About a week ago, Esther, my roommate, asked if I’d like to join her at something called "The Ghost Auction."
"I’m sorry. The what auction??" I asked, frowning.
"Ghost," she replied.
Despite our differences, Esther and I bonded over our love of horror. It started with movies, but soon escalated. Our horror-related experiences got weirder, darker, and creepier each time.
"It's an event where ghosts are placed inside glass tanks and auctioned off to the highest bidder," Esther explained.
Our journey there wasn’t easy. We switched cars several times, all the cars’ windows were painted black, so we couldn’t see where we were headed. By the time we arrived, I was thoroughly disoriented.
The building was like something out of a movie. Everyone was dressed in tuxedos and gowns, like they were attending a high-end gala. It was surreal.
"Miss Esther, invitee number 201?" asked the man guarding the gate, scanning a list of names.
"The one and only," Esther replied confidently.
We walked in after the man pinned a red, strangely-shaped ribbon on her dress.
"Why didn’t he pin one on my dress too?" I whispered.
"Because the invitation is under my name, and I’m allowed to bring a companion" she said. "In fact," she added, "I have to bring a companion. It's mandatory for the first-timer's invitation to be accepted. "
The main hall was breathtakingly grand. The ghosts themselves were displayed along the walls in small cylindrical glass tanks. Inside, each ghost floated like a misty, translucent figure.
Each tank contained only one ghost. I examined them one by one, dead curious about how they were different.
"How are they special?" I asked Esther. "They just look like regular human ghosts to me."
Esther grinned. "Ashley, imagine having one of these in your house—on a desk next to your TV. When guests visit, they won’t see a goldfish in a bowl or a cat in a cage. They’ll see this."
I had to admit, it was a strange and intriguing idea.
We took our seats in the front row, right near the stage where the auctioneer would soon present the ghosts. As I settled in, I realized I needed a quick restroom break.
"Take care of yourself, Ash," she said, her tone oddly serious.
In our three years of friendship, I’d never heard her sound so attentive.
In the restroom, I was inside one of the stalls when two women entered.
"There are a lot of new invitees today," one of them said.
"It’s mandatory for each new invitees to bring a companion for them to be accepted to attend their first event," the other responded.
My chest tightened.
"Our companion's soul would be extracted at the event, turning them into ghosts and placing them inside a small glass tank."
My blood ran cold.
"But we are allowed to bring home a souvenir, though. The companion we brought to the event—we are allowed to take them home as a ghost, inside a small glass tank."

 | Just came back from a month away from my tank (20 Gallon Waterbox cube). During this time the tank was fed by an auto feeder and had no maintenance done other than my roommate refilling the ATO reservoir. I got back today and found that many of my corals doubled in size -anemone split and grew -gsp on back wall reached water surface -new heads on acans -sps exploded in growth -mushroom splits Anyone else had this happen to their tank? I’m guessing the tank enjoyed the extra nutrients of no water change, since I usually do a water change of 25% weekly (I know it’s overkill). Algae obviously grew a bit but nothing crazy. No, really. We should all thrift DVD players and hit up libraries/bookstores/ebay for movies we want. Why the heck are we all paying for Cable 2.0 when there are different ways to consume media. Is it the FOMO for platform-exclusive content?
Why are people willing to pay $50+ bucks for streaming platforms where:
-Most of the content is unwatchable slop -Platforms can remove shows and movies for any reason and/or trade off the license to another platform that you'll have to shovel money to -Password sharing is constantly under attack -YOU'RE STILL GETTING ADS!!
My friends and I have been grabbing the crummiest movies we can find at Half Price Books and having a semi-weekly watch party. It's been a blast. Literally almost anything you want is probably for sale on ebay right now. Don't people miss physically owning their media? Why are we giving money to billionaires who make enough money that they don't have to care about what their customers want?
I'm being sincere, here, other than instant gratification, what is the benefit of paying for streaming services anymore?

2025.01.23 00:07 No_Service_2919 The sponge that was used to scrape melted plastic was later used to do the dishes. Are the kitchen utensils and glasses with toxins in them?
So what happened was our electric kettle was sitting on the stove and my roommate turned on the wrong stove top. So the part below the kettle, you know the plastic part with the cable melted off. (The cable was fine tho it was just the plastic part) She then used our dish washing sponge to clean the stove top because we didn't have anything else (I didn't know this). I later on proceeded to do the dishes with that same sponge and half way through she told me what she used it for. Long story short now we're scared shitless because we think the utensils and glasses might have toxins in them and no matter how many times we wash them it's not going to do anything. Please help us out 🥲 Are we being delusional or is this a valid concern?
