 | Hey folks, I was at a thrift store last week and found this item inconspicuously perched on the back of a top shelf. At first I though it was just a long, square piece of scrap wood, but when I looked more closely, I noticed what I believed was Japanese writing on one side. I pulled it down, realized it was actual a box—a very old box—and opened it to find what I believe is an antique hanging scroll painting rolled up inside. I carefully unrolled it and realized I had something special in my hands. I did a quick Google lens search in the store and couldn’t find any definitive information. Needless to say, I was glad to pay the $10 they were asking for this “box”, if for no other reason than to get it home and do more research. That said, I know absolutely nothing about written Japanese, and don’t really know how to go about finding a meaningful translation of the text on the box, the artist’s signature, and a small marking on the back side of the scroll. I already used Google translate to look at both the full blocks of text and the individual symbols/words, and found that the full blocks yield wildly different translations than the individual symbols would indicate. I can’t even trust how accurate the translations may or may not be due to my ignorance of the language. So, I’m hoping someone who can read Japanese can help me meaningfully understand what the individual symbols mean and how they combine to make the full translation. I want to be able to accurately research and identify this piece, and knowing the text will be a great start. This year one of my (35F) friends, “Sarah” (34F) got a divorce. Sarah and her ex just grew apart and both agreed it was the right call, nothing dramatic there. She’s got a really great kid and has majority custody. Sarah had a really rough childhood with a really horrible mother and has worked so hard to overcome that. We live really close so my husband and I have tried to step up and help as much as we can. Sarah is really something special, she’s genuinely stunning, very smart with a really great job, and she’s just overall lovely to be around. Not being biased, she’s a real catch.
About six months ago she started dating a new guy, “Bobby” (38M). At first he seemed fine, bland but inoffensive. However, as time passed he started displaying some really concerning behaviors. Bad mouthing her as a mom, calling her kid a “brat” and just finding ways to put her down whenever he could. For example, I was over and he made a comment that he had cleaned the kitchen “because we both know Sarah wouldn’t get around to it without him haha.” As a one off, I wouldn’t think much about it, but the small insults are constant and uncalled for.
Also, he’s recently divorced with three kids of his own. He claims his ex was physically abusive toward him but she also has custody 12 out of every 14 days. When I asked why he didn’t have custody if she was abusive, he says it’s because he “just didn’t want to fight.” Sarah also reported that he and his ex are both okay with spanking but that she was clear he can never spank her daughter. To my knowledge he never has. These days, he’s really pushed Sarah to take a lot of the work on the days he has custody. I’ve also noticed and had mutual friends also notice, that her kid definitely takes second fiddle when he’s around and especially so when his kids are there.
After he started to display some big red flag behavior around 3 months in, I pulled Sarah aside and laid out my concerns and she decided to break up with him that night. He immediately blamed her for making him act that way. When she said my husband and I agreed he was wrong, he said, “well I just need to talk to (my husband), you’re obviously telling them lies and he will take my side once he knows the truth.” They got back together within 48 hours. Ever since, he’s clearly worked to distance her from spending time with my family. Recently we invited her and her daughter for dinner and she asked if he could join. I said of course. She said he’s changed and committed to improving so I figured I could give him a chance. The whole dinner things were awkward. My kids (2 and 5) had a rough day at school and were bouncing off the walls (which is uncharacteristic for them but I gave them a pass because of the rough day). Whenever they were acting up he would just glare at them and clench his fists. Sarah seemed totally exhausted and oblivious to his behavior. I just couldn’t shake that something felt really off about how he looked at my kids with rage. There’s just something dark behind his eyes. The next day my husband opened up that he felt really weird about Bobby being around our kids and that he noticed the same rage in his eyes when he looked at our kids. We agreed that we didn’t want him coming around our kids anytime soon.
Recently, Sarah keeps mentioning how much Bobby has been helping her around the house and how her daughter asked if he’s going to be her new dad. He hasn’t done anything since the breakup that’s worthy of an intervention but I also hate to sit by while this creep pulls her in. I adore her daughter and am really struggling with knowing she’s being left with him. What would you do?

I’ve been thinking about how the term "karate" is used, and it feels like it’s lost its meaning. People refer to karate as if it’s a single style, but it clearly isn’t—compare traditional Okinawan karate to Olympic karate, and you’ll see how opposite they are in approach and philosophy.
If karate is going to be an umbrella term, that’s fine. It can refer to striking-focused Japanese martial arts with punching and kicking as the core. But if that’s the case, karate cannot also be a specific style.
Take boxing as an example:
Boxing is an umbrella term for the sport of punching.
While there are textbook techniques, two boxers can have completely different styles (e.g., Mayweather vs. Tyson).
Boxing works because it doesn’t try to claim it’s just one style.
For karate, it feels like people want it both ways. They call it a style while also lumping together countless variations that are fundamentally different. If karate wants to be a style, it needs to reject the umbrella idea and strictly define itself. But if it’s an umbrella term, it needs to stop being talked about as if it’s one thing.
Right now, it feels like "karate" doesn’t mean anything anymore because it’s trying to mean everything.

I (18F) have been doing sport for most of my life but over the past 12 months ive had to take a step back due to pain in my knee. I think it started after a particularly bad landing at tumbling and repeated poor practice on my part, so I went to a physio, they told me to pause all my sport and focus on low impact sports like cycling and gave me some exercises focusing on strengthening the muscle around the joint. the progress was practically non existent after 9 months so he recommended I get some scans done to identify the issue properly - we had thought it was the meniscus. I got the preliminary x ray today and found out I have an osteophyte with a cartilage cap that might be catching bits of the joint (not sure how things work) I'm getting an MRI to check everything else in a few weeks. it's still possible that I do also have a meniscus issue as well but based purely on the osteophyte can I go back to tumbling and volleyball? I should have asked my doctor but the hospital was in chaos after system failure so he was a bit rushed.
