2025.01.23 06:50 CappaNova Tested slow-feeding on my J-Ultra, came out surprised!
I've been seeing mentions of slow-feeding grinders lately, and I recall watching videos about slow-feeding a little while back. I decided to try it out on my 1ZPresso J-Ultra hand grinder to see if I would notice the difference. Obviously, this isn't super-scientific, but I held the grinder at roughly a 60-75 degree angle until near the end of the grind each time to feed the beans more slowly.
The coffees tested:
- Glissade Chute Espresso blend (medium roast)
- Lavazza Espresso (not the Barista version, just Espresso, says medium but it's really dark roast)
- Noeo Colombian EA Decaf (medium roast)
Firstly, the grind definitely needs to go down quite a bit. I went down several clicks to get normal shot times. For reference, tests on these three different coffees required finer grind by: 7, 15, and 15 clicks. (I suspect the smaller number of clicks on Lavazza was from being older, darkly-roasted coffee.) Shots were dosed with 20g for the caffeinated beans and 22g for the decaf and brewed to between 42-45g out. I had Lavazza and Glissade shot times around 35-40 seconds, and the Noeo ended around 25 seconds.
Next up, shots seemed to have more crema than before. Even the older Lavazza seemed to have more crema. Mouthfeel overall was a little thicker.
And lastly, flavor. Each of the three tested coffees showed more complexity and fruit flavors in the cup. Even the Lavazza had something I couldn't quite place start to show up. Maybe some dark grapes or raisins? Previously, it was just a dark, roasty, smoky espresso. Kinda bitter like dark cocoa. Nothing special at all, and just an average shot of mass-produced coffee. But that gave it some life that was quite pleasant.
But the most-surprising was my Colombian EA Decaf. It went from being nutty with lots of graham cracker and a touch of raspberry to having some kind of full-on fruit that I couldn't quite place, particularly in the aroma. But I'll call it tropical punch or something akin to Swedish fish fruitiness..? Call it red or dark fruit. I dunno, but it caught me way off-guard in a good way. I'll likely go finer on the Noeo next time to see what happens.
If you haven't tried slow-feeding your beans, give it a try. Your coffee might just surprise you!

I’m a recent grad in geology and looking for a career in geology. So far my search and applications have been fruitless. I’ve been thinking about opening more opportunities by getting a certificate in GIS, for reasons that are very long and strange for my university, I wasn’t able to take the dedicated course in school and the 1-2 classes that had us use it were very short introductions to the program.
I’m wondering what cost effective online courses I can take that include both the program and the course(s) itself. I pondered the actual GIS website and found the minimal subscription for the program to be $700/yr.
I’m assuming this is the best option? If anyone has any suggestions I would love to hear them.

I noticed as I inspected the parts during the suspension assembly that for as good as they did with the details on this kit that they left out the drain plugs for the final drives..What’s the deal with obtaining after market kit parts for the Magic Factory BFIST? Specifically drain plugs for the final drives, does anyone know of something or someone that has modified their model this way or I am just the only one who seems to care? I freelance full-time for an agency that works with brands in the fashion, beauty, wellness, skincare, and fragrance industries. I still have a lot to learn and am currently taking Joanna Wiebe's copy school program, which is immensely helpful, but I feel like luxury copywriting (for fragrance specifically) is a whole different ball game.
One marketing advisor I work with tells me I should avoid being evocative or using superlatives, but they have drafted example copy that uses phrases like "grand decadence," "indescribably opulent," "the most golden perfume"...which I think is bad, and which contradicts their direction. Plus, I feel like for luxury marketing to be convincing or effective, you shouldn't be telling your customer that you're luxurious so explicitly like that.
So, yeah. Do you have general advice on writing for luxury brands? Insight into how it differs from writing for more mass-market brands? Anything helps!
