel this tension stems from what he might have told her. Recently, she even put him on speakerphone during a call, which felt deliberate cause she was using her earphones to listen to music before he called. I feel like I let my guard down and started treating her like a friend. My boyfriend advised against bringing it up, saying she probably wouldn’t believe me. I’m moving out in a few days, but I’m struggling to stay calm. I want to speak to her about the sudden change in behavior and also about this guy but I don’t know if it’s worth it. I also know she’ll tell him and share everything I say. I’m tired of holding it all in, but I don’t want to embarrass myself either.

Hi everyone,
I wanted to share something I’ve been struggling with in the hopes that some of you might relate or have advice. Online dating has been really emotionally challenging for me lately, and I’m finding it hard to process everything that comes with it.
I’ve been on a few dates with a couple of really nice people, and while I enjoy their company, I’m struggling to feel a connection. One of the guys I was chatting with (we’d been on 3 dates) recently stopped replying as often and we ended things. I knew deep down he wasn’t the one for me, but as someone who finds it challenging at times to connect with others it still hurt (and the feeling of being back to square 1, back to the apps, first dates and all, it hurt)
I decided to take a step back and pause my dating apps for now, but part of me worries that I’m giving up or missing out. I’ve heard that love happens when you least expect it, but it’s hard to trust that when I feel lonely or disappointed.
Have any of you felt like this before? How do you handle the ups and downs of online dating while staying focused on yourself? Any tips for balancing personal growth with the desire to find connection?
