I am looking for literature that describes how a person is gently made to rot from the inside. The character of this person would become less and less defined over time, weaker and weaker. Maybe I am looking for a cautionary tale of how a false friend persuades you that this sweet and pleasurable thing is good for you and how you do not notice the damage until it is too late, or almost too late, to stop.
Addiction to mind altering substances is an obvious plot device, but I am looking for something more subtle. Something like the seven deadly sins in Christianity or the five hindrances in Buddhism. How exactly do these sins lead to evil? How exactly do these hindrances hinder insight? And how to tell a true friend from a false one?
The only example I can think of is The Petty Demon by Фёдор Сологуб.
If there is a happy ending, it is also fine. I do not require a tragedy.

Honestly, raise your hand if you’ve seen these posts 1000x: - Planning a Philippines trip - any hidden gems? - Where to see hammerheads in July?
We all have. And I think sometimes we’re tired or guilty of posting them too. I figured: why not build something that lets us look it up ourselves - no more 20-comment threads where half of the answers are “just Google it.”
How it (kinda) works: - Type any critter, site type, or vibe (“shallow reefs for photography”, “wrecks without tech diving”) -> get results with recent sightings or diver notes - Filter shops by actual diver priorities: “fastest boat to sites”, “rents full-face masks”, or “has a post-dive snack bar.”
But i don’t want this to suck. So tell me: - What’s your biggest headache when planning dives? (mine: great website but bad safety briefing and rusty regs) - Would recent sighting logs (e.g. “mantas here 2 days ago”) make you trust a site more?
If this works, we can finally say: “Check the map-it’s all there!”. If you’re curious, I’ve been iterating for a while at diverplus - What’s missing? What’s overkill? Tell me more please.
(P.S. If you’ve got niche dealbreakers like “must have nitrox” or “no large charter boats”, I’m all ears!)

Can Capetonians please tell me why, when another human being pass them and greet them with a very basic hello, you just completely ignore the person? It's not as if I go around shouting hello at everyone at the mall, but sometimes in say a park or walking down a street etc, I would feel the social responsibility to greet a stranger, and 99% of the time they will ignore you but worse make you feel like you are some kind of freak. Why is that? I was not born here and were I am from it is just the norm, but apparently not here.
