I am currently going through a dark night of the soul. I am typing from the soul.
For awhile, Iāve been battling painful memories from my teenage years. These were the years where I lost myself. I wasnāt really allowed to be true to myself anymore. I was socially conditioned to become a āmanās man.ā I went to an all boys Catholic high school where they ātoughen you up.ā
There was a time in my life where I could freely be myself around my close family. I love them very much. But as I get older, I become more and more distant from them. I can feel society pulling me in one direction but the universe pulling me in another.
The trigger event happened this past weekend where my feelings were invalidated by some of the male figures in my family. The ones who I grew up with. It was very hard. I felt disgusting. Horrible, weak, fragileā¦
Tonight, I thought back to a time in my lifeā¦ very young. Where I was biking around in my grandparents basement with my cousins, being silly, goofy, and just loving life. I was so happy. I felt accepted. I really havenāt felt that way in years.
I just balled my eyes out. Itās a time from the past that I will never get to experience again Those people are just soā¦ different now. Cold. Itās really sad to see.
Perhaps this is the pain I have been carrying for the last few months. I donāt know. But I feel a bit better. Just a bit.

I find it difficult to explain, so please hang in there with me. I am not posting this to seem better or to make fun of anyone or anything like that, and I hope it doesn't come off that way, so if it does I truly am sorry I know this is a sensitive topic for a lot of people.
So, since I was really young (~10 years old), I have struggled with my mental health and have had a lot of ups and downs. By the time I was a teen, I could tell that drinking would be a very bad idea because once I started, I wasn't sure if I'd be able to stop. Still to this day (22 y.o.) I have barely had any alcohol ( literally a few sips while on a trip to Ireland that wouldn't even equal a single shot over the course of 10 days). Although the pull is still there, especially when my mental health starts to drop. I don't really see myself getting much out of the meetings themselves, as I am lucky to be doing alright by myself and through therapy. However, I really think the tokens would help me a lot mentally, having something physical to show my progress with the risk of losing it if I drink.
Basically, if I ever really allowed myself to drink and buy my own drinks, I would most likely become an active alcoholic I'm nearly 100% sure of it. But I have never had an active drinking problem, and don't think I'd get much out of the main part of the program. I'd really just go for the tokens. So I don't know if AA is for me.
