Long story short, I got surprised this year with my first camera (EOS T7) from my wife and kids for Christmas. It's been a want for many years now that I never could justify the expense myself. They got me the T7 Rebel kit with the EF 75-300mm f/4-5.6 III & EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 II.
Since Christmas, I've been reading intro to photography stuff online on sites like www.findingtheuniverse.com. I've also been toying with the idea of taking a class, either online or at a local ju-co this summer, to learn the fundamentals. (I need to be hands-on to really learn.)
Right now, I am looking for a lens for my daughter's volleyball games. I had it at her tournament last weekend and kept the camera in sports mode (I was thinking of playing with the shutter priority settings but chickened out) with the 18-55mm lens for most of the weekend.
I took about 1200 shots over the 6 games, and overall, I am pretty happy for it being my first time out, and at least they were not bad enough for the other parents on the team to complain (to my face at least, lol).
I do feel like I needed more aperture to be able to increase my shutter speed, as I was missing the action I was trying to capture in a lot of shots. I seemed to capture the before and after, but the gap between shots was my goal. So, I guess my first question is, how much of this is user error needing to learn the timing of the camera better vs. shutter speed?
Looking at options for a new lens, I don't feel like I'll need much zoom since most of the time I am sitting not even 10 feet off the court with how many courts they cram into these convention centers. My very surface-level searching led me to be looking at the EF-S 24mm f/2.8 STM & EF 50mm f/1.8 STM for my application, but I have no idea if I am missing anything.

The world of 2019 feels so different than what came after. There has been an energy and zeitgeist shift. I think the reason is when COVID happened a huge collective consciousness took hold. Collective consciousness can happen, usually in times of war or in modern times, during sporting events but the scale of COVID, the universality and social media created a unity of experience. As time went on this naturally drifted and we now are out the other side living splintered disconnected lives exasperated by the very pandemic that created the collective consciousness.

This may be an only me problem but I'm stuck on my outline. For my book, I have a really detailed but also flawed outline. For each chapter I wrote down exactly what I want to happen but now that I'm trying to write my first draft and I feel like like my outline is bad. It's all over the place tonally, the story doesn't flow well, I don't think I have enough for the characters to properly be fleshed out, etc. I've actually been thinking about starting over with my outline before even writing. This sounds a lot the same issues I've heard people have with their first drafts. They keep trying to make the first draft "perfect" and the story never actually get's written because of that. I've heard advice to just get your first draft out there on the page and even if it's bad that's ok because it can be fixed but the that advice imply when I already know exactly what's going to happen? Should I figure out exactly what's going to happen before writing or should I just start writing my first draft from my original outline and fix the plot issues after? Alternatively, should I just forget the outline and be a "pantser"? Has anyone else had this problem, if so how did it resolve?

I was listening to a podcast with Brady and Belichick and they were talking about how the Ravens lost the game, the Bills didn’t win it. That pissed me off and made me think of the Patriot Way. The Patriot Way was cheating in these games to GET in the Super Bowl and take the criticism after a shot at the Lombardi later. In subzero conditions the ball is hard and slippery. It’s easy to fumble, it’s hard to catch, more difficult to throw, except when the ball is under inflated. The Ravens didn’t cheat to win the game, they just weren’t prepared for the difficult conditions the cold adds AND the Bills were. Buffalo played two cold games before the Ravens and played more conservative on offense and played more aggressive on defense knowing turnovers were a factor in freezing cold temperatures. In the end, Buffalo won because they were prepared and took care of the ball. Fuck the Patriots. Fuck Bill Belichick. Fuck Tom Brady. Go Bills!!!

Who else is simply done with gaming. With the community, with games themselves.
At this point, we can watch games be released in utterly broken states, and still be fawned over as masterpieces by gamers. We can watch the most bigoted depictions of women, PoC, queer people be applauded by people who'll later rage at such characters being treated like actual people.
I think right now, fresh off of Baldur's Gate 3 and Metaphor: ReFantazio, it's pretty obvious that gamers and critics relish bigotry and hypocrisy. They want games that respect the players' choice to massacre children, as long as those children are of non-white races. They want games that point at other cultures and degrade them as savage and backwards. They want games where queer men are written as predators using their sexuality to victimize others. They want games where light-skinned men are deemed innate leaders by their race. They want games where it's no problem to leave a character's storyline unfinished if they're not white.
And playing a game that genuinely cares about its world and narrative and actual people, only for gamers to only care that you can't be an asshole to a non-binary companion, pretty much deals the deal.
I'm unjerking for good at this point, because like the rest of the world, gaming is an unwelcome place for people like myself.

I’m a mom to two neurodiverse kids who need a LOT of help from me to manage every aspect of their lives. I also act as caregiver for a family member with very high support needs 2 days a week, and work part time in healthcare. I used to be able to function better when I was working 80 hours a week because my attention was on ONE thing all the time, having so many plates in the air is WAY more overwhelming to me than just working that much ever was. But I also can’t just drop any of these responsibilities. Has anyone found ways to help themselves when you’re CONSTANTLY having to split your attention?
