2025.01.22 20:49 DisgustedCOThrowaway As a Correctional Officer, Words Can't Describe my Disgust in the Law Enforcement Field
Throwaway, naturally. I've been working as a correctional officer in the Midwestern United States since mid-2016. In that time, I've grown to genuinely care for a lot of my coworkers, a fair number of whom I routinely hang out with outside of work. When I first started in the field, I was essentially entirely apolitical, having not really paid any attention whatsoever to politics/the news up to that point. Of course, I still had my own set of beliefs (big among them being Universal Healthcare and free education), but I wasn't into politics in the slightest at the time, being only 19 years old. That all changed with Trump's first election, and as the years have gone on, I've grown extremely disheartened with the field as a whole.
I was put off by a lot of what Trump said and did during his first campaign and first term (to put it very, very, VERY mildly), and the skincrawling-inducing comments he would continually make (mocking a disabled reporter, anyone?). During that time, I was still sort of "naive" in a way in that I assumed my coworkers and supervisors were also against that kind of rhetoric, because police are "supposed" to protect and serve, not degrade and dehumanize.
Throughout all of Biden's presidency and this last election cycle, however, my attitude has changed completely. I can't count on both hands and feet how many times I heard the "I love liberal tears" spiels from people at work or how many times I heard about how Trump spitting out his latest racist hot take day after day after day after day([Haitians] are eating the cats and dogs!" "They're sending over their criminals and insane people!") was 100% correct and justified but hearing something extremely mild in comparison about Trump was "treason." For clarity, I watch a fair bit of news from both sides; my wife's parents are all in on Trump, so Fox and Newsmax are always blaring at their house, and Fox is always blasting at work too, while I watch David Pakman, Luke Beasley, and Meidas Touch a few hours a week.
I've come to realize that I'm a blue blip in an absolute ocean of Trump stans at work; over the course of listening to what I feel like is practically everyone across all three shifts talk politics in the background at work, I genuinely believe every single person apart from myself is all in on Trump, despite his repeated attacks on law enforcement (repeatedly calling to defund/get rid of the FBI/DOJ) and unions in general, both of which my coworkers are obviously a part of, along with a few of my coworkers being gay/lesbian, another group consistently in the crosshairs. While that is far, far from the biggest issue I have (that of course being his personality/dangerous rhetoric/disgusting treatment of other people/love of bribes and suck-ups), I'd have thought that maybe attacking something close to these people might finally wake them up, if even for a moment. Seeing on the news that the Fraternal Order of Police endorsed Trump, a 34-time convicted felon and again, the guy constantly raging that we need to essentially get rid of law enforcement because he was pissed about being charged - that alone made me want to never hear a law enforcer complain about "frequent flyers" again.
During the last few months of Trump's latest campaign, there's been a painfully noticeable shift in attitudes from my coworkers, even with the gross excuses for his behavior during all the years beforehand - openly dropping slurs, constantly complaining about our (literally three minute-long) "DEI" online course as being too much to "appease the blacks," cheering on the insurrection and going with the "it was a peaceful protest!" excuse even as officers and members of the public were killed. My coworkers will wear mourning badges when an officer is killed in the line of duty as an act of solidarity but will gleefully cheer when officers are killed during a literal coup attempt, I don't get it.
Everything, and I mean *everything* Trump/Fox News says and does is perfectly A-OK as long as it results in "liberal tears." I've heard all about the criminality from Mexicans and black people over, and over, and over again that these people are hate-spewing from their favorite Fox News hosts and now separately, Tucker Carlson since his firing. I've heard all about these magical migrant caravans that mysteriously never turn up, all about Hunter Biden's laptop that magically never produces anything of material value, all about "muh gas prices" endlessly for years now, as have many of you. The number of times I've heard the "do your own research" garbage from people who don't even know how to type a search into Google or pick up a book is astonishing.
I've grown extremely resentful and distrustful of the profession over the last few years, but the last few months in particular as I've thought about it more and more. Part of me genuinely hopes that police unions are entirely obliterated by Trump because that's what these people voted for and frankly, more than they deserve.
Because I know it'll be brought up, I don't support every Democrat policy either, and I actually disagree with a good bit of what they do too - I think the "language policing" has gotten out of hand (NOT talking about slurs, but stuff like "unalive," "unhoused," etc.), I dislike the slow-walking of codifying stuff like Roe v. Wade, and I dislike how we'll seemingly never get remotely close to the free education and free healthcare that other countries have because of glorification of billionaires in this country, among other things. However, between "words are bad" and "kill/deport anyone with brown skin or blue hair," I think the choice is painfully clear, although apparently I'm incorrect on that front.
TL;DR I'm not entirely sure what I'm looking for here, it's just something that's been on my mind for quite awhile - I grew up badly wanting a career in law enforcement, got one at 19 years old, and have lost all respect for the profession as a whole since. The full-throated support for a deeply racist, extremely hateful, intellectually-impaired man industry-wide has disappointed me beyond belief, to put it very mildly.

Hey everyone! We're staying at a condo with a kitchen for a trip coming up across the country with friends. The friends want to have a shared meal that we make Celiac safe. I have a travel cooking set that has my own cooking utensils and cutting board. Usually we'll make tacos because that's pretty easy to keep safe, but we'll be going to a gf taco place for one of the nights. I'm thinking maybe just some oven baked fish and veg since foil is easy enough on pans to prevent cc. Would love to hear what food ideas you guys have for these scenarios. It's a more remote area, so I can't really plan on there being alternatives at the grocery store.
