2025.01.22 00:49 mitch_romley Dog can’t stand or walk with probable IVDD. Can’t afford MRI or surgery. Any similar situations?
I have an 8.5 year old female standard poodle.
Yesterday morning while we were all asleep, all we know is she yelped and fell out of bed, we have no idea in which order. We found her laying on the floor, shaking and frozen on her side, she couldn’t sit up or stand. She had partially defecated.
We took her to an emergency vet. They x-rayed her and ultrasounded her abdomen, both were normal. They recommended an MRI but it plus the recommended analysis, overnight stays, and surgery was going to be over $10k which we cannot afford. We elected to bring her home and try to let her recover on her own with meds. She’s on prednisone, gabapentin, and a muscle relaxer.
The vet said it could also be an FCE but that IVDD seems more probable. She can move three of her legs and can feel pain, she can’t move one of her front legs at all. She can’t sit or stand or walk, she can sometimes pull herself up to lay upright.
She has been just laying on her side. We have not been able to figure out how to get her around with slings. We got her outside twice yesterday but she didn’t understand why or that it was potty time (we tried encouraging).
We ordered her a help em up harness that’s arriving this week. We tried to lift her today with towels as slings and it seemed to hurt her. She peed on herself twice and we’ve cleaned her up the best we can.
She’s eating okay but hasn’t been interested in water.
I feel very anxious and discouraged that this is apparently going to take 8-12 weeks and I’m not sure if that’s until she can walk again or until she’s back to normal? This seems like an awful quality of life and I’m so out of my depth trying to care for her. It has to be so awful and scary laying around staring, unable to stand or walk and not knowing why.
How successful is this type of convalescence without surgery? Is trying to let her recuperate at home like this a bad idea?
