I grew up in the Philippines where our stories are full of headless friars, women in white scaring motorists, and self-segmenting bat-winged vampires. It was summer so there was no school. My friends Lance, Marco, Emman and I had been playing all morning. After lunch, we all went home to our individual houses and took naps, agreeing to meet out back in the streets after we wake up. So we continued playing on the streets after waking up. We played for a couple more hours, and then it happened. There was this guy walking up the hill towards us, but he was swaying like he was drunk—which was strange because our neighbors got drunk after dinner or the wee hours of the morning. This was 3:00 PM. But that wasn’t even the strangest part—or the creepiest. As he got closer, we realized he was wearing a World War II Imperial uniform. And his head wasn’t where it was supposed to be. He held his head in his right hand by the hair and his officer’s saber in his left. All four of us ran screaming home, deciding we were done for the day.

I've been on here so many times when other people have had this happen to them.
I'm English and on holiday in madrid, my Spanish is pretty poor, probably worse than that.
I went into a restaurant, ordered some food and walked over to pay, the guy asked if I want a beer, no. He asked again I said ' no bebo alcohol, coke por favor' ' coca cola?' 'Si' then he started going on about limon and I thought he must have pre mixed coke and lemon (there were a few options that I didn't understand) he pulled out a lemonade but I just wanted to sit down so I took it.
At the end of my meal I was just looking over the lemonade and it was 3.4 percent.
It was only a bottle and just under half the strength of the cans I used to drink 6 to 8 of nightly but fucking hell.
I've been on here a few times telling people it doesn't count but when it happened to me I didn't know what to do for a few minutes.
Anyway I bought some pastries, a bottle of diet Pepsi and I'm still a month and half sober
For fucks sake lol

2025.01.21 23:55 nerfviking I'm very much looking forward to realtime AI translated subtitles.
...and it's specifically because, as an anime fan, I feel like I can't trust translators nowadays to provide faithful translations without injecting dated slang or inserting their political opinions.
For the record, this technology is going to be open source, available in a future version of VLC Media Player, so anyone who can run VLC will be able to use it locally on their own computer (without checking in with a large corporation) entirely for free.
It seems very likely to me that this technology will probably be easy to extend to providing live subtitles for any spoken dialogue, including in games, on youtube videos, and so on, and will probably also be able to do live OCR so that it can translate written language as well.
Dubs will continue to exist, obviously, but those of us who don't care about a voice-over in our native language (or care a little bit but would rather get our hands on games sooner) will be able to play foreign language games on release and not have to wait for a translation.
Also, just to address the idea that machine translations suck: That was true several years ago, but LLMs have changed that to some extent because they have some "understanding" of concepts (not in the human, conscious sense of "understanding", but sophisticated ones can follow conversations quite well, explain jokes, be perceptive about feelings, and so on). Even if AI translations aren't great right now, the technology is progressing quickly.
